Deus Ex: Human Revolution |OT| I never asked for this... It gave me lemon-lime

Imo, if you don't want to just talk your way in, you NEED cloak once you get to the first floor.
Nah, the first floor is sneakable without cloak. Once you get down from the stairs, there's really only one or two dudes patrolling between the stairs and the room with all the computers. You can use cover to get past him, then if you hug the wall it's pretty easy to slip into that little side hallway that takes you down to the basement. Smooth sailing from there.

The only problem I've had doing it that way is that this is my non-hacker playthrough and I have no idea where I'm gonna find the code to the police chief's computer for the sidequest.

man HengSha is like Midgar meets Blade Runner's dystopian Los Angeles. It's pretty badass. When you're in that medical facility mission and you go on the elevator and rise above to the above layer and see the sun, you really get a sense of how oppressive it feels below. That shit would drive me crazy to live there in the undercity irl.

I kinda agree.

I've just reached Montreal but haven't done anything there yet. The police department section is by far my favorite. Sneaking through was amazing.

I'm still having lots of fun and there have been plenty of great moments but nothing lives up to that so far.

I don't care about achievements at all. This makes mixing up stealth and lethal action super fun. I'm not worried about shooting people in the head.

The best augs:
Hacking (upgrade first)
Heavy lifting (upgrade second)
Icarus (looks awesome and allows faster travel)
Cloak + reflex (awesome combo)

Those are the ones of the top of my head.

Sounds more like the new car smell. The game has a fantastic Intro, followed a pretty damn good intro level of slowly introducing everything you need to know. Without really hand holding you like most games do.

I also think the fact that you don't have a large chunk of the powers yet make it more compelling. In many ways, it really does feel like its peaks with the Medical Lab.

Seriously. I don't understand the appeal at all.

Achievements are not necesarely a bad thing; the "community" around them are.

Achievements can be done wether right or wrong. There's the achievements you get for just doing stuff you'd do anyway, wich are stupid, there are those that make you grind the game for the sake of it and arent fun at all, and then there's the ones that give you another incentive to play the game in a different way and get more out of it. Think about it, a well placed achievement can give the developers the opportunity to lead people towards content they wouldnt have probably seen or experienced in a different way.

Achievements like that in games like these make sense. I always thought about doing a pacifist/no augs run anyway before i knew about the achievement list, the fact that people might experience that because that achievement exists is a good thing.

To be honest I wish they weren't there as someone who loves playing "perfect" non-lethal stealth runs. I played a couple of hundred hours of the first game and my favourite way to play was to reload if I killed or was spotted by someone. At the end of the game I had the satisfaction of knowing that was how I completed it, getting an achievement wouldn't have made that a more enjoyable experience.

The other thing is, I've seen guys die for no apparent reason, seemingly to a bug. Like there are random corpses here and there now and then, and I did nothing to them. That wouldn't bother me if there were no achievements, because I'd know that I didn't touch them, but if they fuck up the Pacifist achievement then it would be a bit shit. Hard to explain, but I think that covers it pretty well.

Had problems exiting elevator due to guards stationed in hallway, detecting me as soon as doors opened. Was shot dead in 2 secs. So elevator goes up again, guards get ready to shoot me, but WOE, they find only a large crate. They do not understand. They do not understand that there is a man behind the large crate in the elevator. I love this game.

Thanks, I'll try that. If that doesn't work, I'll just say fuck it and run away, lol.

Just beat it. Wow, I'm going to have to chew on this for a while before I can coherently express what I felt about the endgame but... overall, one of my favorite experiences of this generation. Kudos to Eidos Montreal, they really did it: delivered a worthy sequel to one of the most ambitious, forward thinking games of its time. And just talking with friends who are currently playing through the game, it's clear that I've only scratched the surface of content and paths available in the game.

One question about the endings, I'm hoping people who played the game differently can chime in.

I played the game non-lethal the entire way through (got the Pacifist achievement as confirmation) and in every single ending Jensen mentioned how he held onto his morality and valued human life, even if it could have been easier to abuse his power and taken shortcuts to make things easier. Does he say something different if you go around killing people throughout the game?

Going to take a break, watch the making of feature, and then start up another playthrough.

I had to kill some people but mostly went nonlethal. Jensen said something along the lines of : "More often than not, I held on to my humanity and didn't take easy way out" or something like that. I don't know what he says if you murder everyone.

Haha.

