Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

so I've been making manual checkpoints pre and post boss fights by quitting before entering boss fights and backing up the save file.

Boo-urns.

That probably takes longer than just sprinting from the bonfire to the boss anyway.

Once you unlock the shortcut for a given level I don't think there's any boss you can't run to in about a minute.

But losing first is what makes winning fun!

oh but I do welcome the losses, and I obviously have to do at least 1 runback to boss but don't really see the point in repeating the runbacks, it's not a new challenge to me.

no, it takes me less than 10 secs. quit to main title, alt-tab, ctrl+v, alt-tab, load save.

Since I installed the patch, the names of the bosses don't appear. Is this happening to anyone else?

Thanks by the way Durante. This just a minor issue I'm having. Game looks and plays so much better now.

Well I've still got mine locked down to 30 because I don't want to risk unlocking it.

no one has ever been banned according to all knowledge btw. Just unlock the framerate but set the cap to 30. This prevents the game from going down to 15fps when it really should not

Oh I think I might be experiencing this (although I didn't realise at first), I took on the gargoyles and capra demon but don't recall seeing their names come up in their intro bit.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to the OP for this fix. It makes the game much more enjoyable. I have a friend simultaneously playing through it the 360 and it's great to hear his stories haha. I'm gonna borrow it from him afterwards so I can (almost) double-dip.

I just picked up the PC version in the Steam sale and started playing today. I used the DSfix and put the resolution as 1680 x 1050 since that's what I usually use. But when I play the game its letterboxed on the top and bottom, is there a way to fix that?

Oh shit! Now that's a gamechanger why did I instantly think of "60 fps" with regards to the fps unlock. Having it drop from 30 to 29 instead of 30 to 15 is a god send, why did I miss this...

The game is designed for 16:9 and can't be played at any other aspect ratio without further modification.

Does this still cause problems like the reduced roll/jump distance and falling through the floor after sliding down a ladder?

I guess I should have posted in this thread first, but I was alarmed after not playing DS for a while to come back and have all my characters with green faces, and falling through the floor no matter what new game or otherwise I chose. I was thinking I got hacked on the stream end but now I can't remember where my DSfix files were adn since I can't find them I am worried the problem may be from there.

Question. WHERE are the files supposed to be on my computer if I downloaded from steam? There seems to be too many paths and I recall clicking like 8 times to get to the folder where the dll file goes, but since it has been son long I have forgotten! I also suffer form concussions so please go easy on person with challenges?!?!??

Is there a way to set Steam to not auto-update the game? I like everything the way I have it currently set and don't want the dsfix to break with a new update

You can by right clicking it in the library -> Updates tab but if you launch the game outside of offline mode, it will update to the latest version. Steam is still buggy with setting games to not update so it might update anyway.

This is the only time they've updated the game, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you really want to, you can right click on Dark Souls in your library, go to "properties," then the updates tab, then choose "do not automatically update this game" from the drop-down.

Sigh.

I could post this somewhere else like the PC builds main thread but I think people would most likely skip my post over there.

Anyway, I have a laptop with an i7 3610QM (3.1 GHz), 8GB RAM, GT 650M (OC'd to almost GTX 660M levels). Everything was running flawlessly for about a month, until the motherfucking preinstalled McAfee started causing BSOD so I ended up uninstalling it painfully.

For some reason the performance in practically every single game I had installed plummeted, and they clearly became CPU limited. I could play NFS MW at 45-55 FPS before, but since then I've only been able to get 20-25 FPS, with unnverving stuttering every 2 seconds without fail, and the CPU usage never goes over 12-15% (12.5% is the equivalent of using 1 thread of the 8, only that the 12.5% is spread through ALL the threads). I had already completed the game so it wasn't that big of a deal, and it got a little better when I reinstalled some games/installed new ones.

