But it's really cool items. Seriously, those are some lovely exotics.

But yeah, there's nothing about him or the events that would make this a 75 metacritic to an 85. The Raid will be cool, but it's just one part of the game.

Edit: Destiny as a franchise should be fine. I like what they are trying to go for, and there's a ton of potential to that.

They are neat, but like...not seeing him is not going to change a single thing about review opinions. It's a really weird thing to mention to me, lol. He's just another vendor

Don't charge $60 and more for 'just getting started' then.

Plus we were already told the beta was "just getting started".

watching that metacritic score spiral into the toilet. Feel kinda bad for Bungie. Wondering how they're going to dig themselves out of this mess. Hopefully by making this game better.

GAFs hardcore gamer scoring and critique nonwithstanding, I'm pretty surprised how well its being received. Out of a friends list of 120 people, 60 were online this wends and 50 playing the game. Everyone I joined or talked to loves it sans two of my friends.

Usually there's 10-15 people on mid week on my list period.

One thing that's a head scratcher to me is comparingthis somewhat mediocre shooter to others like Titanfall, where content was also light. The "press" full court pressed the Titanfall hype pre release, post release, and in most of their reviews. No one bought it (in comparison to the astronomical hype) and the general consensus was a resounding "meh".

Meanwhile Destiny is getting average reviews by the "press" but seems to be resonating with everyone outside our enclave.

I think the climate has soured towards overhyped games, largely thanks to Titanfall and also Watch Dogs earlier this year. Destiny deserves what it's getting, and maybe it's the worst offender, but I'm thinking the press is finally taking a stand against this shit.
Now that the advertisement dollars are drying up anyway.

Yeah, it has, but I haven't bought anything Nintendo related in over a decade. Typically, the games just don't appeal to me. I may have to change that soon.

Do you like having fun? Well then let me tell you that Mario Kart 8 is the real goddamned deal. There are a lot of other great games on there as people have mentioned as well (W101, DKCR:TF, Super Mario 3D World) and the upcoming games look excellent too.

Nintendo is definitely a company that rarely overhypes the way we're seeing here with Destiny, but I'm worried that they might have already over-promised with this upcoming Zelda.

vs. walking vending machines, and some dude whose name is "the queen's brother".

The NPCs in the tower are so lifeless. They only exist to give you items and have the occasional line of dialogue. There's what, 3 characters outside the NPCs in the Tower that actually have anything to do with the story?

Is it wrong that I don't trust Polygon's review because Arthur Gies was acting like a put out little baby for having to wait until release to play the game?

<edit>That being said, I don't necessarily agree or disagree with the review itself... I've yet to play the retail version.

I dunno, Destiny's final boss fight is pretty offensive.
lol, seriously?

I just got to Mars. Is the end game (post 20) any different? Anything to keep you coming back? Different color armors to play the same stuff probably isn't enough for me to stick around.

I'm also beginning to actively dislike the PvP. It's nowhere near balanced.

Hey, can i tell you guys a story?

Level 21 Titan here, please read. I'm Brazilian so sorry for any spelling mistake.

...

Back to my story: After spent many many many (so many) hours on Destiny, i found an LEGENDARY item. Wich item is that? An Hunter's arm. Hunter. After so much time, the game gives me and Hunter's Legendary item. Why?

Why would the game give me a Hunter's Legendary Item? Why? I can't trade it, sell it or anything as of now. It felt like a slap in my face. I though: "is that why i've played dozens hours of this game?". To get an item that's not of my class?

This is utterly brutal, and a pointless oversight in the game design.

Echoes my feelings perfectly, especially complaints about the endgame.

I think one thing people fail to realize also is that hype doesn't make a game good. There was a ton of hype coming into Destiny because it was the makers of Halo. But anyone who played the beta knows it wasn't going to be better than that. I remember the Halo beta's being mindblowingly fun. There's something dry about the Destiny world. Hard to put my finger on it. I think it's the fact that you just have your robot friend and you do the same thing over and over. They need more characters in the world. Actually, I think that's it. Your a guardian running around bases filled with enemies but there are no friendly ai and no set pieces per level. Just go and kill this thing. Destiny is like the Mass Effect planet missions from the first game that rarely had any character interaction.

