I finally got the game. I've kind of been holding out since I'm a bitch when it comes to scary stuffs. I'm really enjoying the game so far though. I'm only on Chapter 3 I believe. Can't beat it for only 20 bucks. If you've been holding out go and get it.

Games dont really scare me (other than the older silent hill games) but dead space can definitely give me chills some times.

Can't wait to let my gf play DS this weekend. :lol

Hell yeah! Finally got that 1000/1000!

Beat Impossible with only the Plasma Cutter; it was such a rush! :D

Fucking love this game. That makes it the fourth time I've beaten it. <3

Jesus Christ, I am shouting obscenities because of all the shit that pops out at you in chapter 7 after you find the beacon.
I was upgrading at a bench, and when I exit, a slasher appears RIGHT BEHIND ME! Totally scripted. And when I'm carrying back the power cube two of those explosion arm guys appear right next to me.
This fucking game.

I'm stuck on chapter 7. I have to destroy 4 gravity tethers and I can't get to the other side with the huge rock in my way. I can't slow down or turn off the teeth of doom which have already killed me 4 times. What the fuck am I supposed to do?

This fucking game.

I experienced that yesterday, it gave me a jolt :lol .

I struggled at the same point you did. I finally decided to look up a YouTube video and was then able to pass that section.
Basically, you have align yourself so you can jump to the spot where the two arms of the gyroscope rest when it's not moving (it helps if you start off standing on one of the walls, it makes for a shorter jump). As soon as the arms begin to rotate, you want to jump to the asteroid since you should be clear of the arms (which are now moving) and be able to quickly walk outside of the hanger and plant the beacon/destroy the tethers in relative safety. Keep in mind you're in space, so your oxygen will be limited out there.

I'm about 3 hours in... not really feeling it yet. It's not scary at all which is a super bummer. You can totally tell when an enemy is gonna pop up :(

Gonna keep chuggin' though, I got it for $10 new so... can't really complain!

Finally finished! I actually thought the ending felt rushed.
Kendra turns on your back for no reason other than "teh marker iz mien!" and pushing the marker felt like a long escort mission. The final boss was a joke. He looks cool but had such predictable patterns I killed him without losing any health. Zelda has more challenging bosses for Pete's sake. I could also see the screamer ending from a mile away.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed the game. My favorite chapters were 7 and 8 - they were sooo scary. The whole second half of the game, minus the finale, was much better than the first because they really spice up the gameplay just when it start to get stale, and the story starts to get entertaining.

I just reached chapter 2 on round 2 and MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME. My level 6 suit looks like a stormtrooper and I've fully upgraded the plasma cutter, force beam, rig, and stasis module. I finished the first chapter without losing any health! It feels badass even if it's easy. I died like 15 times on medium difficulty so I'm going to try not to die at all this time.

This. Game. Is. Awesome.

Picked this up for $10 shipped last week when EAstore.com was doing that combined coupon deal.

Beat it this weekend.

First off, I have NO IDEA how I managed to finish this game. I scare easy, painfully easy. From the opening scene when you first get attacked to the very end I sat on the very edge of the couch with my hands in pain from clutching the controller. I think the only reason I was able to make it through this game was because of the very mobile controls and my ability to sing happy songs really loud to drown out my fear. Whenever I would see a dark hallway/room I would charge in full barrel singing something like the FinalFantasy10 battle theme. It would usually trigger anything that was going to jump at me so I could run into a corner and then easily deal with what chased me.

So Bravo to Visceral for taking the fantastic RE4/5 formula and making an actual scary game with it.

Storyline was as a whole entertaining, but as a sum of parts really stupid. It felt like the entire game consisted of "Issac we might have a chance if we just.......Dammit! It's offline! You need to go operate it MANUALLY". I hope DS2 isn't the same affair. Still, entertaining story as a whole though and now I'm curious to play Extraction, watch the animated film, and play DS2. If I could run through DS2 2-player with a friend it would be much more fun.

I never ended up buying any of the guns because the plasma cutter was more than enough. Turns out I got a gold trophy for that lol. I had more than enough ammo and health packs by the end, mainly due to taking out enemies with one quick bullets to the legs then running in to stomp.

