David Jaffe: Sad, frustrating, potentially super disrespectful news dropping tomorrow about Playstation

I was hoping this day wouldn't come, but its likely layoffs - they hired too much too fast during the pandemic too. Those studios grew too fast.

Guess we'll see the real impact tomorrow
Just about every tech company overhired thinking COVID sales growth would permanent trajectories into the stratosphere.

If anyone wants to read about the biggest Wild West COVID rush of growth and sinking into the toilet, read up Peloton from 2020 to 2022 and be amazed at the difference in sales, employees, stock price etc… in two years.

They already saw an unknown number of layoffs to at least one studio a few days ago.

I don't think any single studio closure would warrant this kind of tweet. Sounds like a policy or business strategy shift, but I really can't think of anything that would be plausible. Going full GaaS makes no sense, and neither does suddenly becoming a non-woke company. Would be cool for me personally but what would that even achieve for the business? Their games sell pretty well in the current state of things and I'll never not play a great game just because there is a conspicuous and disproportional amount of DiVeRsiTy in it.

Edit: Due to Activision's purchase, Sony decided to sell their PlayStation brand to Apple.....

Harrison is the young looking bald guy right? The guy who gets hired by a ton of tech companies and two years later it's a disaster and jumps to another company to drive it into the dirt???? That guy?

Media Molecule shut down is my guess, I saw a reply tweet (since deleted) from a verified account saying: "it's true, I spoke to John". Well, John Beech was made the Creative Director of MM earlier this year but who knows, lots of John's out there lol.
Honestly...i don't even know how they are still opened.

Not hating on the studio cause they are incredibly talented...but Dreams flopped so bad and their previous game was Tearaway for the PSP Vita released 8 years ago. A game that wasn't successful as well.
They have been living in the shadows of LittleBigPlanet, an IP whose last entry made by them was released in 2011, 12 years ago.

Hopefully this isn't about another studio closing but who knows.

I'll believe it when it happens, the fact Jaffe mentions his members-only video makes it seem more likely to me he's exaggerating in order to get subs

edit: plus the fact the usual Xbox trolls on Twitter were seeming ready to go with this like ColtEastwood (who we know doesn't know shit about anything) 🤨

Guys I know something but I'm not going to say hat it is I'm just going to tweet in vague platitudes all night long
I'm guessing Jaffe doesn't want to break the news before others (possibly affected) know but couldn't pass up on the publicity of knowing, so we end up with this circus.

I get the feeling MM is a studio Sony would keep around no matter how bad the financials are for sake of their unique games hoping that'll draw PC creator communities to the platform.

It could be that they have Roblox now so they don't care much about the bolded. It's hard to tell with such vague information but I hope they keep MM around too.

and better writing.

The problem is, on PC, there are far superior game making tools and platforms. No legit PC creator is going to go make games in Dreams. The fact that MM has not been shuttered yet is already a minor miracle.

I wouldn't really say this is awful or the "death of the Playstation we know".
Really. In what universe is media molecule shutting down garner this reaction from jaffee. They were given a ton of rope and failed extraordinarily.

The way this is written it sounds like a sex scandal involving one of the heads of a ps studio.

It reads more to me that there is going to be a massive shift in what constitutes the Playstation Brand. Mind you, this already happened a few times over the years, with the most recent being Jim Ryan's shift to make Playstation a "luxury" brand. So I don't see what could be the case for these tweets.

H

Huh....This IS a very high possibility tbh
Yea, that's what I'm guessing. Why that means old PS would be dead, I have no idea. I love MM, but they haven't put out anything in years and their last game, while fun to mess around in, didn't light up the charts. I doubt their train game will, either.

Unfortunately for the employees that it affects, all companies are currently cutting the fat after the COVID scare is over. It gave them time to access their situation and figure out what is weighing them down financially.

Please don't get me excited.

I have not been happy with the Sony of the last 8-9 years with most of their games landing in the "disappointing" pile for me, with really baffling business decisions (censorship, poor treatment of japanese devs, focusing on heavy handed/patronizing narratives, etc) - so I wonder if this "awful news" will actually be good news.

We shall see in a few hours.

100% with you!

Way to put yourself out there. It's like a teaser for a trailer thay may or may not come out.

Spider-Man 2 multi-platform? Tencent? - hopefully nothing. 1 Studio closing is not major or changing Sony, unless it's ND.

Playstion plus more increases? price increases? $80 games?

What kind of pivot could they make that would cause this much fear? Just massive layoffs? Several studios are consolidating?

Ps bought several studios and partners with Jim in charge. And most of those are all doing well.

A cultural shift? Like some major news about Japanese leadership? Maybe in relation to Jim leaving.
