Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Same thing happening to me occasionally, I'll spin the camera around and think its an FPS drop but fraps is telling me 30.

I'm afraid this is just what 30fps looks like. You notice it when the camera moves or pans because this is when low FPS is most evident.

Heh, that guy seems to think that it just involves taking a d3d9.dll and .ini from somewhere and slapping them into the game folder, and it will magically work.
The jig is up, Durante. We're onto ya, come clean already, you filthy pirate and un-modder!

i7 3610QM
GTX 675m
8 GB RAM

It's a laptop, but it's a nice one. Stuff like DXHR and Sleeping Dogs runs at 60 FPS.

Yeah, I'm starting to think Nvidia might have some mobile driver issues for this game. They haven't released an official mobile driver in months and most mobile users, even ones with decent rigs like you, seem to be having issue here.

I'm happy to assume that my problems are CPU dependent though unlike you (my i7-720QM is garbage by modern standards at 1.6GHz even if my 285m still maxes out most non-CPU intensive games fine at 1920x1080 at 30FPS).

GreenManGaming 20% off - DERHE-RRDER-RINGE

Thank me later ;) (right after you finish polishing Durante's Boots) :D

Crap, this works! I JUST bought this 30 minutes ago on steam for full price! I did a whole bunch of searching for GMG codes on Google beforehand too.

What version messed up the frame rate, .3 or .2? I have .1 right now and am pretty happy with everything even though I can't read messages.

I never tried out .2 but went from .1 to .3 and my FPS tanked.

I know I'm CPU limited as even without the fix I get bad drops when there's a lot of physics going on but when it was just enemies and the environment, it was a steady 30FPS. With .3 I'm at a locked 15FPS with no drops.

Green Man Gaming is always impossible for me to purchase from. The only way I can do it is by calling my credit card company and having them approve the transaction as it comes in. My bank insists they are a gambling site and have them blacklisted. So for that reason I had to pay full price. oh well. $8 extra isn't so bad.

Ah man that sucks. The code should probably be on the OT for the remainder of the week until it expires...

For those with AMD cards, what are your specific settings for CCC? I'm going to create a new profile for dark souls -- and i'm assuming I need to apply to darksouls.exe or is it data.exe??

How i currently See the world.....

Probably not doing what im seeing justice but im not running anything other than free fraps right now so Bmp's (Lol Image enthusiasts Shudder) as i just reformatted/reinstalled, but if u go to the link it is almost 100%, but really seeing the quality of even compressed images kinda shows you how good this fix is,

Once again Thank you Durante

Well im off to play can't stand not being in game ANY longer ahahah time to order some gungho i think... Anyone know were i can get some posted to AUS?

Durante first of all thank you for all of this

Second of all, From Software should pay you for fixing their game and making more people buy it!

I've heard that, so I guess at least I avoided any potential hassle.

Still excited to play!

Seems to be a case by case thing. I have had problems with other sites like GetGamesGo, but GMG has been 100% reliable every time I've used it (DX:HR, DS and some other thing).

I just found some footage of the resolution fix in action at 1080p. Looks great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nID7Mpe4uY

How is it holding up so far? Has the fix broken for anyone yet? I'm seriously close to double dipping right now.

I've only played about 3 hours but I have absolutely no bugs or problems of any sort. And my frame rate never dips below 30 even though I'm forcing 16xAA and doing a complete super sampling.

Some guys earlier are all the way to Blight Town and say the game still runs a solid 30fps there. It seems to be the real deal.

I am completely baffled by From's decision to lock it at 720p. The assets look fantastic and it runs stable at high res even on a moderate PC.

I just wanted to test version 3 a little bit, along with Catalyst tweaks to get a constant framerate.

2:30 hours later, I forgot to have lunch.

Thank you Durante.

I was having some random frame drops. After I created a profile for DATA.exe and applied these settings:

Now I only get slowdowns when on the Bonfire and all those fucking particle effects shot up in the air (which is expected).