Story confused me at the end. Obviously DS2 stars Issac so he survives but what the crap was that???
I thought by either making the Hive Mind dormant with the marker, or killing it like you do, it renders the entire Necromorph hive brainless/harmless. If that's the case then what the crap was that weird ghostly girl at the end? Freaked me out to say the least. Also I missed it in the confusion of the last boss fight, what became of the Marker? I didn't catch if it was sitting at the station or on board the shuttle

Are spoiler quotes still necessary at this point? Just curious.

The final girl at the end was probably (almost definitely) a hallucination. You gotta remember, Isaac was exposed to the Red Marker for a long time. He's gone insane at this point (he may have been seriously repressing stuff beforehand as he'd blocked out Nicole's suicide). His mind is irreparably damaged, and this will play into Dead Space 2. He's suffering from dementia like the others, though Isaac seems to be able to handle it somewhat better than everyone else.

The scientist who reverse engineered the Black Marker probably fucked it up. Whereas the Black Marker prevents the Necromorph infestation on Earth without driving anyone nuts, the Red Marker is supposed to create a "dead space" around it to prevent the outbreaks... though I guess it was doing it's job until they removed it... would removing the Black Marker cause insanity as well? The Marker and the Hive Mind I think are battling for dominance in a way. It had kept the Hive Mind at bay until removal. Dunno, I'm just theorizing about it. In any case, the Red Marker (and all of Aegis VII) was likely completely destroyed when the trillion tons of rock came crashing down.

Though it seems like the Ishimura itself survived the shockwave. There's a comic coming out soon called Dead Space: Retribution, it seems that the Ishimura survived and that the government and Unitologists are both trying to get to it.

Beat this last night and had to say it's easily my number 2 game of the gen so far, after Demon's Souls. So many things came together so well in it... It's a great example of how to scare without having to handicap the player.

To think I nearly missed this after playing that abysmal demo... Can't wait for the second :D

I finally got back to this after many months of owning it. What is a good progression for buying/upgrading? I upgraded the basic plasma weapon twice and bought an assault rifle or something. I'm also getting low on health kits from getting man handled. I also can't play for too long in one sitting, too stressful.

this game is stressing me out.. (in a good way) i can only play it 1 chapter a day lol. but its amazing.. playing it at night, lights off, with my tritton ax pro..

I'd say concentrate on stasis, your armor and whatever weapon you favor in more or less equal amounts.

I think it was just EARS/Visceral just falling victim to the standard American horror movie shock ending. I wouldn't read too much into it.

The plasma cutter and stasis are probably your best bets. I would suggest using the line gun and force gun over the pulse rifle, but anything works*.

Upgrading the health on the suit is also important if you're getting hit a lot, but you should still sell whatever large med kits you get, seeing as they're worth 5 grand. You should also sell your stasis packs. Use the money to buy nodes.

The most important thing is to buy the new suits whenever they become available.

*Except the flamethrower, fuck that thing.

I just realized you guy are talking about using stasis in combat, I have been using it for doors mostly. So that is the secret, slow down time on the mobs to line up shots and stop getting hit.

I also keep running out of inventory space. I also noticed that you have to spend nodes to move forward with no upgrade on the node map thing. What a waste.

Buying the better suits will increase your inventory space.

I've also started playing it again after about a year of neglecting it (not sure why). I forgot this game looked so good! I htink I'm gonna play DP Extraction after I finish this, that's also been in my backlog for way too long.

Just finished this game, loved it.

Wasn't so much scary as tense, which is a better thing to go for IMO. You can only make the non-moving bodies jump up so much, thank god.

Definitely one of my favorite games this gen.

Started the New Game + just to see that new suit, badfuckingass! I'll replay this just before DS2 comes out.

I don't game much anymore and was to reignite my passion for gaming. Instead of purchasing new games, I thought I'd go through existing games I've yet to finish or even start. Dead Space falls into the latter, it's one of many games I had yet to open :lol

Started it last night and I'm about 1:30-2 hours into the game. The game is pretty damn awesome thus far, I'll probably have to find another game to play during the day because I'd much rather play Dead Space at night.

