I have hit a brick wall. Must have spent the last 2 hours in the Catacombs and I just keep getting killed.

Sometimes fogwalls are glitched and don't let phantoms pass. Happened a few times to me and it's annoying as fuck. Sometimes red invaders also aren't sent back when that happens, so we just kinda duel until the 150% HP boss kills the host :S

'Sometimes' seems more like 'consistently' for me. And it's absolutely frustrating, because I can't do the P
rinces
solo (or with the NPC summon), the first phase always kills me.

How on Earth am I supposed to beat
Old Demon King
? It's hard as a melee character as I'm constantly having an issue where I get stuck in his crotch area when he goes for his firebreath attack. I'm using my weapon two-handed since a shield would do fuck-all during this fight, but it's still pretty difficult.

Is there a point of no return in this game? I think I'm very close to the end. I hope it's like Dark Souls II where you can still clean stuff up before being shunted into NG+.

1. Don't use target cam
2. Stay behind him
3. Attack when it's safe and don't be greedy.

If his flame circle thingys kill you too often you might want to think about using Dragon Crest Shield to block them. ~90% fire damage reduction allow you to turtle his flame attacks.

Reposting something I said earlier:
Run up to him, he'll do a big horizontal swing, roll into him and hit once or twice and roll away. He'll either throw up some fire on ground or stomp it with his weapon. Roll away and come back in for hit or two, repeat until he goes enraged(it's like 3/4 health)....at this point it's basically just keep far away for him(circle the piles of demon bodies) and move in to attack once or twice between his attacks.

You can just keep your distance from him for ages and watch his attack pattern until you feel comfortable reading his abilities. He has no gap closer.

Also equip fire res ring and fire res gear etc. Shouldn't really get hit by his melee so defence stats not important

Edit: I beat him with uchigatana, no shield fyi. (doing shield-less run)

Both that and Irithyll Dungeon afterwards are very much cases of
099-run2.gif

I didn't find the Catacombs to be too difficult. I was probably a bit over-leveled though.

Thanks! Will give it a try.

Don't you just love it when you step in his lingering fire attack and lose about 50% of your health? You'll have to time your dodges so you get behind and to the side when he swings his club. Get a few hits and back off because he'll do his projectile attack or his "aoe".

What the hell is that bizarre attack that loads of people are using in PVP, where you writhe around on the floor like an idiot stunlocking anyone in a 360 degree radius? It's annoying.

Probably the
Farron Greatsword, it has an attack where you swing the sword in a 360 using the accompanying dagger as a sort of anchor while you spin around with centrifugal force.

Apparently after credits it asks you if you want to stay in the world or move onto NG+

Edit:
Lies because the enemy placement in the
Irithyll Dungeon
is made for people who try to run through it.

Agreed, slow and steady wins the race!

Ha ha, yeah. The damage on that is insane.

Really loving the game. It just gets better and better the further you go. Just got to
Lothric Castle, gotta love that eclipse
! Do I have a much content left? Seems like I'm close to the end.

I love all the secrets in the game too. I know I missed some major NPC quests. I can't wait to find out how many things I missed when I get to the point where I can progress to NG+.

I was helping a guy in
Anor Londo
last night when we got invaded by 2 dark spirits and they began to fight each other. So I started waving my torch at them and and everyone joined in:

After about a minute or two of waving our torches we noticed that a blue sentinel had walked up and joined in:

Dark Spirits and
Aldritch Faithful
kept invading and fighting each other, we did this for like 5-10 minutes.

Potential area spoilers if you aren't too far in the game.

That's the final area. I missed loads of stuff in my first playthrough too, enjoying my second playthrough more tbh as a lot of the NPC quests just bypassed me.

You know, I really don't know why FROM didn't decide to change the camera distance for bosses. I just now noticed, since I started a second character that
immediately after Vordt when you're about to put the banner down
the camera distance changes as you cross a line. Why just here?