Here's how you make Destiny more enjoyable. Make each mission unique and add some characters to meet a long the way or at least different things to do than just blast everything. Or at least add some unique bosses per level. Then add cool set piece moments in each level.

I still can't believe they stuck so closely to the Halo/FPS formula and completely ignored Spaceship Combat.

It was RIGHT THERE in front of them and they chose to just completely bypass that option.

Think about it:

**How awesome would it have been to not only have what Destiny has now, but also team-based Spaceship Strike Missions and Raids? Or Spaceship PvP? We'd not only be gathering loot for our Guardians, but also upgrades for our Spaceships.

Bungie missed out on a whole other dimension of gameplay they could have added to the game and instead made Space Ships nothing but Loading Screen Eye Candy/Cosmetic Pre-Order Bonuses.

I'll never understand it. Golden opportunity lost.

Reviews should be for the 60 dollar product that launches, not whatever the game becomes after a bunch of extra paid content and updates, sorry, but this isn't an MMO and won't be reviewed like one.

I didn't buy Destiny and don't plan to, but it drives me nuts that critics are reviewing a game like this so early. First week reviews of online games like Diablo or MMOs are ridiculous regardless if they're full of praise or scorn. Then you watch the video reviews and you see they reviewer isn't even tackling end game content, but discussing it as if they're experts (Gamespot's Diablo 3 and RoS reviews come to mind). I'm sure they read threads on forums like this and just rephrase what they read.

Except Destiny doesn't have nearly the amount of content or longevity or diversity of any of the games you mentioned.

A fair amount of reviewers, including Polygon, have said they plan to play the coming events and will consider updating their reviews and scores if warranted.

Bungie's campaign to delay reviews for its nearly-week-old, big-budget event release has looked and continues to look desperate.

From the outside, yeah it does. My copy should be in the mail today, so I haven't played much yet, but I loved what I played in the Beta. It seems Destiny is a good game, so I suppose I can't fault them for believing in it, it really is tough to judge a game before you really see what it entirely has to offer.

I'm curious to see how people feel about Destiny 3-6 months from now, once they've had a lot of time with the PVP and the expanions come out. It's possible the overall picture will be more positive once things settle in and hype dies down, if not...I hope Destiny 2 delivers.

Lol fucking christ. We'll it's a shame i bought Destiny thinking it would ship as you touted as a massive shooter the likes non have seen with story and mythology equal to such epics as Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Lord of the RIngs! Turn on your stuff now. And are new planets and areas to explore going to magically appear? ! If so i'm super pumped!

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more of a meltdown on GAF about how unexceptional Destiny is. Maybe the OT is just moving too fast for me to notice.

I've read a lot of this thread and it seems that there are some pretty bad things about the game such as the AI, story and mission variety. I just read Polygons review and it says there are only 4 mp maps and 3 modes? People complained about lack of content in Titanfall but Destiny seems to just have the bare bones.

The 16 maps that Titanfall shipped with were of the utmost quality, too. Only a dud or two, but most of them are fucking exceptional and built perfectly with the wallrunning mechanics in mind. Respawn has some insane talent, especially in the map making department.

Destiny's PvP maps (however many it may have) are... plain, I guess. Boring, pedestrian, whatever. Not interesting.

And they all show up in two cutscenes each. And none of them have actual names.

Blind Watch on control is one of the most offensively bad maps I have played in a shooter.

Destiny seems confused, or much like the basic framework to be built upon for sequels.

Destiny exists in this weird, nebulous realm in between an FPS and an MMO, but doesn't excel in any particular direction and just kind of falls flat in almost every direction.
I was going to write how I felt about destiny but you did it for me. It just feels like a game that doesn't try to be anything special. So many poor design choices too (my favorite being the lack of random areas leading to me running through the same caves over and over again).