Same shit happened with Dark Souls. I went from perfect 30FPS locked at 2.6GHz or ~50FPS unlocked at 1080p at 3.1GHz, to barely keeping 30FPS at 3.1GHz. If it may help, it does run better when unlocked, it sticks closer to 30FPS. If I keep the 30 FPS lock it's like the CPU "relaxes" and I often get slowdowns so big that my GPU underclocks and doesn't even sweat :|

Other games I've bought and installed after that have ran better than NFS but still BADLY in some cases, like Planetside 2 which is totally CPU limited and barely reaches 30FPS in empty places, or Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends which doesn't even reach 30FPS at 3.1 GHz, and does the same weird "spread 12.5% CPU usage over 8 threads" shit. Serious Sam 3 which I bought yesterday on Steam's Sale is also CPU limited in a very weird way, although it's playable.

Other games like AC3 or Hitman Absolution ran better than that I guess, performance seemed like what it should be and it was above 30 or 45 FPS so it didn't matter anyway.

But this shit is seriously annoying, specially with DS which I so wanted to replay with the DLC after playing on 360. AND specially seeing people playing with 50-60FPS after the patch using stock Q6600, which my i7 should match.

It's so frustrating to see my GPU usage at 50-60%... so, does any gaffer have any idea of what could I do? I've tried enabling and disabling Intel Speedstep on the BIOS, I've tried every single Throttlestop option to no avail.

PD: Synthetic benchmarks run fine, 3D rendering runs fine, 100% of every thread, so it's not hardware related. Temps are fine and never cross 78º. GPU doesn't cross 70º.

Sorry for the wall of text and the off topic, but PLEASE help a DS bro :(

PD2: Just tried monitoring my CPU while running New Vegas.. runs at 30FPS outside, 45-50 inside, with very low GPU usage (40-50%, and I'm using ENB) and even lower CPU usage. One thread maybe reaches 60%, the others hover around 30 or 20, overall usage is ~30%. Gah :(

They should be here

~\Steam\steamapps\common\Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\DATA

I think these are the files too.

Save data is somewhere else though

~\My Documents\NBGI\DarkSouls\<GFWL Name>

Thanks this has been very helpful . I indeed found the files (although it seems I may be missing a few based on your screen shot (and my memory), but i need a another download to finish as I re-installed a 2nd time now. ....so now I have no clue what kind of bug I have. I will try to put the latest DSfix in even though I was doing fine with 1.4. Perhaps my saves were corrupted and Game save manager is the problem? At this point I would rather start a new game and lose the characters than have no game at all?!?!?!?!

This sucks..I tried to delete the game save manager in case that was the problem but it does not seem to help. When I tried using the new DSFix it crashed (likely unrelated) but seriously green characters and no ability to start new ones is pretty depressing. Guess I will have to wait for steam support to reply in a week or so.

Can anyone direct me to a mod that will change the on screen button UI's to their correct keyboard button instead of xbox buttons.

Also, what should I set presentWidth presentHeight to for different levels of downscaling?

Do multiples of your screens resolution.

So assuming you have a 1080p monitor, a good resolution would be 3840 width with 2160 height, but that will probably be incredibly taxing.

The standard for downsampling is usually 1440p which is exactly 4x 720p, with would be

w: 2560
h: 1440

The game is designed for 16:9 and can't be played at any other aspect ratio without further modification.
If you don't mind stretching/scaling you can probably set a 16:9 resolution and tell your video card to not retain aspect ratio, but that or figuring out how to crop the sides off is your only hope.

So couple questions on Sweet FX:

-Will it degrade performance on my laptop (not worried about main rig), where I get a solid 30fps with FPS unlocked (even with FRAPS)

-Does it really enhance the visuals all that much? None of the screens have convinced me.

-Any bugs or glitches to watch out for?

Guys, just installed Windows on my new 27" iMac (2560x1440). I've no idea where to start given the specs:

3.4GHz i7
8GB
680MX 2GB

Any ideas on what res I should push for?

I have my monitor resolution set to 1920x1080, what should I set renderWidth/renderHeight to? And should I change presentWidth/presentHeight ?

I am running 2 x GTX680 [SLI] and i7-3770k @ 350 [stock]

Finally went back to Nvidia (GTX 670 OC'd version), playing DS in 4k (downsampled) is glorious! The way it's meant to be played, indeed!

