Destiny - Review Thread

Despite all of the negative impressions, I still find myself having a pretty damn good time whenever I log in.

Maybe I'm just weird.

I feel the same way. it's clear they focused on mechanics and environment/character design for this initial offering, which for me is enough to keep the game afloat. in a couple years we'll see whether that can really walk the talk and deepen the game via varied encounter design, more pronounced player interaction, and a meaningful story.

it would have been great if they coulda stuffed all that into this one title. but they're not omnipotent. now, if destiny 2 doesn't pick up the pace, then there's legitimate cause for concern.

This reviews are...well, strange to me. Seems like they're being shat out as soon as possible and the game was played with a focus on finishing the "story." It's like the antithesis of what Destiny is.

They've been playing since Monday.. there's been plenty of time to make a decision on the game.

Hell, you've made a decision on the game already.

If it was your job just to play Destiny, you easily could have put 40hrs into the game by now.. if you can't decide how the game is in that time.. then yeah.. I dunno.

Damn, Gamestop gave Destiny a 6, too? I never would have thought Destiny would get some review scores this low. I see the Metacritic is back up to 75, so that's good! I suppose these unexpected reviews and the amount of people who were disappointed with the game could be a good thing. Bungie is going to have to win some of us back, like myself, before I go and spend money on the expansion packs. So, free content updates like new strike missions and more raids are probably going to happen now, if they weren't already planned.

Do you really want to read those cards on the game?

Is way easier to just do it on a PC or a phone. That's one of their better decisions.

They could have been audio logs, simple fricking audio in the game with an image.
No need for a big celeb to read, just get a few competent interns.

Can't see it doing well at Gametrailers either watching this editorial, disappointing loot, feeling small, mediocre "MMO" and repetitive missions are some of the complaints, nothing new.

Well I actually already had 40 hours of playtime in the beta, and the retail ain't all that different.

Well I actually already had 40 hours of playtime in the beta, and the retail ain't all that different.

Then these reviewers probably had similar time with the beta too. And like you say, the retail game isn't much different.. so the reviews are likely fine then?

I'd expect a lot of 6-7 scores in its present form. Seems telling that Bungie went on the offensive about reviews before they even started being released.

I can't believe IGN U.S didn't get their review up yesterday. It kinda reeks of just waiting to take the temperature of everyone else, to see what you should give it.
Or waiting for the raid early next week to give the full picture of what you're buying into a fair shake, and see how it and the rollout of the few multiplayer modes this weekend turn out. We already have plenty of reviews of Destiny's current state to choose from.

I'm loving it.. played beta.. ordered the Guardian edition.. still loving it.. put about 20 to 25 hours into it and I'm still on the moon. played a ton of crucible and love that too. no idea about some of these complaints. I'm sure people dont like the titan slam thing.. i dont either.. but i bet people dont like when i use my arc blades and slice their asses up.... so i just take the game as it is... to me it sounds like bitching cause they suck. most fun I've had in multiplayer fps in years.

As much as that sounds like somethin said just to agitate, I actually never rule this out anymore, when people start trashing games. Anecdotally, I was playin Diablo the other day with some people I met online, and we started talkin' about Destiny. I mentioned that I love the game, from playing the beta, at which point I guess the guy just had to let me know how trash it was. He was goin' in on it, talkin' about how the crucible was weak pvp, etc. Literally in the next sentence said "Man I suck at the multiplayer though." I just laughed and let him have it.

I've also seen people (on another site) post a ps3/ps4 comparison video of the game, and then proceed to say that the current gen version is useless, because "omg are you kidding me, they look exactly the same, when's next gen getting here!!!"

So yea, in my personal experience, people have weird divisive opinions about this game.

Dude has made some fucking great films, don't get me wrong. The Thing is one of my all time faves, Big Trouble is a load of fun and Halloween is a classic. But he lost his touch by the time the 90's rolled around. It's for the best that he moved on to other things.

Yea, the last great film he made was In the Mouth of Madness. Probably the greatest horror film director ever. And he made some good bgrade action flicks.

Sure, they could've been that. But the effect isn't much different.

If you are interested in the lore there's plenty to read on the app/website and it's a pretty enjoyable way to do things.

You don't think the people at Bungie care how their game is being evaluated? I bet the majority in that studio care more about how people are or are not liking the game than how many copies they sold.

Of course they do think about that. It's this score which will tell customers if they will be buying or keeping the game on it's "10 years life span".