Average consensus?? It's split right down the middle as a consensus here.
Not based on the current GAF census.

Some people are just more forthright in their opinion than others.

Hell, anecdotal it may be, but I know me and all my friends and cousins etc are greatly enjoying it, including the GAFers and other forum members I'm playing the game with online. I've yet to personally play online with someone who is disliking it, though I appreciate that doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. Granted opinions on PvP have been more lukewarm.

Somewhat random Q: For owners of both, which do you like better... Destiny or Borderlands 2?

I thought the gunplay in Borderlands 2 was atrocious, so I couldn't play much of it.

I'm in the minority here, though, I'm well aware.

The Co-op of Destiny feels very, very basic in fact. Gears of War did it better (and did the set pieces and spawns better too).

I think its the same as Halo 3's co-op. Its just that Destiny has special co-op driven missions and Halo 3 didn't. Halo had better set pieces though.

Halo 3, as a co-op shooter, is waaaaaaaay better. The enemy AI is far better and the encounter design comparison would just be hilarious.

Regarding that tweet, he says before their first events go live. Why in the hell would you not have a launch event? That just seems silly.

Our review's just gone live. 8/10:

Destiny PS4 Review

Destiny's budget was out of this world, and it's there for all to see in the finished product. Bungie's smash hit isn't the gameplay revolution that some wanted, but its accessible RPG systems, sublime gunplay, and incredible presentation over all aspects of the release elevate it beyond some of the very best shooters on the market. And although its flaws keep it from becoming legend, group together with friends, and you'll partake in an intergalactic experience that's a beacon of light in an increasingly darkening genre.

I think Bungie employees haven't realized how limited, small and featureless their game is.
Each of them only work on one piece of it, and a lot of it has to do with how those pieces are arranged. They've basically taken halo levels and stitched them together into a series of open worlds. The result is sections of that content get little use this time around.

Hey, can i tell you guys a story?

Level 21 Titan here, please read. I'm Brazilian so sorry for any spelling mistake.

I've just spend my last 3 full days playing Destiny. Today i've played about 9 hours of Vanguard Strikes Playlist , Moon missions (with a friend) and stuff like that.
If you've spent 3 full days playing it I'd say you've got your money's worth. If you're not enjoying it, put it down, maybe come back later after patches/DLC/updates have possibly improved some of the things you don't like.

From the sounds of it, the game (at least right now) doesn't have enough content/variety to hold up for the people who have grinded their every waken moment since it was released, such as reviewers. The people who have been less obsessed by it and going through it slower seem to be more positive about it. That might not be entirely accurate but it's the impression I've gotten from the main thread. And I enjoyed my own 3-4 hours with it a lot, the PvP alone will eat up a lot of hours for me.

Actually the really negative reviewers have already finished the available content and leveled up. You shouldn't be able to finish an MMO in this amount of time, especially one that gives you no incentive to keep replaying the endgame. That is why they are so down on it. The really high reviews are from the people whom haven't.

They filled up the initial level bar. That's not the only leveling or loot system in the game.

Comparing the two just seems unfair. As a competitive shooter Titanfall obliterates Destiny.

I think the game deserves an 8/10. It has already been stated whats missing/wrong with the game. I am having a blast playing it with my friends though and will buy the sequel whenever it comes out, unless it's proven Bungie hasn't learned from their initial mistakes. I am also disappointed at how underwhelming all these new games have been (Watch Dogs, Infamous, Destiny).

God this is hard to watch.

Also if it takes 20+ hours of garbage content to get to the "real" game, then the game is garbage. Gamers don't owe it to the devs to waste 20 hours on unfun content for a potential promise of having fun. If you want the average consumer to get to the "real" part of the game, a good game would have the parts up to that point be fun as well.

Destiny. And I put 80+ into Bornerland 2.

Destiny just has much much better aesthetics and thus I'm way more invested in my the characs and leveling them up.

Also, the worlds are so much more staggeringly engrossing on an area-to-area basis. I could walk around in them forever. Bornerland 2 was just huuuuge endless deserts of a texture map.