Shield is indeed pointless.
Dodge into the sweeping hit (it goes right to left, dodge left to right). A stomp with AoE will follow, dodge towards him and get a few hits.
Dodge the smashing hit, he'll try that short range "blow" fire attack right after if you're close. Dodge and get a few hits in, just mind that it's slightly delayed.
If he breathes fire (that he probably won't if you stay close), dodge the ground flames right to left. You won't outrun it. If you're close enough, you can run to him and avoid it altogether while getting a few hits in.
If he stops and raises the club, he's summoning meteors. Get a couple hits then GTFO.
If he stops and stomps the ground (not aiming at you), he's summoning that ring of fire. GTFO as well.
And as a separate spoiler, still for this fight:
if he's at low health and looks stunned, GTFO or you'll be one-shotted by an AoE
.

Yeah that sounds right. It's super irritating to play against, everyone writhing around on the floor like Eddy Gordo.

Finished my first run through, mostly blind except just to see areas i've missed.

Still enjoyed the game a lot, but yeah, there's a bunch of minor things in it tthat keep me from elevating it over Souls 1 and Bloodborne. Certainly better than 2. Amazingly packed with content still and difficulty wise probably the hardest game of them all for me really (sometimes in good, sometimes bad).

Level design is for the most part very solid with shortcut porn all over the place. Graphics and performance on PC are really good. Although certain zones like the
Catacombs and ancient ruins
reek of "Chalice Dungeon leftovers". Some others like
Archdragon peak
were freaking gorgeous.

My main gripe would be, and it's not even the fault of the game, that it's hard to come off the previous games and still bring something completely new. A lot of the time felt almost too familiar either to BB or Souls 1, both in terms of reused assets and level design. It's still fun and I'm guessing if you haven't played BB or one of the previous souls games you'll enjoy these a lot. But places like
Grand Archives, which really was like a mix of Duke's Archives mixed with the lab in the BB dlc. Or the undead settlement which felt a lot like hemwick's channel lane. Irythil was a mix of Cainhurst and then you straight up have anor londo
. It does feel all too familiar sometimes.

But my biggest thing was some of the enemy design. Some bosses and monsters were amazing, especially near the end where it felt they were made for Souls game. Others...felt straight ripped from bloodborne, including their design mechanics more tailored for bloodborne. So you have ennemies who can chain attack, have huge lunges plus damaging auras. Same for bosses with even extra bullshit and it feels annoying that i -had- to summon just to have a chance for certain ones. I like soloing my bosses the first time around and some just felt way too cheap.
The outrider monsters are probably some of the worst. INSANE reach, long chain of attacks and a frostbite aura. Either dodging or blocking is too risky as they'll just eat through your stamina. And Pontiff is the one i HAD to coop for

Overall though, still damn solid. Some bosses were still memorable, and areas just kept on giving.

what are some of the better shields?...in terms of protecting against physical but also a nice overall one that's not too heavy...sort of like the Silver Knight shield from Dark Souls 1

Ah thats what it was! To the invaders demise, great chaos fireball is a thing :p

Just got past the
Road of Sacrifice
s. A bit of a let down after how nice looking and artistic the
Undead Settlement
was. The verticality and complexity of that area was awesome aesthetically as well as from a design standpoint. It looked so much like a painting from some angles. Hopefully some of the areas still to come can match the level design of that area.

Will
Archdragon Peak
(late game optional area) remain in all of its beauty after I ring the bell and fight the boss?

All the "Crest" shields are good, Shield of Want is 100% physical and increases the amount of souls you get per kill, and the Black Knight Shield is great for its effect, too.

Just beat
Dancer.
That second form was tough.

And again where do I find a heavy gem?

You can get one from two crystal lizards. There's one in the
Undead Settlement
, and another above the
Old Wolf of Farron
bonfire area. You probably missed them, but they'll still be there.

This is my first time playing a souls game at launch... I am loving beating a boss and then sunbroing at the gate to help people and get embers

I have a question about armor in this. I've been getting a lot but I notice that almost all of it is much worse then the starting Knight gear is there something I'm missing. I'm a good length into the game
Farron Keep Perimeter
and like anything I've found the stats drop significantly.

The
Demon Ruins
are insane. From really upped the difficult level to 100 in this area. Backstabs are only doing like a quarter health to the enemies here and Im lvl 53.

Also
where is the doll that's needed to enter the Boreal area?
The game gives you no hints where this thing might be.
