David Jaffe: GAMEPASSA - why I still love it!

Gamepass made a lot of sense for my son during his teenage years. I know I would have gotten a lot of mileage out of it. Enthusiasts posting on a v.bulletin message board in 2025 probably don't have much use for it to make the value prop appealing, but the people are out there. However, I don't think there are enough teenagers and first-time gamers to make the ROI it needs. Even if you hate the business prospect of it, anyone here can say it would be amazing to have as a kid, unless you've got some breaded-up parents.

I can see where he is coming from. If I had a LOT of time to play games, I would agree with him. Gamepass is definitely worth $30 if you can take advantage of all day one games, but I do NOT have enough time. I typically only get to play around 400 hours per year. At $20 a month it was barely worth it, and I only kept it because I could stack it on sale and get big discounts. At its current price, and with most of the cheaper stacking opportunities gone I won't likely extend it when it runs out.
 
I'm not surprised and it is a good deal for someone like Jaffee he just plays games all day and more then that he doesn't ever really stick with one game for long. I think it's rare for him to actually beat games.
 
If you actually listen to the video, he's quite right. If you are completing as many aaa game in a year as he does, it is still a good deal. The thing is, he streams and it's a part of his work. So it's convenient to have this library without having to buy each individual title.


But if you're someone who has 4-5 hours a week to play, it's easy to understand that it might not be worth spending 30$/month.

If Sony were to offer a subscription service with day one AAA games for 30$ a month people here would argue for it even
when Sony doesn't have a single game as valuable as COD

$30 a month is not cheap but it's the reasonable price for GP Ultimate let's be honest

is it just me or does Gamefly seem more appealing? I know some of our resident AARP member posters use it. It's literally just rent any game, rather than the games MS has signed deals for.

When gamepass was $7.50 a month or whatever they introduced it as on PC it was a cool novelty that was worth dealing with their awful launcher for. At $20+ a month I'm good.

Since I know he's been in the thread, I'll address him directly.

There's more than just monetary cost at play here, David. There's also time/opportunity cost. You're in a small minority of people who can afford to spend both money and time. Most people can't afford both.

My best friend of forever is a skilled HVAC tradesman, makes plenty of money, and has plenty of disposable income. But he's frequently on call, has familial obligations and other hobbies like his weekly pool league, so his time is at a premium. For the longest time he's kept his Game Pass Ultimate subscription on auto-renew because, at $20 a month, it was barely a blip on his radar, even if he went a couple months without turning on his Xbox. In our group text after the price hike was announced he was one of the first to post that unsubscribed. When asked why, he said it was because the price increase forced him to consider how much he actually uses the service and he came to the conclusion that he wasn't using it enough to justify the new price tag.

I can't imagine he's alone in this situation.

Conversely, there are people like myself who are disabled and/or live on a fixed income and have plenty of time to spend, but not enough money.

Yeah, Gamefly is legit good for a wider range of selection. However you'd have to get used to its shipping logistics and plan out your play queue. Their pre-owned game sale is very competitive, just got a copy for Doom The Dark Ages for $29.99.

But with the physical medium decline with acceleration, I am afraid that Gamefly won't be in business for too long.

No, I don't think people would argue for a Sony day one service if it existed.

$30 is not reasonable if you aren't interested in renting a bunch of games you had no intention of playing.
 
Then don't subscribe to it. Premium still exists and will get most of the games from Ultimate. Could even sub for a single month to Ultimate to play a specific Day 1 game, then drop down.

It's a trend I've seen over the last 10 years where so many people are desperate NEVER to be seen coloring outside of the lines that anyone who values their own personal views and opinions is seen as trying to be an edgelord. If you had watched the video before commenting (I know it's hard to do; getting those little dopamine drip 'thumbs up' kudos on the bottom right of your post means EVERYTHING!!!) you would see the video is simply explaining why I still love Gamepass even with the shitty price increase. Nowhere in the video am I trying to convince anyone else they need to put up with the price increase. Not at all what the video was about (and you would know that if you had watched it).

Usually that happens before early adulthood age who try to find their real identity, the younger version of identity crisis.
 
They are just trying to make as much profit off the backs of their existing user base now, because in 2 years they won't have a user base.

When PS6 is announced people will be clamoring for Xbox to announce their next console, and they will pretend for 3 months like they have something coming, and then it will be Dreamcast all over again. They will announce there is no next console, and Gamepass is cancelled, and they are just a games publisher now. They will make a lot more money selling COD and Bethesda games and Blizzard games for $80 each on PC and Playstation and Switch 2.

They needed Gamepass to become ubiquitous like Netflix and it didn't happen. This Price increase Guarantees it will never happen and proves they aren't even trying anymore.
