Destiny review copies being sent out one day before release, impacting review dates

Others have suggested that like fireteams, the option should be friends only at first, who's campaigning for automatic proximity chat?

The way people are going about it is implying that there should be either

a) no way out of it, or;
b) make it so that it is on the players to opt-out, the reasoning being that if it is opt-in, noone will use it, making it useless.

Alright well now you're just making assumptions based off of nothing, what precedent do we have that players would automatically just not use the option to hear other players to the point that no one would use it? There's no downside to including the option, that's the keyword here, option, so players who don't want to won't and players who do want to can and everybody is happy. It's not like there will be a group of players who actively dislike anyone using in-game chat. I would not even be surprised if they decide to patch it in later based on player feedback.

My problem isn't with Destiny. My problem is with people who seem intent on buying this game because they've "already played it". They're operating under the assumption that a beta will always be true to the final product, and there's no point in reviews after playing that beta.

You have a problem with people wanting to buy a game they played at length because they liked it?

I enjoyed the beta but the PvE was very limited and got old pretty quick (and I didn't enjoy the PvP so that's not a selling point).

Like others have already mentioned I was looking forward to seeing reviews and user generated impressions as to the length, breadth and replayability of PvE content in order to make a purchase decision. I was never going to be a day one purchaser anyway but I guess that decision will just be delayed a little more now.

I put in 20+ hours in the Alpha, 40+ hours in the Beta

I'm in HYPER mode for the game to release so I can drop 300+ hours

The game was a buy but with caution but the Alpha and Beta made me understand the scope Bungie is going for and I'll ride this rocket ship with them till the end or wherever it blows up due to circumstances from the universe

Pretty much this. I loved the Alpha and Beta, but I'll wait and see how much content the final game actually has before making a purchase decision.

Just want to state that the title is kinda wrong since Activision is NOT sending the game a day before release to reviewers. I can confirm that we're getting our review copies by Friday this week. But the servers themselves won't be online until September 9, so there's no way to play the game, though.

We'll be rolling out coverage on release day itself (not the actual review, though) and possibly all throughout the week until a proper review is deemed fit to publish.

If you've played the alpha and beta, you pretty much have a firm grasp of what to expect anyway.

Bungie/Activision want reviewers to play the game as it is meant to be played:

Meanwhile on the internet, because no early reviews:

I think it's kind of silly to be outraged here. While I know some reviewers are going to rush out a review anyway, I'd rather they release it after experiencing the game under launch conditions, rather than some ideal pre launch community.

No, no sir, NOPE, the beta was bullshots and you can't trust the dev, they just wanted you to like the game as much as possible, the rest of the game will be mediocre and you can't trust your own opinions, only rely on outside opinions, except for the ones that also enjoyed the game as much as you, cause they're falling for bullshots as well.

Wrong. You can only rely on print reviews from gaming journalists getting paid to write them, silly. But you're right - relying on how much fun you had with the beta is faulty logic since the retail game is going to be the equivalent of Superman 64.

Will you have a review of the case and disc art by launch?

Hey look a reasonable opinion!
So it is unreasonable to want the game based on what we played in the alpha/beta? Because I know I put over 20 hours into those, and that was with only one (two, for one day) area. The game will be worth a purchase, for me, even if it's only the beta x 4 (which is not likely, since there's an endgame).

This thread is getting toxic. I don't necessarily hold Mushroomer's opinion, but I think it is reasonable to be a skeptic. Some of the replies to Mushroomer border on harassment, it's just his/her opinion people, not an attack towards positivity...

Eh, I have do e enough research on my own to know what I like. I really enjoyed the alpha and beta, so I'll be picking this up day one

Reviews just can't be trusted for long-haul, multiplayer-heavy games anyway. Reviewers never get enough time with the game, among other issues.

Case in point: Remember how the reviews praised Halo 4's multiplayer like it was the best thing ever? I can't even blame them, since if you play the game for a short amount of time with a small player-pool of journalists and developers, you're just going to be exposed to something very polished with slick, responsive gunplay. You actually had to play the game for awhile to realize how vapid and hollow it was compared to previous entries.

