Dead Rising 3 created "to go after the Call of Duty player"

Quick lesson, pubs:

Stating that you're 'going after the Call of Duty player'. Even looking like you're 'going after the Call of Duty player'. That tells me one thing: You're not going after me.

I'm not meaning to imply it's automatically wrong; the CoD fanbase, collectively, has a heck of a lot more money than I do. It's a risky move, though; you've gotta get them to actually *notice* you, when they're playing CoD, at the risk of alienating, well, me. It's hard to chase a new audience when holding onto an old one - Nintendo have struggled with that to some extent, and, well, they're better at this than you are, Capcom.

Good luck.

They're gonna alienate their existing fanbase, and the COD fanbase won't jump onboard because the previous games alienated them already.

You know, just like what happened with -insert a million different fucking failed attempts here-

BUT YEAH CAPCOM YOU'RE DEFINITELY GOING TO DO IT THIS TIME.
The industry in an eggshell:

Tobias: You know, Lindsay, as a [game publisher], I have advised... a number of [developers] to explore a [game sequel] where the [game] remains [a numbered sequel to series with a strong fanbase who enjoys the unique things it brought to the table], but [forced] to explore [getting rid of those things and chasing after a totally different market that is nearly impossible to get the attention of].
Lindsay: Well, did it work for those people?
Tobias: Haha, no, it never does. I mean, these people somehow delude themselves into thinking it might, but... but it might work for us.

This is the ultimate anti-Neogaf statement a PR can release.

The game looked really bad to me, from the brownish look to the lifeless scenarios. The last one seemed infinitely more fun than this.

i don't think a company who wants to go after the mythical call of duty player who buys more than two or three games a year is too interested in neogaf-proofing their statements.

re4 was a shooter, that's a quite popular demographic for me.
Tdead rising has never been something else than killing lots of zombies and That's what i saw in the video. Now we have a city, instead of the same closed mall bullshit. I can deal with some crap if it doesnt limit the survival aspect. I dont think you will be calling airstrikes so often like cod.

So, in other words, you can't answer my question. Shinji Mikami CREATED the third person shooter genre with RE4, so no. TPS wasn't a popular genre at the time.

People are upset about the "WHY" in this change of direction, because it also shows a lack of conviction and creativity. It's a bad sign, no matter how you slice it... and it's a story we've seen all too often in the past year.

I am actually happy that they did this , no reason for me to own a xbone now or ever.

it definitely helped, only game on Xbone that i would for sure buy is Titanfall, Microsoft did a great job in getting that exclusive. I'm playing Halo 4 now and i'm pretty much done with that franchise i think, not enjoying the campaign much at all.

I'm quite grateful Capcom is making it easy for me to not want this. Guess this is what bribes get you, bad exclusives.

They tried to remove Frank West from the series in DR2, which failed so badly that they eventually released a piece of DLC that shoehorned him back in and wiped the original protagonist. And now they're doing it again in DR3? Good luck with that.

I think companies should know that the only people that want Call of Duty experences will go and buy Call of Duty, let that series be what it is and please don't change your franchise because of one series that only works well for what it is.

Whereas all the ex-Capcom people at Platinum are all about realising what it is they do best and trying to do it as well as they possibly can. Even if you're not a fan of the company or their games there is something to be said for knowing your strengths, knowing your market, and playing to that. As well as knowing that you aren't going to please everyone.

The problem with these changes in direction isn't so much the change in direction, at least from a design and marketing standpoint, but when you still think you can somehow wing it and pull the old audience along with you. Some companies seem terrified of saying, "Look, those games were great but we wanted to do something different this time."

Capcom has a nasty habit of alienating their old fanbases entirely, to the point of actually insulting their tastes. It's moronic, counterproductive, and it shows.

If they want to go in another direction, that's fine. Don't do it to chase numbers because that just proves that you don't know what the hell you're doing... and at the same time, respect the lore, tone, and the fanbase that came before, even if you're going to mix things up.

Titanfall is supposedly only a timed exclusive.

Didnd't look like call of duty inthe trailer, at all.
The timer in dead rising was a terrible terrible idea, timed quests are no fun, never were.

I hated dead rising 2 (juvenile game with pos gameplay) , the sandboxy large map looked interesting to me in dead rising 3

shooter has always been a popular genre even on consoles, Im not talking about first or third person. Look at what halo did in 2001. Going for a shooter instead of a survival, was appealing to a wider audience, no doubt about it.
im not trying to spin anything, I despise today's capcom, but game looks fun to me. Series was becoming stale with 2 and having an open city is a better thing to me.
We're not talking of dmc with his dumbed down gameplay, we're talking about a series where you kill things. I can understand beeing upset by the change of tone, but this to me is still dead rising.

I wouldn't mind them taking a risk in order to explore interesting new creative avenues for the series, but they aren't talking about new ideas, they're talking about trying to fit the game into what they think a wider demographic wants. Oh well, there are other zombie games.

Getting rid of the timer is dumbing down the game play. I don't care about a tacked on mode. Air strikes is dumbing down the game play. It is not remotely dead rising except in name. It be like if they renamed PvZ garden warfare to COD. It has shooting but it ain't call of duty.

You know how games often force you to wiggle the stick when enemies grab you? Well, in Dead Rising 3, you can shake your arms to get them off.

What a bummer... I really had high hopes for this one. Dead Rising 1 got me to purchase a 360 and is one of my favorite games - I even loved Dead Rising 2...

Making this "realistic" is just pointless... why be like everything else out there? Homogeneity is one of the worst things to come out of this generation.

Capcom is making all the wrong moves. I mean, holy shit, not every one of your franchises is going to sell 25 million copies.

It's not just Capcom though - all publishers seem to want their major series to sell 6-7 million copies and more. They don't seem the understand that it's just not possible. If a game sells even 2 million copies and makes a profit, it should be maintained and its strengths built upon to add to a publisher's portfolio, not changed so it more closely resembles a completely unrelated game which happens to sell a lot more.

I dont like the time thing too.
do you know what are the conditions that allow you to call an airstrike? Because i dont think you can call that so easily.
If you will be calling airstrikes and tanks every 2 minutes, I will never buy this game.

It looks good to me but State Of Decay will be hard to top not to mention I hate the Dead Rising series but I'm hyped for this one.

Because they like (or liked) the series itself and they dislike the direction in which it seems to be going.

As if the first game wasn't an "open world game with zombies." It won't be the same game without the timer but getting into the car and imagining unlocking the mega man blaster was bringing back memories.