What's the smartest way to play through the first time? Should I just stick to the plasma cutter and upgrade that and the rig? Then do other weapons on the next playthrough?

I have this feeling I'm being dumb with my credits/nodes... are they very limited? Does it take multiple games+ to upgrade all weapons and armor?

I stuck with the Plasma Cutter the whole time. I wanted the Achievement and it definitely added to the tension of the game. :lol

Did you have a bunch of credits and nodes left over at the end?

That was my thought as well. I don't think it had any significance. At least, not when they first thought of it.

and that was Nicole, was it not?

The Plasma Cutter is the best all-around weapon and you can't really go wrong with it; that said, some enemies are better dispatched with one of the other weapons so I'd recommend keeping at least one other around for specific enemy types. The Line Gun for example is great for Lurkers (baby-heads with 3 tentacles) and any standing enemy (cuts off both legs at once). The Flamethrower is good for the swarms of little spiders. The Force Gun is good for Dividers and generally knocking back any enemy that gets close. The Contact Beam is good for bosses and brutes.

There are more than enough nodes to open all the locked doors, and there's always enough loot inside to make it worth it. Credits really shouldn't be a problem, just make sure you keep enough ammo and health (you shouldn't ever need to use an air can). Don't get every weapon, just get 2-4 and focus on upgrading them. You should get all 5 suit levels when they show up though (the 6th is unlocked in New Game+).

This time of year I always get the survival horror itch, and while a run through RE:Remake will undoubtedly happen over Halloween weekend, I decided to start early and take a crack at the final Achievement I have left in Dead Space, a run through on Impossible. I only just started, but it's a bitch. And I love it for that. :D

I have nothing else to add. Awesome game. If you've never played it, get into it now!

I'm currently playing the PC version and the fucking 360 controller is really slow on the turret stage where you have to shoot the asteroids. Though the controller works fine on the rest of the game free roaming etc etc.

I have v-sync turned off in the options.

Why is this happening?

So, i bought it off STEAM yesterday, and today i started playing but, as soon as i started moving the character around, i realized the controls were dalayed.
Now, i've read somethig about it in the steam thread, but the thing is: i'm using a 360 controller, not a mouse, is the delay normal? Also, is not only on the aim, is pretty much on everythingthe left stick aswell.

One thing that bug me, is that it doesn't get the stick input, until i'm pushing it really far, so subtle movements are impossible.. this, and ofcourse the Delay.
I've tried to disable Vsync already, doesn't seems to do much, with the controller.

What's the deal?

this game was fun but MAN, they had every horror cliche in the book.

that fat guy is going to die as a approach him isnt he?

nicole is just an illusion isnt she?

this intact necro corpse isnt really dead is it?

this ship we're signalling for help isnt actually going to help us is it?

the backstabbing part was a surprise but i didnt even hear what she was talking about

also, this is one of those games where the main protagonist should really talk

fun and lengthy game though, easily worth $10

ya, same for me, just shoot the center and get what you can

Just got this game, and I'm loving it. I was wondering, should I play through my first time on hard? I'm an experienced gamer and I would love a nice challenge. Is it hard enough on medium, or should I switch? I'm about an hour in so I wouldn't mind changing.

Have the similarities between Dead Space and System Shock 2 already been covered in this thread? Because I've got a good long spoiler-filled list I can post, and I've probably missed a bunch of similarities that others can fill in, which would be cool. I'm wary of posting it because I've seen other discussions on this very topic get ugly. I don't know why, but some people think pointing these out is an affront to Dead Space's devs, which is nuts. Dead Space rules. It's one of my favorite games of all time. Being influenced by another game doesn't make it any weaker, and I don't understand the bristling. Besides, the influence is pretty damn clear, which makes deniers look ridiculous. Dead Space seems to be a spiritual re-imagining of System Shock 2. I can't provide links, but back when it was rumored EA was developing a sequel (System Shock 3), the team behind The Godfather was supposedly behind it. Later, Dead Space emerged. Who made it? The team behind the The Godfather.

