Destiny - The Taken King |OT| Time to Explain

So I can get the base game for next to $0, but is the vanilla game going to be worth playing without the xpacs? Ive heard they really chopped down the game for non-expac owners but will I get a good feel for if TTK will be worth my time with just the base game?

they completely crippled the original release. It's worth playing about 25 hours maybe but after that if you don't buy the expansion it's useless.

Because of how destiny has updated their game, people who own zero expansion packs still get the quality of life improvements.

This means a Vanilla only player will have access to stuff like the new questing structure of the game.

Also, Bungie makes PvP maps free to players from prior expansions free, so you'd have access to 18 Maps. (Note that players scale in PvP so a level 1 can kill a level 40 with little issue)

You could also download the demo for free and play up to level 8 or so to see if it looks like it'll be your thing. The demo is the full vanilla game with a level cap put on it.

So I am currently working on the exotic sword quest (arc) and wow is this frustrating. I gathered the 10 resources from the spinmetal nodes, which took forever, and now I am just working on my arc abilities kill portion of the quest. I don't suppose there is a good area to just grind this out?

To top that off, I am 100 reputation short of Rank 3 at the Gunsmith, so I can't pick up my quest for the Tlaloc until this coming armsday, and then I have to wait until the following armsday to pick up the gun once I have completed the actual quest line.

It's been a frustrating Destiny week lol.

I grinded for the fire sword flame ability kills on the mission The Dark Beyond (the "We've woken the hive" mission). Lots of minor enemies you can kill easily enough, then suicide and restart the checkpoint, just don't kill the boomer knight. Took me 30 minutes or so of it, not the worse grind I've ever done.

For the arc kills. It takes 3-5 PvE enemies to get a single percentage towards that.

However, a single arc pvp kill is worth 1% by itself.

Thus... get your ass into mayhem and start spamming your grenades/supers.

Siege of the Warmind for all your ability kills. When the wave of thralls are done, jump off the edge and restart the checkpoint.

Also throw on the gloves that grant you two melee and the perk that allows your melee to regen after getting melee'd by an enemy. I did it very quickly on my warlock.

I grinded it out in Cosmodrome while collecting the materials from spinmetals, took 2.5 hours to get the materials and the kills from random mobs and Taken. By the time I had 10 materials I had 80% of the kills done or so.

What?

The gun unlocks as soon as you do the scout rifle kills/break the scouts down. You don't have to wait a week at all.

You only have to wait to arms day for the exotic sword materials, first curse and the chaperone.

Finally did this week's nightfall last night. Rewards were either 290 exotics or 300+ legendaries. Ran it with two characters, good rewards all around, would do again.

Much improved loot, thanks Bungie!

I got 1 strange coin from one NF I ran, this was the second of the day though. The others got a 309 Ghost and 12 3oC respectively. It was the other way around the first time around though, me getting the Ghost.

Kind of ready for Destiny spinoffs at this point. Maybe a side scrolled or tactics game. Current formula is no longer fun.

I could go for a mobile game that allows you to grind for some minor items in Destiny proper (something akin to the match-3 Sony made to accompany Knack).

I've realized that I hit a progression wall with the game and can't get myself over the 295 light mark without running the higher level content. My problem is that I'm a 37 yr old gamer with 2 kids and not a ton of time to play. Hoping I can find some players in the same situation or someone willing to throw me a bone on the higher end content. Would love to find a consistent group for the Raid and Nightfall content.

If anyone wants to add me on PSN my tag is BigDawg1009.

Random chance from the gift bags.
Or dismantle existing legendary masks.

It's slow but you can progress without running the raids, just keep the 3oC up at all times and remember to be your highest light level when you visit the cryptarch.

I have heard good things about The 100, if you want to find a regular group with a similar schedule.

Just download the demo, I believe that will give you the base game without any of the expansions to at least give you an idea.

Don't forget to do the crucible/shaxx bounties. They give you nightfall quality rewards as well.

I ran Nightfall for the first time last night (Sunless Cell) and got a bumpin' 302 Hakke auto rifle, plus finishing that lingering Nightfall quest gave me a 300 shotgun (whatever the kids are raving about, Conspiracy-D or something to that effect, plus rangefinder). Took me from 295 light to 297 and I haven't even set foot in the raid yet.

I have to say that while some diehard players are feeling frustrated over the new endgame, I (as a guy who only has maybe 40-60 minutes a day to play) absolutely adore the new flow and setup of TTK. I make real progress, always have little things to chip away at, and am doing well with legendary marks since the daily is always pretty quick.

This has been my experience as well. My Hunter has mostly completed her quests (just a few steps linger that take others and / or time I don't have right now), but I've been enjoying the endgame. Part of it is the incremental progress of the light level, as I'm slowly infusing my collection upward. Part of it is expanding that collection via the Armsday orders and filling out the year 2 exotic collection (which is where my marks are currently going). But a big part of it is the quality of the new content; there's a lot more variety in the daily missions given the number, and I really like most of them (Blighted Coven, today's, is one of my favorites). The new strikes are very good and much more replayable than the year 1 mix. And there's been a pretty steady drum beat of new stuff being dropped in or activated each week or two, though I wonder if Bungie can keep up that pace.

I'm slowly working my Titan through the Taken War and while there are too many bounty steps - some of which seem to overlap - it's really a mountain of things to do. It's been enjoyable to just hop on for 30 minutes and call it good, having made progress on quests, gear or level somehow. All in all I feel like the endgame is a huge improvement over year 1.

I ran it yesterday and got a 310 Suros Exotic. Thank The Maker!

I got to 297 the hard way, no raids. You can add me if you want another poor dad to play with, scuzzlebutt33 on PSN.

I've never gotten a nightfall type crucible bounty reward, ever. Even the quests.

I'm not sure what you're saying, so I'll clarify.

There is a giant crucible quest chain that has like 50 something steps to it. It involves you playing every game types, winning some of those types, and even getting kills with specific weapon types.

After you complete this huge quest, you can start picking up bounties from Shaxx.

Shaxx has 6 bounties every week.
5 of them are random PvP bounties that are a half step up in difficulties from regular PvP bounties.

The 6th one is literally a bounty to complete 5 Shaxx bounties in 1 week. Turning in this quest gives you a reward on par with something you would get from the Nightfall. I think I got a 292 Ghost from it this week.

It is impossible to find people to play Destiny with. That community thread has no interest in playing with others or more specifically, team with myself :(

Do we have a Neogaf Destiny group for raid teams and stuff?
I'd love to play with some fellow gaffers. Plus I haven't done the raid yet.

I don't really care for Xur anymore, the only exo I miss are Zhao supercell and Telesto. Considering the nightfall this week having void burn, there is 0 chance Xur sells the Telesto... And the Zhao, well that's just one chance in a million if he even sells a weapon this week haha
