Destiny - Review Thread

Still, I was having fun, until today I noticed doing strikes over and over, grinding away at ridiculous healthbars for better loot that you´re not going to get, is actually kinda boring.

That is what finally hit me last night. I was having a great time with the game, but the redundant mission structure, waves upon waves of enemies and bullet sponge bosses at the same time in strike missions just started to grate on me and it felt more like an unimaginative clusterfuck with horrible game design.

Too many people forget that on a 1-10 scale 6 isn't "bad". I personally think Destiny deserves a 6. I enjoy it for what it is and it will keep my attention for a little while but it's not anywhere near a 8-10 game.

This talk from GDC 2013 featured Joe Staten(former story lead who departed from Bungie late last year).

It gave the impression that Destiny was going to be FAR deeper storytelling-wise. To see the contrast between this vision and the final product is jarring, but I recommend you give it a watch.

I'm starting to suspect that Activision and the higher-ups at Bungie were limiting him from achieving something deeper story-wise. Mind you, Joe Staten had been at Bungie for over a decade. His enthusiasm in this talk doesn't match the quality of the released product.
I love hearing Staten talk. Thanks!

These reviews continue to blow my mind. Destiny was better than I expected, and my expectations were reasonably high.

There is def a difference in regard to that hiphopgamer tweet. I def do think people go into experiences with a critical eye instead of just trying to enjoy the experience. Kinda like a person bringing a list to a first date trying to find the one instead of just going with the flow.

I want a review that is critical of a game, any review that isn't critical is just PR fluff. Reviewing a game is nothing like going on a date.

Not really too surprised by the average review scores.

I'd have to play the game for myself but I watched a decent amount of YouTube videos of the beta and the game looked a little boring. Something about the world seemed so empty. Perhaps that is because it was beta but it's like there was "life" missing in the game and by that, I don't mean other players. I don't know, is this an issue people are having with the final game?

6/10 isn't bad, but people are fixated on the fact that this game had a lot of hype built around it. In that case, a 6 is basically viewed as a 3 or 4.

Honestly, I think Destiny is a 7/10 game right now. A lot of Destiny is built upon future updates and promises. Frankly, I think that now Bungie has finally released the framework/foundation for Destiny, they will be able to support it and make it into the game that everyone is waiting to see.

If Bungie were to incorporate everything they wanted into this game at release, they would need an additional 3-5 years of development, in my opinion.

Which part did you like best? Was it the part where you shot all those guys? Or was it the part where you shot all those guys while your Ghost hacked a thing?

Absolutely. Not to mention, you tend to revisit these same areas extremely frequently.

Man, Staten must be very disappointed with how the game turned out (story wise). Destiny is pretty much the complete opposite of what he's talking about. Just baffling.

Well, he left the team almost a year prior to release, so I don't know if he feels any connection to the result. Maybe he even feels slightly at fault for it.

Yeah okay, I can see that, that some people are bothered by the (lack of) context around what you do in Destiny. But it doesn't really bother me personally. That's how I would describe the criticisms levied at this game. I agree with most of them, but they don't bother me. I guess that's what happens when the core game mechanics feel great.

y2kev pls

You did make a thread praising Dead Space 3.

RE6 is a great game for some, I personally loved it, agree with the reviews written for it though.

Holy shit @ the reviews!

Still enjoying the heck out of Destiny, and won't let anyone else's opinion affect mine.

Good on you for enjoying it. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. I played both the alpha and beta and found the game terribly boring and repetitive. As a result I cancelled my preorder. However, being a big Bungie fan, I had hoped the real gameplay hook was hidden away somewhere only to blow away the masses at launch. Obviously that didn't happen and the reviews speak for themselves. I'm glad you got something positive out of it though.

Not surprising since this is the largest new IP launch of the year.

Hmmm you can argue watch dogs falls into that category. I think this one had more expectations and in turn is now more controversial because of the people working on this game and the new type of experience expected because in the end watch dogs is just another open world game where destiny was supposed to be something different for console players..