Loving the game so far. Just got to Hengsha and so far the game has me hooked. Of course while I have avoided all plot hints in the run up to the game, the fact that this IS Deus Ex means I take literally nothing at face value. Should be interesting to see how my actions in Detroit resonate in the wider world.

It's not really gaming the game when the game allows you to "game" it. You simply looked at your problem, and came up with an alternate solution. That's damn cool.

It's also exactly what Deus Ex is all about.

Nah, don't agree.

Besides, I don't see why you need incentive to kill people anyways. You do get overpowered but, I mean, it's kind of expected I thought, I mean, you'd feel pretty bummed out if you were some super top of the line augmented dude facing loads of nonaugmented dudes at the dawn of augmentation and were really no more powerful than anyone else. I figured that was part of the point of the story, that there's now a divide between augmented people, nonaugmented people and of course heavily augmented people with military tech. I don't really know if there'd be too much of a way to have you be an augmented person with top of the line, as yet to be released, military mods the likes of which the common citizen currently fears and is rioting over and not have you be overpowered to a degree.

There'll still be many places you can die at in the game so it's not a cake walk but you can make it a cakewalk depending on your patience in some instances which I think is how it should be.

I personally have different gripes with the game.

I think the AI is alright in most situations but there was a spot or two where it seems I found a threshold they wouldn't pass nor pay attention to, so I could do something clearly in plane sight and actually be close to them but it made no difference. It wasn't as broken as Oblivion but it was a tad silly. And it wasn't just about stealth, take the first boss fight, there's a real cheap way to win by
running into these little "rooms" in the room, they're not rooms but more like offshoots of the main room, there's not a door or anything like that just a cutout that has more space, anyways when fighting Barret you can run in one of them, at least on my playthrough, and he absolutely will not corner you or follow you there. He'll throw grenades but there's a place he can't hit you with even them and after awhile he just goes back to searching for you as if you've disappeared.
I thought that was kind of silly. It probably had more to do with not making that fight more hard than it needed to be but it just came off as silly. I've come across other instances where normal AI characters are oblivious to you even if you're not really hiding or anything, not a lot and not enough to ruin the game but it was a little silly.

I also don't know why but I take issue with not being able to "sex up" Malik damnit! And not necessarily just Malik but, I mean, you get a freaking mod that emits pheromones to influence people and there's a charm option and it's basically limited to chatting to old women about pictures and shit. It seemed a bit underused, I know there's another mission where you can use it but it just seemed about useless. Perhaps if the "charm" option was replaced with a "humor" option I'd not have found it so silly. I know, charm works there as a description but still. For a game with whore houses and shit it was actually pretty tame.

I also take issue with some aspects of communication, there's times I think Jenson should be immediately on the horn saying something when he wasn't, it seemed a little off.

And not necessarily a gripe or criticism but this game did kind of fall into the same trap that prequels produced much later than the originals usually do and that's make the original series, set in the future, somehow look more dated than the prequel set in the past. Your VTOL dropship looks way more bad ass and futuristic than your stealth copter thingy in the original Deus Ex. Some of your powers are also superior.

But I say that's not really a gripe as, dare I say it, I think this one is actually a better game than the original Deus Ex, I wouldn't be disappointed if they pretend the original didn't happen from here on out and if they ever make a sequel they just go their own route. I definitely wouldn't care if they ignored Invisible War. So I'm not really distraught over this version of Deus Ex looking better and more futuristic than the original which was supposed to actually be set further in the future. It's a shame because while I do think this Deus Ex is the best Deus Ex since a lot of time has passed and the goalposts have been moved, along with that nostalgia that always accompanies something great, I don't think many will ever view it as better than the original.

I did something similiar but with a turrent I hacked, placed it in the elevator and it killed all the guys in the room when the doors opened.

Neither would I! In fact, this is what I'm hoping they will do.

I love the original, but I much prefer the aesthetic, atmosphere, and story of Human Revolution.

Also, I really hope they don't bring in any goddamn aliens.

On some podcast I can't recall someone mentioned they brought a turret into a boss fight through an elevator, and after the cutscene played, the turret was still sitting there and ended up owning the boss. I lol'd.

Did anyone ever hack a turret and decide that just carrying it though the whole level would save a lot of ammo?

Edit:

Geez two turret posts while I was typing this one. I actually brought said turret to the boss fight with the 3rd guy. It didn't help though because of all the cover and EMP nades being exchanged.

I don't think they were really aliens. Or am I misremembering?

http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Gray

Grays are the products of experiments undertaken by the Majestic-12-operated company, VersaLife. The Grays are created by crossing alien DNA retrieved from the Roswell Crash with human DNA and other genomes, hence Grays, along with Greasels and Karkians, are known as transgenics.

