Hey guys I heard that the balder "swag" sword is pretty good so I picked one up and love its move set. I upgraded it to chaos +5 and Im not really liking the damage output too much. Would a +15 regular been better?

I also had a few pvp matches earlier in the catacombs and beat this guy with a backstab of the swag sword. I love it, but I keep another weapon on me just in case. The guy I beat sent me one hell of a rage message lol.

Any suggestions for the balder side sword?

Can someone give me a hint where the "Painted World"is? Thanks.

its where everyone else said it was but you must have a certain item or the world will be inaccessible.

I'm really hoping we'll finally get some of the missing links required to fully understand the lore.
Don't count on it, IIRC the guru producer/director Miygzaki (?sp) is hard set on that formula....my view is that he is a bit older, traditional, andhis storytelling has been conditioned over the years by old school classic Japanese porn....teases you enough to get enticed......but too confusing and no happy ending. Climax demands individual imagination.

From that battle, I also learned that I need to get some sort of magic defense and/or resistance.
I always begin each playthrough by
going back to the asylum
for the crest shield and the rusty ring; although the wooden shield is also a very good magic/lightning blocker, the crest shield is just indespensibe throughout the game.
soultron said:
After that, I returned to the UP and managed to beat the 2
Bell Gargoyles
on my first try! The summoned
sun knight guy
took their aggro and kited them away, which was awesome.

I feel like I had quite the adventure today. Really getting the hang of the game now. It's not terribly difficult. It just requires lots of patience. Thanks to everyone who recommended going for an agile character rather than one with super heavy armour. Being mobile is so much more important, you're right. c:
Awesome job. exploring the garden and the links back to the tower and parish is what the virgin playthrough is all about......make sure to get Havel soon though as our advice about rolling is HUGELY impacted by offing that bloke....earlier the better. I can't say how much I love that his item is obviously useful to him the way he fights....very fitting drop. Could be one of the best models for an early game demi boss...tough but not unbeatable at any level with perseverence. REminder soultron that SL1 runs exist for a reason.....never allow the supposed toughness of an area stop you from doing it early with either the right strategy, the right equipment, or a combo. Havel is all strategy, ironically armour is not the issue despite him wearing one of the most sought after sets inthe game. Also don't forget to use
Lautrec
for the gargoyles and gaping dragon...he is a beast where Solaire is rather lacking in the defense category....he has never dies on me ever, although its true I never used him til later playhtroughs where i didn't relly need him anyway...still his dual wielding shotels are too cool not to get into the mix...
Solaires ranged attacks with Lautrecs melee is a great combo worth looking into!

I had him below half HP the first time I fought him but since I only do 25-35/hit to him, it was really slow going. I just lacked the patience since I had already been playing for about 3 hours in that sitting. I'll go back and get him the next time I play! :p
bring pyro and run up the stairs, or patiently strafe around the tight area...no need for armour as he can one shot all but the tankiest clad individuals anyway.
ah that dude. He's pretty easy to stab.

yep but be careful! he tracks your dodges and can change the direction of his swing even after directing it one way!!!!!! anywhere including behind him is unsafe if timed wrong as he can do a 180 on you mid swing....died SO MANY times assuming I was safe when he started swinging in the wrong direction...at first.

I have started to realize that I can't play this game all the time. If I am tired or having a bad day it can just makes things worse overall. Very few games have made me feel I need to be this mentally prepared for what I am going to do be doing. If I can't get into that "zone" and be able to focus on the game properly I don't even bother.

I tried to look for the Painted World today but didn't find anything. I guess its back to the Tomb of The Giants. Place gives me the creeps though.

Chaos damages scale with your humanity counter: the higher it gets, the higher the damages will be. It caps at 10 humanities I think (?)

Regular weapons require to take a look at your stats. Regular Balder has a an A scale in dexterity iirc, which is really good. So that might be the way to go if you plan to get your Dex stat quite high. I got the Balder pretty early on my first playthrough, and it's still one of my favorite weapons (along with my beloved Great Scythe).
Also know that regular weapons can be temporarily enchanted for additional damages, spiking in absurd amounts of hurt.