While true, there's something to be said about getting your story dump for what you achieved right then and there when you're experiencing things vs later over some tea. The way it's done now... I couldn't for the life of you tell you what's happened in the 10 or so missions I've done other than the darkness is coming, and just a couple things Dinklage said. In FF13, for all its flaws, the database was used to flesh out more what's happening and the meaning behind the words people say and background info on locations and characters. It still presented the majority in game.

I'm kind of on the fence on whether or not I should get this. Tempting to get it on ps3 for the free upgrade to ps4 (for when I eventually get one).

In another thread, I shared my early impressions of alpha/beta (impressions of video and of other peoples' impressions - derp).

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=122060578&postcount=145

Still reminds me a bit of the Diablo III open beta weekends.

They left everyone pumped and excited, and yet a large part of the fan base soured when they got to the end game.

I know that game had its issues related to loot drops being tied to the auction house, but it is a lesson that open beta periods are really more about testing the network and hyping up the fan base.

There still is so much about the game that we don't know anything about.

What is endgame like? Will strikes/pvp/and raids be enough (it at least has something, DIII only hade inferno and the AH).

Still lots to learn.

I don't say this to rain on the parade. I'm excited too, and am even thinking of getting a new console for this game. But there is still plenty left to see.

I've watched plenty of video and read plenty of impressions, but overall the game really hasn't tempted me yet. I do find the press' reaction to be interesting. I hadn't expected that. I wonder how Bungie staff are taking it. It must be great to finally have the game release and see all of these sales, but the reviews and reaction of some disappointed fans has to hurt.

Hopefully they will be able to improve upon what looks to be a solid foundation.

Personally, I think I might wait until its 40 bucks. Ironically, I'm spending most of my time playing diablo III 2.1 - its great.

If only the story in Destiny had pulled me in to make me want to spend the time reading all of those cards and learn about the lore...

Whatever people think about Destiny, the reviews and such...I guarantee Destiny 2 is gonna be f'n awesome. Bungie will redeem themselves.

Might want to save that nonsense for later. We're still too close to the "Destiny is going to be GAME OF THE FOREVER!!!" hype. Bungie no longer deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Well deserved. Glad that the big sites aren't falling for teh hype. The campaign is the worst I've played in a while.

that's like saying the story sucked and had holes in it for the star wars prequels so you should read the EU novels to fill in the blanks... sorry but if the story isn't in game there isn't one

How is having to leave your console to read about the game's lore enjoyable?

What's the point of having lore if I have to look it up on something like a wiki?

I do like the worlds and bungie aesthetics like the skyboxes.
I do hope they go current gen only with Destiny 2 and more like a good fps diablo clone.
A more in-depth rpg class builds, crafting and itemization make the
freaking mobs bosses/mini bosses drop the loot.
Please launch with like 8+- strikes.

It's actually kind of broken. Using any primary weapon except the auto rifle puts you at a huge disadvantage. Also, the game still has horrible balance due to some weapons having less recoil, more bullets, or a higher fire rate. They need to give everyone the exact same guns stats wise in pvp.

It's not imbalanced, just depends on how you play or what your skill set is. Eg whether you can weild something with a higher rate of fire and less stability or want something with greater impact and stability but with a lower rate of fire. Some people with shotguns sacrifice impact for range and so on.

Giving everyone the exact same gun is just silly imo and sort of defeats the whole point.

Also does everyone really use an AR? I'm getting killed by all sorts of weapons.

Yeah, that's true. But with the story they wrote it would be hard to do any info dump without it seeming excessive. I think it would be too much if the Ghost kept telling you all the lore while you were shooting enemies.

If only the story in Destiny had pulled me in to make me want to spend the time reading all of those cards and learn about the lore...

Well, the story isn't very good I agree. But the world is beautiful so knowing more about the lore doesn't have to depend on your enjoyment of the main narrative.

Good thing they didn't have bonuses tied to metacritic scores (assuming that part of the contract hasn't changed dramatically from a few years ago).

What? You can't be serious. Why not put the lore in the game that I'm actually playing? Have kiosks in the Tower that allow me to access my cards. Or better yet, put the lore on the many interminable load screens I have to sit through to do everything in the game.

If you don't think 75 is representative of the quality of the game, why?

it's metacritic. i would be wary of puttng stock in any aggregated score system when something like this:

Okay, so I haven’t gone over every aspect of this game, but you now know enough to make an informed decision. It’s easy for me to tell you to go buy it because I was sent the limited edition PS4 set. It didn’t cost me a dime. Having said that, I can assure you that had I needed to purchase this game, I would have purchased this game. It was worth it in the alpha, beta and the retail version. It was everything I thought it would be and a bit more. Again, it’s not a perfect game, but for me it is a perfect experience.

can give a total outlier score and nudge it a few points in either direction.

