i know this isn't a response to me but i'd like to weigh in with my thoughts. Pretty much every map in Destiny is shotgun range, especially when you factor in sprint, overshields and blink. The long lines of sight you have to stop players before they get close are often cluttered as well. Here's how the maps play in Rumble:
Exodus Blue - largely focused around the buildings where there's little height variation. too many corners and angles; shotguns everywhere.
Asylum - only 3 major lanes on the map. otherwise overwhelmingly CQB. you have to be really good to kill shotgun players before they get to you
Burning Shrine - you win if you can snipe. Otherwise, shotguns galore.
Anomaly - best place to be if you want to avoid shotguns is the heavy ammo cave. Every other chokepoint is shotgun territory
Twilight Gap - absolutely terrible, cluttered sightlines and swiss-chees building design. Most engagements are in CQB
Blind Watch - shotguns. behind automatic doors no less.
Rusted Lands - all the major chokepoints and heavy ammo spawns are in CQB
Firebase Delphi - shotguns galore in the central rings, which hold the best sightlines on the map
Shores of Time - the only map not dominated by shotgun fights
Supers on CQB maps bred necessity for shotguns. shotguns bred necessity for ARs. the game backed itself into this corner.
Everyone uses ARs because they have the fastest kill time. You can kill 3 people with one mag of the Shingen-E in just under a few seconds. If scout rifles had the fastest kill time, people would use that.
Warlock and Titan have OHK grenades. Bladedancer also has OHK grenade
Am pretty good at the game, which is why it's frustrating how easy it is to blink + camo shotgun, or throw down a shield and create even more shotgun chokepoints. "playing the game as it is" at this point means abusing the shotguns. destiny's meta game has peaked at that. there isn't even a point in melee combat right now because shotguns have rendered it obsolete.
my win percentage speaks for itself - i consistently average ~24 kills and ~4 deaths a game sniping on every map and usually end up with nothing to show for it - not even an in-game rank. Meanwhile, the players shotgunning everywhere are earning legendaries and exotics when they lose.
everything is backwards
blink + fusion rifles is the real OP imo but cool, i'd much rather talk pvp than see another 30 pages of farming talk
I don't think the ARs have the fastest kill time. I think ARs have the fastest 'messy' kill time. You can spray and pray to an extent with them. You can be off center and still keep your damage up a bit. They're nice and they give a lot of people that sense of security. That's really about it.
When it comes to kill time, hand cannons
easily win the debate. They are without question the hand of God in this game. The only reason I'd even give ARs a notch over SR is because they can be used a bit better while mid-air, but even then people neglect the Pulse Rifles where they hit harder and maintain similar spread in the situation.
So basically.... I just think ARs are 'popular' more than anything else. If more people could actually aim, they'd use the weapons with the scud missile crits. They can't though. ARs are an entry level weapon that everyone who's ever played and FPS is familiar with. They're comfortable and effective. If you want to reduce the efficiency of that then you're getting into a messy area imo.
I won't say that shotguns have rendered anything obsolete either. If you're getting shotgunned then obviously someone is looking straight at you and extremely close to you - don't put yourself in that situation. You wouldn't sit on top of hill standing still while snipers are out, why would you round corners tightly and on the ground? Why would you ever sit in front of an automatic door? A simple jump laughs at the shotguns range and makes it largely ineffective - and because their rate of fire isn't all that great you've usually got your free kill before you hit the ground. The rooms aren't anywhere near as bad as Ghost either so its extremely obvious where people are coming from. Even moreso in Control and Salvage games.
I'm thinking a lot of people simply put themselves in bad positions because they can't get out of the mindset of other games.
