regarding people saying "it's fun but too repetitive/shallow, you're just killing zombies over and over", when you get right down to it, aren't most games like that? take RE4, 90% of the game was just killing wave after wave of Ganado. How many GOTYs did it net? and compared to Dead Rising there was practically zero difference between its weapons. it was always a single shot weapon of varying power+accuracy with you just standing still and tapping A. hardly compares to choosing to whack golf balls or run them over with a shopping cart or do a wrestling move.
Most games can be boiled down to that. Halo? Lots of shooting, and some driving. Oblivion? You walk around talking to people and killing stuff. Driving games? You turn left and right while moving forwards. Etc. It's all about the implementation.

well not quite. a lot of games add depth. I agree with Halo but with Oblivion you've got the whole character creation, skill sets + choose magic or weapons. then you can go for the main storyline or do lots of little quests (which are very varied and definitely not just hack+slash). then are the other things like thievery or guilds and all that shit. and with driving games you have the different physics sets, whether it's got a setting like Carmageddon or GTR, etc.

but with re4, there really was little variation aside from the boss fights. ditto for Halo (without the boss fights). Soldier of Fortune, only thing that changed were the environments. Dead Rising has as much depth and variation as the majority of games out there.

I guess one other drawback is that there doesn't seem to be that much environmental interaction. Your weapons pass right through shelves, and zombies do the old time "lay flat in the air even though stairs are angled" non-ragdoll thing. I'm guessing that running soft body physics when they die wasn't a top priority for them

still great fun though.

The difference is in scenario design and progression.

Fighting an army of zombies in an open, empty field is quite a bit different than what we saw in RE4, now isn't it?

Capcom nailed the combat system. It just feels so damn right. Everything from the bowling balls to Electric guitars hit just like you'd expect them to.

I can't wait to get to the Hardware store.

you're right. but Dead Rising has all the different mall areas, weapons and non-zombie enemies.

Right, but what do you spend most of the time doing in Oblivion? I've spent over 200 hours on the game now, and probably 195 of that was walking, talking and fighting. That's what you do in the game. My daughter (turned 4 yesterday) plays the game and has fun, and understands her options - go to a cave, talk to people, steal stuff. At the core, it's pretty straighforward. Just like most games.

Dead Rising is a straight-forward beat'em up, but there's the photo system, depth of weapons, skill books, stat leveling, etc. But it's still a simple game mechanic at it's core.

At any rate, my broader point was it's silly to dismiss games like Dead Rising as a simple genre title when a) there's really nothing wrong with that and b) there's way more to the game than just the surface.

to play it during lunch on the 360 at work?? :/

ya know what... we actually do have a 360 at work, but it's some dude's who's greedy as hell. and i doubt it's even connected to live. =\ at least there's only 6 hours of hell left.

That was a pretty fun demo indeed. A few things I disliked though:
- Zombies seem to appear out of nowhere. You empty a complete hallway, go 100 meters away, come back and it's full again.
- Aiming on the left stick. WTF!
- I'm too stupid to find the katana. I'm outside the restaurant and I simply don't know where it is. Stupid me.

Cheers to MaxRPG, who tipped me off about the three cops by the exit to the Courtyard. Three Cops. Three Handguns. Fire it up, boys.

There's 5 cops, but only 2 has handgun IIRC.

I'd imagine the left stick aiming stems from RE4...

Maybe, but considering this is on THE FPS console you'd expect the designers would have noted that we are used to aiming with the right stick...
Btw, there was some tearing for a few seconds at one time, you won't be able to enjoy that game ;)

I should be the last person defending them, but people need to lay off the EGM hate. They gave DR a 7.5, which is still great in my book, considering they need to factor in length, lack of multiplayer, the save system, etc... Not everyone is going to have problems with these things, but they're still issues that EGM needs to point out for the people who will. Just enjoy the demo, and throw review scores to the wind.

Since you're controlling the camera most of the time with the right stick, left stick aiming makes no sense, but I've already adjusted to it. It's just a bit awkward.

