Darkest Dungeon | “The Road” of dungeon crawlers, on Kickstarter, GAFfer-made

Ladies and gentlemen, Darkest Dungeon just reached its first stretch goal at $90,000 – Additional Playable Character Class: the Houndmaster.

Next one in $10k, here we go!

From the Kickstarter page comments, a quick description of the newly unlocked Character Class

Red Hook Studios said:
Gruff and reclusive, the Houndmaster moves quickly and strikes hard with his cudgel and viscous Bludhound.
A seasoned hunter, he brings a great deal of scavenging and survival expertise to the campfire.

Art will be posted in a few days!

Thanks so much everyone, your support is humbling and inspiring.

The only thing I'm worried about us how satisfying the actual exploration will be. Like if we are only ever moving down the same corridors for hours with no real change in style or content, it could get boring or mind numbing fast.

you should message them & ask them and see how they answer if it's evolving as you move along the board & defeating certain things or going certain directions changes the story on the spot then that would be really interesting

This looks absolutely amazing. Backed.
I wish you guys all the best and I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this in the near future.

Darkest Dungeon just reached its second stretch goal at $100,000 – Brigands! Wandering Mini-bosses with special rewards.

Next stop, $125,000 with Multiple random Boss variants in each Dungeon!

No day 1 update? With the first and second goal reached already I'm surprised nothing has been written.

It looks a bit odd indeed but they did say that they're working on it to be a worthy update and not just a shallow "Yay, thanks for the support guys!".
They also were overwhelmed by the succesful start with messages and so on.

I believe thy mentioned on twitter that the update will feature a Q&A. So let us just sit back and relax ;)

Oh I'm just making an observation, not desperate for one haha.

Guessing it will include the promised artwork for the new classe too

Yup, I know :)

Unfortunately the artwork for the new class, the Houndmaster, will come in a couple of days (Chris wrote it in the comments of the KS page,
I pasted it a couple of posts above) so I doubt it will be featured in the coming update..!

My bad, missread it and missed the time it'd take for it to arrive.

Backer update is currently being written by the person sitting next to me.

It's been a crazy day.

Good to know, thanks.

Really not a fan of there being a kickstarter exclusive class, but still will probably pledge.

Where does it say that?

Usually, unless specified, a stretch goal is additional content for any buyers of the game and not exclusive to backers.

That's even worse, I don't think fans that discover a game later should not be able to get such content when as you said it's not MP and therefore them getting such content affects no one else.

An exclusive class may look too exclusive but it's one way the developers have chosen to reward their backers and it's part of the hype campaign of the KS.
People are also paying more to access this content: it is no different than a limited edition (actually, it's a digital deluxe edition).

Hyper Light Drifter also did something similar with an exclusive main character that comes with its own distinct look, animations and evil backstory.

With that being said, I understand what you mean – an exclusive character class skin would look more fair to late fans, but this how exclusivity and limited editions work
and you have to give something consistent/special to those that decided to put early their money to fund the game. In my opinion, I see nothing wrong with Darkest Dungeon.

So how randomized is the affliction system? How much dumb permanent stuff can happen randomly that the player can't do anything about? I ask because it's a serious concern I have. There's nothing I really detest more than some kind of problem rising up because the rng decided to go BECAUSE REASONS and make a situation worse.

Edit-Wait, so is it confirmed there will be a backer exclusive class? As in, you can't get it at all if you don't back the game? Because that literally would do the opposite of making me want to put any money down on that. I am absolutely sick of pre order shit cutting into actual content.

It has always been there.

To be more accurate, only backers that pledge $49+ get access to the exclusive backer only character class. So not all the backers will get him/her.

I wouldn't compare this situation with the pre-order shit.

It's not the same as a deluxe edition. The extra content from deluxe editions is usually also available as dlc for people who didn't opt in early and every time it isn't it causes a stink

I'd say it's worse, what they should do is give a kickstarter exclusive redesign for a character instead. So everyone get's every class, but those who pledged get a plague doctor who is drawn completely different or something like that.

Yes I understand your point – that's what I meant with "more fair for late fans" in my previous post and actually suggested your same proposal.
All I'm saying is that I'm not against the exclusive character class; mayhaps try to voice your concern on the KS page or on their twitter account if you really believe is unfair but still want to support the project.