Yeah, Im always running around with 10-15 humanity on me (even though thats risky) but even that doesnt really help much
I guess Im going to go the regular path to +15 then

Had an awesome run tonight. My good friend and I, who have tried many times to get into each others worlds to help each other out, with it working maybe 1/10 times, had a great streak where we kept being summoned into each others worlds.

We started with him coming into my world to take out
4 Kings, followed by Nito. 4 Kings just freaked me the fuck out. Creepy area/fight. Are there more than 4 that show up sometimes? My friend had already beat them in his game, and he said that when he died there were more than 4 attacking him. Also, my friend had a weapon to take out the skeletons during the Nito fight, but he equipped the wrong weapon before we jumped down, and by the time he realized this we were in the heat of battle! I thought we might not make it, but we managed to just barely take him out before my friend and I were both almost dead with me(the summoner) having no flasks left.
We then alternated going into each others worlds to take out
Ceaseless Discharge in his world, then Demon Firesage in his, then my world, followed by taking out the demon centipede in his, and then my world.
Ended up heading into
Lost Izalith, got to Bed of Chaos in his world, busted both orbs towards the back ends, then the floor collapsed and took my friend out
, back to my world I go.

I think we played together for almost the entirety of 3 and a half to 4 hours and it was a blast.

Havel & Hydra down. Havel's drop is pretty ballin'. Can equip better base DEF armour now, although I like my Wanderer set because of all of the magic, poison, and bleeding resistances it seems to provide. I've started to use titanite shards to craft the Wanderer set to +3.

Man... after I beat the Hydra, I went up the ladder nearby. (Defeated this crazy golden crystal golem first.) Ended up in another part of Darkroot Garden... has a little bridge nearby. And a tonne of slowdown. I didn't feel like fighting any more of those stone golems with the greatswords and the slowing buff, so I hugged the walls. I didn't know where I was, so I tried to play it safe. It seems like I've not yet been to that area because the little treant trashmobs feel stronger... I feel like I'm not downing them in 2-3 shots like I am with the ones near the blacksmith where the Titanite Demon guards the transition zone between the Undead Parish and Darkroot Garden.

Things started to go downhill fast. Got swarmed by treants, stunlocked, then nearly died. I had about 12K souls on me, so I didn't want to risk it. Used a Homeward Bone to retreat to the bonfire in the cliff face in Darkroot Garden, near the watchtower where you originally face Havel.

I can't put this game down. I thought I was done for the day... just sunk another 2 hours in.

unfortunately, animating fur has dem slowdowns, at least that what I think it is.

The awesome thing about DS is that if you see it, you can go there. I feel that the team at FS didn't really optimize sightlines and/or lighting counts in certain areas. Hopefully they learn for DS3. :p

Beat Four Kings last night on my second attempt. First time I dropped down and died pretty much straight away and thought it was going to be a nightmare, then the second time it seemed to go a lot smoother.

Really liking Quelaag's Furysword so far, need a little bit more Demon Titanite to get it up to +5. Also trying to level up my Endurance enough to allow me to have <50% with a full set of Ornstein armour on to take advantage of the Dark Wood Grain Ring without also having to use Havel's Ring, should only be a couple more points away from it, but it's starting to cost a hell of a lot of souls to level up.

Think i'll head to Duke's Archives now and see what happens there. From what i've read most people seem to say that if i've got through Ornstein & Smough and then the Four Kings solo, nothing after that should be too bad - does that sound about right to you guys?

There's not really any evidence for Priscilla being Seath's daughter beyond the fact that they're both white. It's not impossible, but it's far from confirmed.

Yes indeed, we will probably never know for sure but I think that you may be right about what you said about her.
I just received the Design Work and one detail about Prescilla just blew my mind.
She was supposed to be sitting in Firelink Shrine and help the player like the Maiden in Black in Demon's Souls. And who was planned to be the boss of Painted World? Nito...

I'm back at the Four Kings on NG ++ after putting the game down after beating NG+ a few months ago.

Man, these guys are tough now. The charge in with heavy poise armour and take them out one at a time by two handing method no longer seems to work for me (using Uchigatana +15). I've only just rung the first bell and gone straight for Sif, so it's not urgent that I defeat them now, but I'd kind of like to donate some of my humanities to Darkwraith, because I really want the creepy looking armour set.