For those wondering, I actually dislike AA, so that's why I only set 2x. I also always turn off VSync (maybe it's because my monitor runs at 59hz? I don't see the need). I have a 7850 and that was only using 44% of the GPU power, running at 2560x1600 with filteringOverride 2 on the .ini, so this can clearly be tweaked.

I'm also wondering if filteringOverride 2 overrides Catalyst options or the other way around. I was gonna test this more thoroughly this afternoon, but I ended up playing the game for 2:30 hours and forgetting to eat lunch instead.

From Software - "To be completely honest, we're having a tough time doing it due to our lack of experience and knowledge in terms of porting to PC. First we thought it would be a breeze, but it's turned out not to be the case. We're still developing right now - we're crunching right now"

Durante- "this won't do" 3 Hours later....Posts Fix

Can't you just Force it in CCC? thats what i did and im sure it made a difference.

Yeah but I like using Radeon Pro so I can have a frame rate counter.

So far with it set to "2," full super sampling and 16x AA I still get a solid 30 frames per second. Every now and then it bobbles to 29 but I wouldn't notice it if I weren't staring at the counter.

Fraps will give u Fps OSD....... thats is all

This game is actually pretty nice looking at high resolutions. I wonder if FROM have honestly ever actually seen it like this, and if it will have any impact on their plans for future PC support.

I'm sure the texture artists would appreciate it. They obviously took the time.

I was just thinking that to myself...

From software team trying out the patch and thinking: Holy shit... this game actually looks fucking awesome!

That said, someone should send the patch to them and get some comments.

When I order (I'm caving damnit!) from GMG it says: Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (NA) - is there any region locking shenanigans or can I activate it on Steam in EU without problems?

Was wondering if someone could give me advice on which res to use...

I have a Nvidia GTX 460, and I plan on playing the game on my HDTV. However, the TV has a maximum screen resolution of 720P or 1080i. Just wondering what setting someone would recommend for me. I am using 1280 X 720 in the DSfix and it looks good.

No worries dude im pretty sure you'll be fine

To clear up any confusion surrounding GMG's Dark Souls release:

- You will see the Dark Souls product page for your country's store currency.
- Dark Souls will use Steamworks (activate on Steam) and GFWL on top of that.
- Dark Souls is region locked by Steam in Japan. (This was previously TBC - all Japanese pre-purchases will be refunded)
- GFWL is officially supported in the following countries: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/Countries. [xbox.com] Users in other countries can access Live by creating a Gamertag using an address from a supported country, although no technical support is available.

I live in Europe and i just bought it from GMG with the code, activated it and downloading now from steam.

But without them this mod would be irrelevant.
Yes, if they had done their job properly (or someone would have ordered them to do it) then we'd never need any "fix".

Also, my non-gaffer friend wants to give Durante a hug, in a manly, latino way. I'll donate for him and me asap though :)

So is the depth of field fix in the works? Or are some people not getting the pixelated far off backgrounds?

Everything thats too far away from the camera (like backgrounds and skyboxes) or that's too close to the camera (when you're right up a wall and turn the camera round) is getting pixelated to hell, because the LOD is being based on the original rendering resolution.

Durante said he would look into it.

Well they obviously did a better job than some of us thought otherwise it wouldnt simoly be the matter of unlocking higher resolutions. The high res textures are there and the game can be pushed to high performance on a moderate PC and maintain the framerate where the console versions can't.

To me it is more baffling that they locked the frame rate to 720p than it is a result of incompetance. The port they developed can clearly handle a lot more and it benefits heavily from it.

I highly doubt that the high-resolution assets were created solely for the PC version. It's more likely that the visuals stayed exactly as they are from the console versions but nobody really noticed their quality because of the low internal rendering resolution and output of consoles. Hell, nobody could tell that there were surprisingly high-quality assets in the PC version at all until the mod came around.
