So I bought the Evacuate Miracle but can't use it, she just waves it like I'm out of MP, what stats do I need for this to work? It seems I have everything?! And I don't think I was being invaded, it doesn't work in any level ._.

Do you have a Talisman of God equipped when you're casting it?

Finished my third playthrough last night. I played in body form much more often in this run-through and took advantage of the many blue and black phantoms that appeared. Players are getting so good now! Any boss that wound up getting tag teamed was no threat at all.

It's funny, when I started NG++ I wanted to finish up on some weapons and even off some ability scores but now that I'm done I really just want to go through it again! At the very least I'm going to fool around in phantom form, helping people out and such.

You probably need more MP. You can try wearing the Silver Coronet and using the Silver Catalyst, both increase your base MP.

he can't cast Evacuate with a Silver Catalyst...

anyway Evacuate costs 40 MP. Ensure you have enough (levelling Intelligence to raise max MP) and you're wielding a Talisman of God or a Talisman of Beasts.

I don't think so. A phantom can only grab what you put down. He can't steal any of the placed or dropped treasures.

Other players can't grab your stuff. So It's probably still in 5-2 or in your inventory. Another possibility is that you tried to pick it up while overburdened and it disappeared when you left the level. You could kill dreglings in 1-1 until it gets dropped. I've gotten quite a few that way without trying.

I started a new character yesterday for kicks, a Temple Knight. I was amazed how much stronger it was compared to the Thief, I think the beginning stats matched my Thief as it is now in terms of attack power!

I'm not crazy about the Halbert weapon, spears and long weapons really require lock on to work, and I find the game is often quite imprecise about when it wants to lock on or not. Still it's nice to be able to take a couple of hits and not worry about running off to heal. I do miss the quick roll though.

I find that Halberd works much better two-handed. It's faster and still has good range. The two-handed R2 spin attack has hyper armor that you can use to take out a group of enemies. Add turpentine to the mix, and the spin attack will cut through phalanx and his little pals like a hot knife through butter.

You can quick roll if you unequip your shield, helmet, and body armor.

He can get more MP by having a Silver Catalyst in one hand.

I was defiantly over burdened when I first tried to grab it, does that enable another player to grab it...? its not in 5-2 or my inventory! oh well, meat cleaver it is then!
anyone have an extra broken sword on us server ? :(

I think that might be the case. What's your soul level? I might have one, but I wont be able to check until tonight.

Yes if you try to pick it up but you can't carry it, it will drop on the ground and anyone can pick it up. I have extras but I'm SL120.

Yeah, if you grab something and drop it, it is available for anyone else, blue or red, to grab it. This can work to your benefit as you can spring 'menu item' traps on people :D

I think I might have one but I won't be able to check until tonight. Its almost easier to go and kill dredgelings in world 1-any level, they drop them like its christmas for me.

ugh, ya looks like the other dude got it. I'm SL 55ish, might be a little higher. PSN: NarcissisticJay if any of you guys care to donate :)
having fun with the meat cleaver either way so :) thanks again for your responses to help me understand what happened.

Yeah I'm using the Silver Catalyst, need to get me one of the Talisman of God/Beasts, another challenge for today, can't say that this game gets boring.

I also freed Freke and killed that guy in the church due to the messages in front :D

When I have my shield on the back, does it protect more against backstabbing or does it have any use at all?

I need Hardstones. :( I knew I shouldn't have killed the 2-1 vendor so early on.

Anyone interested in some trading? :p My new girl's L65ish.

Since I'm hyped for Dark Souls I started a new game a few weeks ago and am almost to the end of my 3rd playthrough. When I first bought the game at launch my first character was well-rounded, but this time I decided to be a Magic specialist (always wanted to do this in an RPG but never got around to it).

I'm at soul level 154 and Magic power 87. I always equip the Insanity catalyst, Ring of Magical Sharpness, and Kris Blade+5 for the magic damage bonuses. Off hand I use Rune Shield+5 for situations where I need to up my magic defense and a sword fully upgraded with darkmoonstones for the A-level magic attack bonus. I'm having even more fun this time plowing through the enemies with my spells, but my low magic defense did cause problems in 3-1 and 4-2.

Online is still a blast. I helped a guy kill the blue dragon (I can kill him really fast with Soul Ray) and he dropped 99 legendary souls as a reward. It's things like this that put this game entirely on another level.

How did you get him to drop those? By killing him fast? High luck?

I think I'm doing something wrong here, so if anyone has any advice or tips, I'd be grateful. My character is a Thief, SL64 - I've clocked 50 hours gameplay and whenever I invade as a BP I'm just getting slaughtered by my opponent in a couple of hits.

I don't know if this is a Thief thing, or my stats build is just trash, but I feel like it's pointless ever using multiplayer, and it takes so long to get the 23000+ and counting souls to spend them on another soul level, I must be doing something wrong? Right now I'm farming souls in 4-1 since the metal skeletons and flying stingray things give the most souls I think. I dunno I'm loving the game, but feels like there's a piece of the puzzle missing - I can play for hours and only go up 1 lvl, and all the weapons/armour are too heavy or require more skill, so I'm stuck with the stuff I had from 1-1. What am I doing wrong here guys?! :D

Well let us know what your stats are and what weapons and armor your using.

23,000 is nothing it takes me over 100000 to level up. Once you get to NG+ you will get a ton more souls.

EDIT: Also, you may very well be playing against seasoned players who are going back through the game in anticipation for Dark Souls or to brush up their skills. A lot of it though is being able to read the other player and see what weapons they are using and how to counter them.

