Dead Rising 3 created "to go after the Call of Duty player"

Sounds unfortunate. I could deal with the aesthetic changes and I was happy to leave the mall but I do not want the strict saving and time limits being messed with.

Where's that thread asking why 'dudebro' has a negative connotation?

You might have missed the point of that conversation.

Why don't people play the nightmare mode that has the timelimit just like DR1?

Honestly, the fact that the time-limit has been pushed to the background unless you choose the most hardest difficulty setting makes me worried that it's not very well implemented into gameplay.

There's also the equally annoying fact that they've stripped the game of its very soul. Gone are the days of dressing up in crazy outfits and using equally crazy weapons to defeat zeds and, more importantly, psychopaths. I mean who here doesn't remember their first encounter with Adam the Clown from DR1? Or Cletus or the convicts. or the number of other great psychopaths that were littered throughout the game.

Dead Rising was about the time limit, but it was also about the humour aspect just as much. Both are intertwined, you have an incomplete game if you only have one. You have a game that's undeserving of carrying the Dead Rising name.

Sorry if that comes across as hyperbole, but I love Dead Rising (1 especially) and to see it stripped of its very soul is beyond heartbreaking.

Don't get me wrong, DR3 is visually impressive and the new direction might result in some interesting gameplay moments, but it's not the Dead Rising I fell in love with and for that reason, I simply cannot be excited for this.

What player were they going after for the first 2 games?

This is an interesting question. I don't know if the first games were actually aimed anyone, they just happened to hit a note with gamers who wanted nothing more than to mess around in a big open world that was populated with zombies and crazy people and the opportunity to dress up and do crazy shit, but the games also offered a much deeper gameplay experience for those who were looking for a very challenging game and offered an incredibly (at the time) unique game mechanic in the timer.

Wow! That was quick: another franchise where Capcom is taking steps to alienate the existing fanbase! Why are they so good at this?

Seriously, something's got to give. The industry, Capcom,...god forbid, core gamers. I can't help but resent the success of Call of Duty, and the blockbuster industry at this point.

Well, they're certainly making it easy to swallow that it's now an X1 exclusive. Nevermind the fact I never even got DR2 beyond that prologue XBLA thing.

Capcom is pointedly trying to appeal to a wider audience in this latest iteration, saying it's going after the Call of Duty player. Gone is the cartoonish visual design, replaced by a more "realistic" interpretation of a viral apocalypse. That change is part of the maturation. By shifting the art style, the combat can be "more visceral" than in previous versions, with "real gore."

What's amazing is that literally nothing in that quote is true. People don't play COD for gore and "more visceral" anything. They play it for the tight controls and gameplay and constant encouragement to continue playing to unlock shit.

It's seriously mind-blowing how many publisher misinterpret the success of that series. It's equally mind-blowing how they also think that not setting themselves apart from the rest is the key to, well, setting themselves apart.

Looked terrible at the XB1 conference imo.

Visually? I thought it looked crazy impressive considering the number of zeds on screen and the destruction.

Gameplay wise? Absolutely.

I guess it's too late to save this, so either I hope the game demo isn't representative of what game is really like (unlikely now considering what Blue Castle have said) or, if there's ever a fourth, they take the opportunity to return the series to its roots and deliver a game worthy of carrying the DR name.

I liked what I saw of the demo. Just looked a tad more serious. It had the crazy weapon combining. They said they'll still have wacky costumes like the servbot. It's got the time limit in for hardcore players. They made the great dead rising 2. I have faith. One quote is not going to change my mind.

Don't judge a game by a single quote!

Well, the series was nice while it lasted. Can't say I have too much faith in this, but good for Capcom if it works.

This seems like the much more reasonable way to respond to a single quote. Perhaps you can do the stuff old fans want to see while at the same time making the game a tad more accesible. From the demo, the sheer number of zeds walking around may make stuff like flares and airstrikes necessary for balance. Waiting on actual gameplay impressions instead of judging a 20 hour game from a single quote. LOL at writing off an entire series because they want to sell more than a million copies.

Trying to dodge these fuckers by staying inside for a while and you go out and *nuh nuh* *nuh nuh* SHIT
Man DR1 was the shit.

Yep. I'm definitely going to dig up my copy and have a quick blast over the weekend. Will try to fit it in between sessions of SoD.

It's the tonal shift of the game that's annoying. It's become serious, it's lost its sense of humour that made the previous games a joy to play.

Will this be possible in DR3? Will it even be as funny if it is possible? I hope so, but I have doubts.

This is getting ridiculous.

Did you guys even play dead rising 2? It already was much more serious than 1.

Actually from what I remember Frank West was more serious than Chuck Greene (he's still Frank West though, a charming dude). Chuck had some cheesy one-liners that Frank didn't have.
Can't comment about the overall game, it's been a long time since I played DR1.

It was, but not offensively so. I would expect this to replace the Servbot heads with Master Chief helmets just to kick me further in the balls.

Oh wow, thats the worst thing I've ever seen in a video game. Those shoes do not go with that outfit at all.

hehe. I could post so many more. I'll miss it.

Of course Frank was more serious. He's covered wars, you know.

While I dislike the tonal and color palette switch, if it's an open world game there will be plenty of opportunities to vary the game up. They literally showed 5 minutes of gameplay and didn't even show a typical escort or quest. There could easily be a grocery store or shopping mall area that gives people the opportunity to laugh. This might just be the marketing message to get more than dead rising 1 players on board. Dead Rising 2 was a more serious better executed story but still had the super goofy stuff from the original. I'm sure you'll be able to pick up tons of stuff in the environment like the showerhead or the movie cardboard cutout.

I hope so and I admire your optimism. I guess I have been a little too hard on DR3 without knowing a lot about the game, but that quote along with the footage threw me for six and has me on edge after what's happened to some of my other beloved series this generation.

I'll keep an eye on any developments with DR3, but I'll certainly be keeping my guard up until they've shown the game still retains everything I loved about DR1, DR2 less so.

they made the great dead rising 2

This is the key point for me. I know not everyone was totally pleased with DR2 but I thought it pretty much surpassed the original in every way. And I still don't get how people think the gameplay shown in the press briefing was such a shift. It looked like your typical DR starting mission to get to the main sandbox.

I'm still super-hyped for this game.