Those zombies are sneaky!

It's because you have to shoot with X button. Doesn't matter since you can't move while shooting (a Capcom Zombie game tradition! :lol ).

Go towards the side of the "window" openings to the down floor. In the middle section, there's an awning (sp?) below. It's on top of it.

go into the cofee shop restaurant place upstairs that overlooks the first floor. Jump out of the window onto the orange awning, thats where the katana is

In front of the Columbian Roastmaster (I forget what it's called) on the second floor you can see it lying on the yellow platform.

well technically, if you don't go into aiming mode you can move while shooting :p

A bit more wonky that way though, as you might expect.

You'll need to jump out of the store to land on the awning that the katana is on. Just jump out to the right of the freezer with the OJ.

A first I thought the game was quite bland but now I'm having a blast with it, there is so much to discover and play around with. I just wish there were some real people and missions in the demo, it would give us a better idea of what the game will be like.

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it
Xbox Live continues to amaze me in the midst of the typical summer drought for games.

It's also amazing how polished this game looks and feels. I remember a couple E3s ago when Dead Rising was really 'meh'.

1up likes it actually; they call it "The greatest shitty game you've ever played". Apparently if you miss a storyline event, the storyline just shuts down so you'll have to replay until you know where and when to go.

Preaching to the converted. I just want to know why some people think Dead Rising has less depth than games like RE4. It has atmosphere, good gfx, cool combat mechanics and it certainly beats re4 on story. Why shouldn't it get any GOTYs like re4 did?

xbox live rocks, but it hasnt exactly been the best it could be.

**** this, I can't read any of the text on my regular def tv... good game though.

What text are you guys having trouble reading? I don't understand why I'm not having this problem

Haha, unequip your weapons and press aim then fire.. you spit on em, lmao

You grab a baking ingredient and cooking oil from Jill's Sandwich shop and then take it to the coffee shop upstairs and combine them in a blender, then drink the results and see what happens to the spit. ;)

The game has a few typically japanese issues when it comes to action games but it's still pretty damn fun.

any of the "tutorial" text, the pause menu, the thing that tells you what buttons to press. I think it's because of not having widescreen, it compresses it vertically. I can't read the text, and my view feels constricted.

sangreal said:

the objective text at the top right is kinda tough unless you're right up close with the TV I'm using (then again, I'm playing on like a 20" tv).

Some of the tutorial overlays that come up are pretty tough to make out also.

Damn this demo is awsome :D I just finished it for the sixth time and I just cant get enough of it. Im really hyped for this game and now even more :)

I had some problems tho in the beginning with the controls but after a few tries everything goes smoothly now. But I still cant figure out if I can throw something without using the RT, is that possible?

The demo is cool but they really should have let you continue playing after a cutscene. When the demo started I turned around and got a scene after a second...loading..start demo..woo..

And damn that scene with the wasp! That was so cool lol :D Thats a heavy spoiler for the main story I guess.. Bee's that are infected and they spread the virus or control the humans..like some hive shit or something.. DEAD RISING IS TEH AWSOME!

I guess it depends on how focused the game can be, if you choose to follow that path. RE4 was an experience that lead you through a vast array of unique environments with their own challenges, enemy types, atmosphere, and forward drive. Fighting through the village felt entirely different than working your way through the castle, for instance. There is a lot of variety in the overall experience. If RE4 had simply presented you with an open village and no serious goals or sense of progression, it would have been a lot different.

I'm not speaking about DR yet, though, because I don't know, but I think it could certainly be a candidate. I'm just speaking on what makes RE4 work.

Well, the fact that we've had at least a couple of new things to look forward to each week is better than where we were at last summer, when, letsee... THERE WERE NONE.

N3, Saint's Row, Dead Rising, SF2HF, Galaga, Cloning Clyde, Madden month... and if you've never played Table Tennis or DOA4, you can try them now.

I dunno, not too shabby, IMO.

Here's hoping the Madden demo hits next week and doesn't limit you to 1 minute quarters. :D