Know your strengths and weaknesses. You want to be a sneaky thief; wear the thief's ring and use the cloak spell. Backstabbing is your attack of choice. If you go toe to toe, you're probably dead.

Also, 23000 souls is not that much :p I used 4-2 to level up. Just drop down and kill the reaper and then kill the skeleton in the hidden passage. If you've got the ring of avarice, you should get 11000 or so souls just from those two kills, and it takes you under a minute. Fire (Dragonstone) weapons help, or fire spells.

Actually, he should use the Graverobbers Ring instead of the Thief's Ring in PVP.

Have you been upgrading your basic weapons? Even a normal long sword +10 is plenty to beat the game with.

Stats and items? 50 hours honestly isn't much in terms of being able to get a good handle on multiplayer. If you're using starting weapons you are going to get slayed.

edit: yeah, in terms of beating the game, you really don't need to max out a weapon. I think my first time I used a +1 Crescent Falchion the entire game.

Stats for reference:

Sorry about the blur it was the best of half a dozen shots I took of the stats screen! It's just about readable, Magic is 16.

Equipment: Gloom Helmet, Wizard's Clothes, Old Ragged Gloves, Hard Leather Boots.

Main weapon is a Seimitar+8 and Silver Catalyst. Also use a Quality Winged Spear+4 when needed.

Luck stat... :/ Try using a BlueBlood Sword since you have so many points in luck (gets bonuses to physical and magic damage from the stat). Is that the Light Weapon spell? I can't tell. I would invest in that and forget about soul ray, since you aren't really a mage and it won't do much against a crowd of people. I am an advocate of area effect spells, so consider poison cloud (or acid if you're feeling nasty). Will keep people off you a bit and show otherwise hidden opponents.

None of your weapons are backstab-oriented so I wouldn't bother boosting your invisibility past what thief ring offers.

edit: oh yeah the STR stat is pretty low... go up 4-5 points and you can 2H most of the larger asian swords.

If I'm reading that correctly, your strength is at 10. That explains why you can't equip many weapons. The scimitar explains why you haven't had any success in pvp, since your opponents probably have Blessed/Moon/Dragon weapons that are maxed out.

Considering it looks like you have a really high dex. I would try using katanas. Since you have the HP regen ring that will give you away in any stealth.

If you are in 4-1 get the Magic Sword Makoto and make sure you use it with the HP regen ring. The sword steals your health but it is pretty powerful and the Regenerators Ring should compensate some.

I also noticied you do not have a shield. I would get some kind of shield. Considering your character and stats I would get the Dark Heater shield from 2-2.

EDIT: If you cannot roll take off any armor that prevents you from rolling.

Vitality and Endurance both seem low to me. Also Dex is your highest stat and I don't think a regular scimitar will make much use of that. Is the secret dagger also just upgraded using the basic path? The Baby's Nail might be a decent replacement and if you upgrade it with colourless demon's souls the plague it inflicts will be even more damaging. I'm not sure how much use a Quality wing spear is when your strength is comparatively so low. You should probably make a "sharp" weapon with bladestone or change your stats. 21 seems an odd point to have your intelligence. You get the three magic memory slots you're using at 18 so you're wasting three soul levels.
I think the black leather set is a good choice for lightweight armour. Gloom armour is among the heavier armours that reduce stamina regeneration and I think even just the helmet can make a difference.

And 4-2 is probably a better choice for farming souls than 4-1. You get more souls for killing enemies the further into a world you get and you can get a lot from the reaper at the start.

Also the friend's/foe's rings are really helpful as a soul in multiplayer so try to get them if you can.

EDIT I didn't even notice how high your luck is. You might just want to go for a Blueblood sword build.

Can you guys help me understand something about stealth and auras in this game? I was reading the Demon's Souls Wiki about how auras from weapons/spells/items break stealth. But lately I've been playing faith characters and I noticed that I don't see any aura when I'm using my Blessed weapons or Adjudicators Shield, even though the wiki says there should be and even includes pictures here:

http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/aura

If I equip the Regenerator's Ring I definitely see the aura, but the Blessed/Adjudicator's thing has me puzzled. Is it a glitch? Can other players see the aura but not me? Am I going crazy? :/

Absolutely tons of stuff to mull over here, thanks everyone. :)

I did notice my luck was high, I think early on I put a lot into luck because of the drop rate, thinking I'd get more herbs or something (thinking back to 1-1). I use the Thief Ring too, but switch it out for various others depending on situation, but usually keep the ring of Avarice on all the time.

I think I have every piece of equipment mentioned above, so it's a case of seeing which suits the best and experimenting.

I could not say for sure but I have seen some players look like a floating orb of light. I am not sure what they have but I assume they think they are hidden.

You may not be able to see it but if you try to cloak other players may still be able to see where you are. I think some it may even be as little as just a health bar.

The aura from blessed/adjucator is there, but it is pretty faint since your body covers most of the area. Other people will definitely see it though. To me the real use of the thief ring for non-backstabbers is that it obscures your equipment/etc.

And Red Licorice, just go with the BBS. Coupled with Light Weapon and a good area effect spell you'll be pretty tough to kill.

Thanks guys, and that's a good point about obscuring equipment. I didn't want to make the mistake of assuming I was hidden even though I wasn't.

Yeah I run around in hypermode and that is basically a giant neon light of an aura. That said, using the thief ring lets me shoot arrows at people who just stand there waiting for me to approach :p