I'd honestly consider dropping the game a point or half a point due to the PvP alone. My goodness. lol. I think I might just stick with PvE...for the time that the game can hold my interest

I know! Multiple journalists were just recently killed in the Middle East! I hope you can get over their sacrifice for your ability to pump out multiple lines of being glad for him being glad about his happiness about games!

I guess it's worth spelling out that the concerns about amount of content are different from concerns about quality/variety of content (content =/= art), at the very least for me. If it was just a question of limited content that we knew would grow with time, it wouldn't be a concern for me.

Oh, man.
It was pretty fucking bad. The Simpsons had a joke like this in an early season, and Destiny's here playing that line for real.

This is the first true 2 out of 5 star mega-release I've played in a long time. I assume it's like Watch Dogs was for a lot of people. There's a brilliant game under all of the repetitiveness and non-story, but Bungie wasn't interested in finding it.

Watch_Dogs does fall into that category, but everyone's hype for the game had diminished quite a bit as the launch came about. Particularly the downgrade in graphics, the pc requirements, the resolutions for the consoles, etc.

Destiny was being heralded as the next step for first person shooters. With Bungie's expertise and renown, the hype did not diminish come launch.

The graphics in Watch Dogs was a straight up lie, and they really should suffer the same fate as Alien CM.

That the open terrain is potentially explorable.

People seem to forget the qualifiers made, but hey - anything to drive a narrative.

Nowhere in the video does he say that you'll be able to do that at launch.

He did appear to add the qualifier as you say, but considering the state the game released in, they're level of support for people who already bought the game pre paid DLC probably needs to be pretty substantial.

I see Destiny in a better light when I see it as something that's meant to evolve and grow substantially with time, but a good chunk of that early growth and evolution probably shouldn't be paid for. But that's just my opinion.

LOLspot is a joke of a site - The same site gave TLOU an 8 and Beyond 2 souls a 9

there is a reason the traffic for that site took a nose dive and its not just down to their backassward forum re-design.

Never ever take them seriously on anything ever

now that is just wrong, scores should be reversed

Really?

Saying something like "We hope to send you guys there someday" is purposefully vague and misleading, especially when you consider that demonstration of the game happening prior to the release of Destiny.

If there intention wasn't to mislead they would have said, simply "We hope to expand the game into those areas in the distance for post-launch DLC", not "All that stuff, if you ran out there, it's all playable terrain".

Nowhere does he say you won't be able to do that for launch. The implication is that you will be able to, but it is left purposefully vague to mislead.

"We hope. . ." doesn't sound particularly ambiguous to me. You can certainly argue that he used the line knowing full well that it wasn't going to be in the game anytime soon, but given the world building and commitment to future content, I'm landing on the optimist side of things.

I don't really see how those scores merit this strong of a reaction, though.

A good game is a good game. Being critical has nothing to do with your enjoyment of a game.

I went into binary domain expecting nothing, the first impressions in the first level were terrible (b tier gears clone first level).
Then as I got a little further in it turned out the AI was very good, the hit reactions are the best in any third person shooter , the encounters were super well designed, it had cool bosses and a really compelling story that is far far better than what you'd expect from a shooter.
Despite having poor mouse controls (which were a burden throughout the entire game) it was overall the best third person shooter I've played alongside vanquish and max payne 1-2.

The mouse controls still fucking sucked a bag of dicks though and shouldn't have made it past QA
I didn't have to pretend they were fine and stick my fingers in my ears to appreciate the things that game did better than other third person shooters before it.
The game is what it is.

If hiphop gamer stops enjoying his precious games if he looks at them critically then maybe it's because they're not that good afterall and he's in it for the hype instead of the gameplay.

He is just whinging that people can't criticise games because then they're apparently not real gamers. Having standards makes you not a real gamer.

Or saying "So all of this ('Older Russia' he jokingly calls it) is playable space, that we hope to one day get to send you to. It is all real geometry, you could go there, we could go there right now, but we have a schedule to keep"" and "All that stuff, if you ran out there, it's all playable terrain" might just be being intentionally misleading, when you don't go on to specify that you are talking about DLC possibilities.