Well, its not bad just becuase its new and different. I'm just reading all the cards on the iPhone app and the lore is acutally quite interesting. Didn't even notice that the Fallen have different houses and don't acutally all work together.

I can't take some of these reviews seriously especially since this should have been the score for Titanfall for me. Like I find the game to be excellent especially in presentation. It's fun, hard, social, everything in one with a whole lot to do that a lot of games. I'm just bummed that they scored it so low but... Ugh.... Forget it.

Why would I want to read the cards on my TV?

Reading lore on my smartphone when I'm not playing the game is way more enjoyable. When I put on Destiny is to actually play it, not spend time reading tiny text on the TV.

Smartphones/PCs are way better tools to read stuff than a console.

Don't you mean assuming that it has changed dramatically?

"Activision shall pay to Licensor a quality bonus (the "Quality Bonus") in the amount of Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($2,500,000) should Destiny Game #1 achieve a rating of at least 90 as determined by gamerankings.com (or equivalent reputable services if gamerankings.com is no longer in sen/ice) as of thirty (30) days following the commercial release of Destiny Game #1 on Xbox 360."

I wouldn't really let it affect your perception of the game. I too am having an absolute blast with my friends. There are very clear areas that need upgrades, but the experience has been fun and yes the presentation for the most part is slick.

Of course I'm serious. Why does it matter if it's in the "game"?

Are you telling me you like doing heavy reading on your TV? Seriously?

Why does it matter if it's on the game or not? Downloading an app is too much work for you?

The app experience is great and it wouldn't be as slick if it was done on the game itself.

This is close to people saying "all you need to do is read the Halo books and comics to understand Halo 4". Keep the lore in the game, why would I want to be reading my phone when I'm on playing Destiny? Should have been in game audio logs.

I read every bit of Mass Effect's codex on my TV. Loved it too.

Well that's just ridiculous.

I don't know why its not in-game, or why there is no in-game worldmap. One of those odd omissions.

I find it fascinating that this game is being bagged for Story, yet Titanfall sits at 86 MC

The idea isn't to read on your phone while you're playing. The idea is to do when you are not playing since that info isn't needed to understand what's going on.

But if you have a few minutes to kill you can read some cards and get to know some extra info.

You don't need to read those to understand what's going on. It's extra stuff for those who want to know more. I never said you needed them so you're comparison with Halo 4 doesn't make sense.

I have a feeling that Destiny is going be just like Diablo 3 an incredibly polished game with fun mechanics that will fall short at launch due to the lack of content and various mistakes and things missing. BUT I think that like Diablo 3 because the formula on paper is awesome and because the company (Bungie like Blizzard) have a big experience and talent they are going to fix the game and with an expansion or a sequel its going to be something to look forward to. Think the launch is disappointing like Diablo 3 but in the future Destiny is going to be a really great game simply because the idea on paper is great what wasn't great is the execution.

So i finished the story yesterday with my buddies and they warned me about how bad it was. I thought there was no way it could be worse than the lead up. Boy was i wrong.

Is this seriously it? There's like nothing in the game! I really love the gameplay but holy shit come on bungie, where's the varied content. Everything just like meshed together cause how samey it was. There is no way in hell im gonna pick up the dlc packs if there isn't a change to the content.

I was so excited for this game...what a friggin let down.

Oh it won't. It became my regular go to shooter game since debut. I haven't played BF4 since and that's saying something. But to see it scored so lowly makes me boil a little. I'm usually not bummed on reviews because they don't affect my time with the game but for some reason, I'm not seeing it. All in all, it really shines in presentation and gameplay. It's fun to play 11/10 times versus all the games that have came out this gen and it kind of ticks me off. Of course my opinions are bias but this just makes no sense to me that a game with so much more, is getting docked points but a game like Titanfall that has bare shit has higher scores?.... I don't get it. I really don't.

I find it fascinating that this game is being bagged for Story, yet Titanfall sits at 86 MC

Exactly!! I just fucking can't. I really can't.

Its not the same. The app actuall feels tied to the game deeply. The is much more to be found in it than the lore.

What's the difference between reading on a TV, a monitor or a cellphone screen?

Putting the cards to be readable on the game is too much work for the devs? Literally every other game does that, even bloody Final Fantasy XIII had in-game lore, just make a menu or some NPC that lets you read that shit in-game and keep the app/website reading for people like you, only being able to read a game's lore outside of it is completely backwards.

Because destiny's in Gane story is awful and gives you such little info. I shouldn't have to go somewhere else to read something I just earned.