I'm getting a PS4 for Destiny and any new games that come out that are interesting to me. I loved the beta. The Crucible was awesome.

but the beta is only the cobbled together best parts of the game
you can't trust that, for all you know the rest of he game is just fetch quests

/s
I must even be more riskey because I bought the digital guardian edition. So if its just shit I'm out of 90 bucks. I love games like that though.

I'm imagining that this is due to several factors:

1) Servers ain't gonna be up.
2) SP and MP are both using the servers, and as such cannot be separated.
3) Ain't gonna put servers up early because, wow. Have you ever heard MMO players bitch about people getting an early start before? Imagine that but even worse because this was an early start that they couldn't buy into.
4) The game is going to bomb horribly and Bungie and Activision are aware of this and are waiting until the LAST MOMENT POSSIBLE TO PULL THE WOOL OVER OUR EYES.

This doesn't change my purchasing decision one bit. Played the Beta, had a taste. Pretty bland. No thanks.

I am sure it will get decent reviews though. Too much hype and people like clones of other titles.

Why would Bungie do this? Hmmm...

There is absolutely no way these reviewers can put out an honest score in a day. So these reviews are more like early access sneak peek and useless. Not that I care for sites reviews on games as it doesn't stop me from buying a game that seems interesting to me. Still I don't expect them to be complete because there's just no way it can be. So the scores one way or the other are completely useless.

Oh it's reasonable to be alittle skeptical, it is not however reasonable to claim that we should be skeptical because the beta was most likely bullshots and no one should trust their own opinion, only outside ones, except for the opinions of people who share a positive opinion. That's where teh line gets drawn between skeptical and tin-foil hat territory.

I hate this with a passion. Yeah, gaming journalism is far from the greatest, but they still serve a purpose, and I hate publishers trying to get all the day 1 sales they can from people who can't wait to see if games are actually good or not. ugh.

I really don't think that's the case here though. More likely they don't want to throw the server switch on too early for a small handful of people that, because of this, won't be able to get a good sense of the final product anyways.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's been the same for other online only titles.

I would rather they do this instead of what EA did with BF4. Im getting it day one, since bungie knows their shit and activision hasnt really had any major launch issues with cod. It's pretty safe to assume launch is going to be fine. If you want to wait for reviews then go ahead and do that.

Their explanation actually makes a lot of sense - too bad people go into auto-flipout mode about things like this.

Not sure why they would wait so long to hand out review copies when my local GameStop had copies for X1 and PS4 when I walked in today, the teller tried to hide the copies from me before I could see them.

They don't have to rely on reviews for something that's probably tracking to sell huge already. Plus, not sending out early copies isn't nearly as much of a bad sign as it is when movie distributors don't screen a film ahead of time.

My gut feeling is that this game is going to be much lighter on content than expected, with the bulk of it being held over as DLC. I think I'll wait a few days and see how this pans out.

Bungie's official explanation is all over this thread- It has nothing to do with "handing out copies." They want reviews to be based on the game when it's fully populated by thousands upon thousands of players... not a just pitiful handful of reviewers dicking around.

Unless you're IGN apparently?

Edit: Servers don't turn on until Monday anyways. Will be a nice paperweight until then.

And that mentality is the problem. You're more trusting of promotional material than impartial criticism.

So just to be clear here, you are arguing that your own impression of a game demo/beta isn't as reliable as words posted online from some person who calls themselves a "games journalist?" HAH! Yea no.

First of all no matter how much you parrot this idea of "impartial criticism" does not make it true. We all know the vast majority of "criticism" in games media is plagued by favoritism, bias or even paid sponsorship *GASP*

Now this is not to say that all games journalists are unreliable. But, at the end if the day, they are not you. So, they can never truly speak for you. Your own impressions and reactions from playing the game are infinitely more reliable when considering your enjoyment of said game than the quotes on the box or the reviews posted online.

In the absence of personal experience the impressions of a third party do indeed hold some value but with many already getting so much exposure to the game and it's gameplay in the beta it's simply a non factor for most of us. Their scores do not magically change the amount of fun I or many others had playing the game.

hmm is the clan stuff working again on the bungie website??

a couple of tweets seem to think its been switched back on.