I don't know waht to do.

I'm currently SL32 (35 INT, 18 DEX, 10 STR, 12 VIT).
Finished with The Depths, and went into Blighttown. It's been a few days since I played, so I didn't remember and didn't check if I have moss and... TOXIN, you're dead. I tried for a couple more times, but left.

I fucking hate blighttown, and skipped it with my first character on NG+, but I don't think I can afford to skip it this time. There is some nice loot down there. It kills me that I know for a fact I can easily skip it :(

I could do Darkroot Garden/Basin, but I'll have to ring that second bell one way or another.

Meanwhile, I beat Stray Demon (SL27 :p) with spells only. Man, sorcery is so overpowered in this game :p

Didn't even hit me once, and I had so much trouble with him with my first character.

The trading nest is back at the asylum, on a little ledge to your left as you're coming down the path towards the building.

did you go the very back of the lake ;)

OK thanks for the response (thanks Soultron as well). I guess I was expecting something a lot more like Demons' Souls structurally.

It would be Demon's Souls if Demon's Souls was completely integrated into one gigantic level

Last night I popped the game back in after a while so I could work on my platinum. Got invaded by the same dude three times over the course of an hour. Murdered him so hard each time. God I forgot how much I love this game. No rage message, though, which actually disappointed me a bit.

You will want to comb the area near where the golem/hydra used to be. Since you have been and left and quit etc. everythign should be set for your return.

Depends on what you want from Blightown...if you go the back way it really isn't that bad. YOu could go pick up the armour that enables high curse resist, but this is replaced with other curse resist. There are other dex weapons, the only irreplaceable item is the Eagle shield for me. I suggest you put on the slumbering dragon crest ring after you ring both bells and get it form sen's, then return to loot blighttown backward...many enemies are facing the wrong way and you can backstab the shit out of them by sneaking up from behind each. DO bring all the poison and curse resist stuff you can get though.

YOu can get two glvoes per playthrough althogh I think if you start as a pyro you can not get three ; einygi won't give if you are a pyro (I think) not confirmed. he guy at firelink from lower undead burg is one asnd einygi form the chaos covenant is another.

getting tired of grinding before ng+ so ill probably move on soon.

ive gotten all guaranteed slabs, kindled a bunch of bonfires, scoured most places in all of the areas (i think, still a few glowing drops i havent been able to find a way to get to, like in catacombs by the blacksmith.), completed npc quests that i could, traded with Snuggly.

not sure what left besides farming for more chunks...

anything im missing?

It sounds like you've pretty much covered all your bases. A couple other things you may or may not want to consider before moving on to NG+ are
killing any optional bosses you haven't gotten around to yet and taking care of any weapon upgrades that require embers since you need to collect all the embers again on NG+.

If you're of a bit of a bloodthirsty inclination you can also
kill the Firekeepers for their souls and the blacksmiths for their hammers. None of the hammers are needed for the platinum trophy, and it's not hard to max out your flask almost as soon as NG+ starts without ever killing a Firekeeper, so there aren't any major incentives to doing this beyond satisfying a completionist instinct and/or pure sadism. Killing the Fair Lady with the Old Witch's Ring equipped is particularly harsh.

The last concern is to buy the Master Key if you didn't take it as your gift. You'll definitely want it in NG+.

From the bone pit with the wheel skeletons, you head towards the exploding head guys opposite the way to Pinwheel, there's a crevice that leads into some more catacombs. Climb up a ladder and find the room with the sarcophagus in the middle and the two obvious break-away floors on either side. Fall through there, and you're just above one of the items.

Drop back down to the floor and repeat, only keep going until you're in the crypt with the titanite demon and the sarcophagus to Nito's chamber. Head out of the room into the catacombs, there should be a little stub of a platform that doesn't quite reach across to the doorway (Doorway leads to the room with the breakable wall that goes down to where you get the Darkmoon Seance ring). Take a leap of faith and drop off the cliff to the right of the stubby platform, there's a series of small drops that lead you to the other glowing corpse that has the Cleric's set.

You and me both. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are the most exhilarating gaming experiences I've ever had.