I've never played System Shock, but I personally don't mind if you talk about that. I love Dead Space so much, but I'm aware and accepting of criticisms of it. And I don't mind discussing comparisons to other games.

That's the thing, it's not criticism. :lol I've seen the similarities pointed out, and people seem to take that as Dead Space bashing for whatever reason. Which it isn't! I seem to remember hearing that a handful of key people on Dead Space were also involved with System Shock 2. Again, I can't provide links, and I could be wrong about this. From an official standpoint, there's no real link between the two games, but it's clear there's a strong spiritual link. Think of the relationship between Xenosaga and Xenogears, if you're familiar with those. Maybe in this case the relationship isn't as strong as that, but it's there.

Anyway. This is my working list of similarities between Dead Space and System Shock 2. It's rough and probably unfinished. Massive spoilers for both.

The following are true of both games:

• the game is survival horror
• takes place on a large ship floating in space, far away from Earth
• ship is dark, atmospheric, trashed
• ship uses a tram system
• crew of the ship has mutated into monsters
• the mutation occurs after the ship picks something up from an alien planet
• something from Earth is responsible for the mutation's origin being on said planet
• groupthink controls the monsters (Hive Mind; The Many)
• you eventually fight and kill the origin of the groupthink
• the game makes use of audio/text logs
• through these logs, you follow progress of someone else trying to escape (engineer Temple and his significant other Elizabeth in DS; Tommy and Rebecca in SS2)
• ghosts/halluciations (Nicole in DS; everyone else in SS2)
• through a good chunk of the game, you get guidance/instructions/directions from a woman over your communicator
• there's a plot twist in which the woman who's been guiding you turns out to be an antagonist
• there's a twist in the ending cinematic, in which someone's love interest is transformed into an antagonist

• you explore these areas:
- medical wing
- atrium/hydroponics
- crew quarters
- engine area, where engine needs to be restarted
- rec area w/ basketball court (!)
- late in the game, you board an attached military ship, explore it, and return to your ship

• there's a mission involving finding and destroying mutant pods/eggs
• there's meat growing on the walls
• the protagonist can use powers to draw objects toward him, fire them off
• there's an inventory system
• there's an equipment upgrade system
• space marines are involved in some capacity
• the game is published by EA, who still owns the rights to the System Shock franchise

I ended on some weak ones, but I think they're all valid, and I'm just trying to be thorough.

For the record, Dead Space is my favorite of the two. Eagerly awaiting DS2.

I think a lot of those are sort of generic alien-infestation-on-space-station tropes, not specific to SS2, but I noticed a lot of those myself (especially exploring different decks, each with a different purpose for running the station).

Hey, if it's the closest we get to SS3 I'll take it.

In a perfect world, John Riccitiello would hand over the System Shock IP to Ken Levine, personally, complete with a bow.

Yep, Hard is pretty good for your first time through. Then go through it again on Impossible, and if you're interested in achievements, getting One Gun actually makes Impossible easier.

I agree. Almost all of those similarities are simply sci-fi clichés that existed long before SS2... sure they may have drawn inspiration from SS2 but also from any one of a bazillion other sources.

Yup. I agree a bunch of them are generic. I didn't limit the list to the strongest and most obvious similarities. I was going for volume and trying to be thorough.

I think these are the strongest links, though:

• the mutation occurs after the ship picks something up from an alien planet
• something from Earth is responsible for the mutation's origin being on said planet
• groupthink controls the monsters (Hive Mind; The Many)
• you eventually fight and kill the origin of the groupthink

- rec area w/ basketball court (!)
- late in the game, you board an attached military ship, explore it, and return to your ship

• there's meat growing on the walls

I'd be curious to know what other games these appear in. Yes, Bioshock has a bunch, but that's because a) it's from Ken Levine, and b) he pretty much stated outright that it was a spiritual sequel to SS2.

Also, obviously you can pick and choose a small chunk of individual items in that longer list and point to other games that include them, but ... all of them? Honestly?

I'm definitely open to the possibility that I'm wrong, though.:D I'd love to know more about some of these tropes and their histories.