With your system I'd go for 2560x1440 as renderwidth/height, and 1920x1080 as presentWidth/height. And enable FXAA level 4, VSSAO at scale 1, DoF at 1080p with HQ blur 1. And unlock the framerate.

Should run at 60 FPS outside of rare alpha blending situations. You could probably go for an even higher rendering resolution, but it starts to get into diminishing returns on a 1080p screen.

I guess because it was late I was reading the ini wrong and thought that changing presentw/h to 1 would double by 1. Like a more automatic downscaling method.

But can we downscale by .5 with dsfix? Most downscalers I've seen have that option for people who cant do a full resolution downscale.

Leave renderwidth and height where it is and double those numbers for present width and height.

That's the wrong way around.

presentWidth/Height are what the image is scaled to. That should usually always be the resolution of your display device.
renderWidth/Height are what the game renders at. This should be as high as possible without negatively affecting your framerate.

Durante, I tried to message you about this, but setting presentWidth/Height to anything but 0 makes the HUD mod not work for me. Is this happening for anyone else? I haven't gotten any responses to my post about it.

I'll have to check that, I have no idea what could be causing it.

I see. The "if in doubt leave at 0" notation confused me. But now that it isnt 3 in the morning i realized the set above this is for internal resolution.

Can we downscale by .5? My monitors rez is only 1440x900, but I've only got a 560ti card so I dont think I could handle a full double resolution downscale.

Thank you! I will set this up now and give it a try!

I noticed that sometimes my UI would flicker between normal size and the smaller/scaled size. I am using Serious Demons Souls-esque HUG and UI for DSFix too.

Edit: OK those settings make my text go blurry and the HUD chnages are no lnoger active (it's back to the larger sizes)

This has been one wild last few days (green faces on my characters and no DS whatsoever)...I guess the problem was with the old way we were getting 60 FPS on DSFIX1.4. I removed the files associated with the possibly ban worthy stuff and now my old DSfix works...but no 60 FPS! :(

ok I am startling to see a picture here, although I am not a knowledgeable PC er it is still disconcerting to know someone was into my files somehow.....ok I can leave it!

My current issue is getting the beauty which was 60 FPS back somehow! I have not been able to get 2.01 to even load the initial screen. So far I have tried:

setting the Depth of Field resolution override to 0 as this is what it was on my 1.4, I also tried 540, and 1080.

I also tried various resolutions.

I have a 2560x1440 monitor. What shoudl the two resolution values be set at? both 1080 and 1440 worked for me on 1.4.

I guess my specific question is: What is there in the new 2.01 that was not there for 1.4? I have tried locking and unlocking framerate...but perhaps not in proper combination with the other values?

Everything works! There was a magic fix forthe latest 2.01 probs. Musta been doing something wrong that I did not realize....maybe it was that single readme file from the previous fix I left hanging around?

started a new character and ran around the garden to get primed for washing pole...again...must be the fourth or fifth time for this weapon build alone!!!

Just wanted to stop back in right quick and thank Durante for this wonderful fix. Everything is working flawlessly on my system including the mousefix. Game is more demanding then I expected and I'm only able to downscale by 1/2 increase of my normal resolution. Was only getting about 35 frames in the cell at the beginning of the game at a 100% increase in internal resolution.

Hells horses! I'm only up to the first ladder in the game and can already tell that this game has some serious atmosphere.

How does the game play with the mouse fix?

Durante - thank you for this fix! I bought the game today during the Steam sale and finished applying the fix and changing settings in the .ini file. I am downsampling using 2560X1440 (in the render h/w) and then I put 1920X1080 in the present h/w. Ever since the first time I launched the game, the HUD has been at what I'm assuming is its default size. I enabled the hud mod and set it to 0.50 scale, and enabled minimal hud. I have tried exiting and restarting the game and my computer but it is always its normal size. Is there something I'm doing wrong or anything I can do to get it to apply the HUD changes? I suppose if I just don't downsample then everything will be proportional - maybe I should do that? Thanks.. (newb with stuff like this...)

Thanks for this, those settings work a treat on my system (amd 7950, i5 2500k@4300) although I can't handle 60fps it just seems so wrong to me after playing this game at 30fps from the beginning.