For the PS3 people who played Demon's Souls first, though, we had a sense of understanding and an underlying appreciation of Dark Souls from our experiences in Boletaria. For the 360 people, they had the wonder, excitement, and fear of coming into a world that doesn't hold your hand. It's hard to say which of those experiences I would have preferred.

Oh God, my game totally just crapped out! I was in Darkroot Garden, just opened the door with the crest (been there before, but the other way), on my way to kill Sif - I get disorientated here so easily, and got amBUSHed by all the tree enemies there, there were loads - I was doing OK, but one of them got me in that grab attack, so I was mashing triggers buttons and the sticks, I must've rolled off the edge (although I didn't see it) and fell down into Darkroot Basin, at least the area name came up on screen, I carried on falling into a void of the foilage/rock textures of that area, then it turned black, then green, then black again - all the time still falling, but not dead (~65% health bar), then finally it turned white and said 'you died' whilst my character model look like it had been spiked through the gut and hung up on a pole!

Now I have to get back because I was rockin' 10 humanity. Fuck!

after the Elite Knight set nerf, is the default Knight class armor set worth upgrading?

The Balder, Dark, and Sun armors are pretty much all better while weighing more or less the same amount, but the first is kinda stupid looking, the second requires ranking up a Covenant, and the third requires you to do something unforgivable to attain, so if you want to roll with the Knight armor then go for it.

The stats of armor outside of Poise is rarely the deciding factor in whether you live or die anyhow, so I choose armor almost purely for looks.

Yeah, I did :) Only used 3-4, and now finished with Quelaag.

I'm seriously starting to feel bad with myself over this character.
I've got 35 INT and the starting Catalyst, and I'm killing bosses with not much effort.

I'm on my third playthrough, and so I know the bosses pretty well. I hardly got hit fighting Quelaag. I start every fight trying to use melee, but as I'm using an unupgraded Scimitar (I've got 20 DEX, and looking to use a DEX scaling weapon), and I'm doing very little damage to anything with my weapon, I end up switching to using my spells.

I feel simply unfair and the game has not been that challenging this way so far.
The fact I know bosses pretty well and can sit back and blast them with spells from a distance is making it even easier :/

Sorcery is way overpowered in this game.

yeah this was unclear to me during my several playthroughs, but I was unable to get any more than two flames no matter how much I tried to go for all three options..,if anyone ever got three I'm sure we would have heard about it by now!!!!! I guess its actually the other bloke in Firelink that perhpas won't give you a flame if you alreday have one.

Just take it slow, the tree creatures are definitely one of those enemies that MUST be drawn out one at a time...any more than 2-3 and it is sure death. Depending on what ledge you fell off, there may be a better way of getting back to your souls with out having to aggro enemies. If you have teh magic tht allows it, you can turn into a tree yourself and they won't see you as long as you inch your way and don't move too close (basically being a tree increases your detction range but does not make you invisible while moving.)

I should probably buy that 20K crest to unlock the door in Darkroot Garden. The forest gets so expansive and the only two fires I have in the area are the cliffside cave that leads to VotD and the blacksmith catacombs that leads back to the UP.

Found the forest covenant. There's this boss battle (sealed door with white light coming out of it, opened it, saw a barren arena, didn't want to trigger the fight with 0 estus) but does being a part of this covenant mean I can't engage the boss? I wasn't really sure about the riddle Alvina/the cat was mentioning. Basically I got, "abandon your pursuit of this guy, he doesn't exist (because I'm only a puppet and not the actual leader of the forest guild...)!"

For the 360 people, they had the wonder, excitement, and fear of coming into a world that doesn't hold your hand. It's hard to say which of those experiences I would have preferred.

I remember the first time I had to go thru 3-1 in Demon's Souls. After moving inch by inch in the level, I realized that my hands were actually shaking and sweating, that never happened to me in any game I played before, I was like 'holy shit I'm fucking shaking!' THIS GAME...!!

Beat NG+ Four Kings for the first time after Power Within got severely nerfed.

That was... an adventure. Pretty much had to use all of my sorcery and then some. And even then, I pretty much gave up on trying to damage race them and I was dodging swings from all four of them at once mid-way through the battle.

But that's done. Will probably go into the Darkmoon Covenant for the first time, just to see how that is.