I need to replay the earlier games because I don't remember all that shit anymore :D

I had a bit of fun daisy-chaining the bots into enemies. I'd hack one, but you can't pick them up (AFAIK?), they just go their route. So I had to open the door to the next area just as the bot was sauntering past, shoot a random Merc and the bot took over from there. Then I had to do it again in the next room before the bot returned to its patrol route. Fun!

Just finished the game. SPOILER thoughts on the ending. Warning! I'm going to ramble.

Like a lot of games the different options for the end are attempting to be no win situations. I would argue that these options create straw man arguments if I as the player am making the decisions and demonstrating my philosophy. It sucks, but I don't know how a game could really do it right when the designer would have to account for every option and also be sure to create drama.

Every ending has good points in it them, but they all do things for the wrong reason. For me I would have chosen to tell the whole truth about everything NOT because science needs to be curbed, but because it's the fucking truth! This ending in the game insinuates in the option text that humanity "may" become fearful of technology and science. I'm totally fine with that if it's a possibility in the same way that the nuke could have made people fearful of science, but instead the ending has Jensen asking for a return to the dark ages. This ended up being my first choice because Eliza made no guarantee that people would become fearful.

After seeing all the endings every single one contains nuggets of truth that could easily in my mind be put together (even in this universe and situation) to make a more reasonable choice. Some regulation for this tech seems reasonable IF it's voted on in a democracy, the advance of technology is important as it helps people who are enslaved to their biology and sociological status, but lying to achieve these means isn't a virtue nor do I think it's required for the desired result. Sure a lot of these are determined by the players personal political bent, but it felt for me like none of the options were my personal politics or philosophy. The game before the ending did a pretty good job walking that line. At times you would think the game was libertarian then it would shift to socialist and everything in between. The endings for me didn't follow this wealth of political ideas. It just felt like they were trying to create a "Gone Baby Gone" style moral choice, but none of the endings earned that status.

It's very similar to Deus Ex in that sense. Though I think what really gets me is that HR tries to have it's cake and eat it too. It creates hard decisions that you must decide on. Yet it also has the main character comment about WHY you made that decision. Which makes the disconnect between the player and game much greater.

I'm taking this too seriously aren't I? Still loved the game though.

The first thing I did was turn off object highlight and mission objective markers.

Stuff like that ruins the game.

Moral dilemma time. Do I do a second playthrough because I can finish it before Space Marine comes out? Or do I get cracking on another game in my backlog, but I have no idea which game to get started on.

Give me Deus Ex mode is the way to go since it gives more challenge as well as turning all that highlighting stuff off.

My 2nd playthrough I'm playing with it on just for test and it really changes things. Some items glow from half a dozen feet away and really harms the exploration just as many of us said it would. You have to comb over things and pay attention a lot more without it.

I think the suicide ending was the most appropriate and had the best logic, none of them have the right to spin the news, and if Jensen lived then inevitably he would have had to answer for what happened. It also had the most emotional impact on me, had tears in my eyes :'(

Yes!
Although, if I recall correctly they allude to aliens in a terminal hidden behind the stairs when you save Dr. Reed and go to the LEO shuttle. Well, it's ambiguous enough they could probably ignore it in a sequel.

That's another thing I found amusing:
Adam crashing in the ocean with that damn low orbit supersonic shuttle. Yeah, sorry, don't give a damn who you are or how augmented you are, crashing into the ocean at that speed is a death sentence.

One of my nitpicks with HR is that there wasn't really any truly 'dark' areas. Lots of bright lights everywhere. Guess that's why there's no flashlight. The atmosphere in Paris (DX1) was absolutely fantastic, and I hoped to see something like that in HR.

Would he? Who actually knew Jensen was there? Walking away is always an option, I know Taggert and Darrow made Jensen out to be a man who could talk to the people, who could influence shit, but really, why would Jensen have any pull with average people? He was a player not because the people know him and hang on to every word he says but because at this point he had power over or afforded him by some of the real players and could influence those players to go out and talk to the people. He didn't need to account or do a damn thing. He could have saved his guys and fucking went back to Detroit if he wanted, maybe the Illuminati'd come after him, maybe not, but it's not like suicide was really the only option.

Also, more spoilers: I was really disappointed they didn't really do more with
Eliza. There was a lot there that I felt needed to be expanded upon. For one it was rather sudden that she was on your side, I felt her motivations and whatnot should have been elaborated upon more.