And, yes, that is correct too. I understant the argument "it shouldn't have been a gameplay element but rather a limited aesthetic only item" but that's not how the developers decided to reward the backers that put a good amount of money in the KS.

I'm in, but I have to say a few of the stretch goals seem a bit flaky.

$50K to add in editing character colors? Somehow that doesn't inspire confidence that the goal requires the investment, IMO. Just a thought.

It's a reward for backers plus it nets them more money than if they didn't do it.

Complaining that you or others will not have stuff in the game that won't affect it at all is counter-productive and is actually more detrimental to these things than including it.

I believe they're aware of this and actually asked in the first Update if we would like to prioritize the implementation of Town Events before the color customization.
The latter sounds a bit silly since it comes in a pretty late stage and looks much more less important than other lower stretch goals.

This is also why many find the $200,000 to be the ideal goal to hit. Not that I mind if the KS can be more successful, but the +$250k goals aren't... very exciting.

Eh, KS is basically a donation service, so its kinda scummy that on top of less accountability the people that decide to back this project that might not get made otherwise are rewarded by not having a class because you dont donate what developers thing you should be donating to get the full experience Its weird to see this supposed smallish games using tactics straight out of the EA playbook.

Im pulling my donation, the people working on this are confident enough on their unfinished product that the are already cutting it up, so im confident ill buy it on steam sales if its good enough, that is if it even gets made since they can just say they ran out of funds with no real consequences.

Yeah, the fact that it costs $49 to restrict content from future buyers makes it sound even worse.

The thing is that if you wouldn't have these persons willing to put early their money, this game wouldn't have been made.
It is of course easy to criticize the backers reward now that Darkest Dungeon is funded and the campaign is going very well.

And consider we aren't speaking of EA, Ubisoft or Activision Blizzard here. It's their way to thank their first supporters, otherwise this wouldn't be possible.
But you could say I'm biased since I'm a supporter of this KS ;)

This is turning into a debate about pre-order practices: I say, voice your concern to the developers, they're listening. I'd like to post updates and infos about the campaign from now on.

This looks awesome. If a DRM-free release was a definite part of the deal then I'd be all over it, but I can't back games that are Steam only. I'll be real excited if I see it released on GOG or wherever next year, though.

The only thing they are rewarding their first supporters is a cheaper version of the game at launch if it even gets made, the real rewards is not for the believers of this, its for the ones that meet their criteria of what constitutes as a donation worthy of getting a complete, potentially game-changing characters class. Again, people are free to donate to it and I got not beef with it, but it feels kinda shady that on top of getting donation cash, answering to no real publisher, availability to distribute the game any game you want, they thank all this benefits by implicitly saying that one of the version is already lesser before the damn thing is made. And the worst part of it is that the people getting this lesser build is not some small insignificant minority, it is hundreds of people that have given a total of $44318 of cash, that is 40,99% of current funding, I dont feel those people are getting treated fairly considering that money is consequence free in all but name.

I have backed a lot of projects and I got no problem with certain rewards for the big expenders, but one thing is a bullshit sword with your name on it and another is a new variable that changes the way the game is played.

And your point about speaking? Well that why im doing it here cos it turns out the entry backer people apparently have no option to participate on development polls (its not part of that tier), so not only the low-tier people get no new character, they also get no real voice or vote during the development for the game they donated.

Thanks for the proper response unlike the spamming guy with the Cthulu avatar.

"Lesser version", "game-changing class", "how the game is played" look rather heavy assumptions considering we don't even know the details of the mechanics and rewards.
But let's not get into semantics, because that's not the point here.

I can answer the issue with what you call low-tier people, you miss the context: at the beginning there wasn't such tier.
The lowest one was WANDERER and you can see it gives you access to the development pools and also Early Access on Steam.

What happened is that the developers received feedback that there were people willing to support the project but were just interested in the final product,
the game, and didn't want or had no time/interest to be involved with the development of the game they donated. Thus, NOMAD was created.
One more option for potential backers because the fans requested it. Don't be so negative ;)

Another thing: the guy that made this is a FellowGAF (and is reading everything we write).

I find it hilarious that we're turning on our own.

On our own!

This is unnatural.

I feel you two are overreacting, we have an issue with the kickstarter that we find reasonable. We're not 'turning' on anyone nor are we being all that negative.
