Deus Ex: Mankind Divided I Review Thread I I asked for this

i don't really get this sort of criticism.

Is god of war 2 a half finished game? It didnt resolve the story at all.
I dont see anything wrong with cliffhangers.

Not cliffhangers..abrupt ending. Imagine playing Mass Effect 3 and the game ends right before the last act of the game. (lol, bad example, but yea..)

20 hours is disappointing, but I mean it isn't a HORRIBLE amount for a game. For an rpg it is but I can live with it.

20 hours sounds exactly right for a Deus Ex game

DE1, first and only complete playthrough:

DE:HR, first playthrough (only played once fully before the DC came out):

DE:HR:DC, 1 playthrough on the clock, includes Missing Link:

And that's a good ballpark for the series on HLTB too:

I think i heard from the developer that MD is ought to be the closing chapter of the "Adam trilogy" of Deus Ex.

But i could be wrong.

Edit: Actually, i misunderstood the issue totally, seems that the fact that this game would be part of a trilogy was leaked two years ago. So we shouldn't be so upset if the ending don't end the plot.

It not being "complete" isn't really surprising. HR shipped with half the game left on the cutting room floor. I don't really mind them sequel baiting either, because they are in the business of making games after all.

More bad news...

A reddit user who beat the game said the game is actually incomplete:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Deusex/comments/4yry57/i_just_beat_the_game_the_ending_is_absolute/

Doesn't surprise me that Square Enix would meddle with Deus Ex and break the game into 3 parts.

Deus Ex: MD is the prelude to the inevitable Final Fantasy 7 "trilogy" shit show...

The reddit user, ThatOneChappy, also had this to say:

2016: The Year of Studio Interference

Idk how 20 is far off either Tbh. My directors cut play time is 39 hours but a lot of it was also probably idle mastered for cards at the time. I remember walking around a lot to punch people too. I also did every quest and played perfect stealth.

Then again, I always take longer than most to finish a game.

This is the only thing I needed to see then, I'm more at ease. I think people are freaking out with the comments that the game seems to have been cut and the review of the guy saying it took him 12 hours.

Unless the next game in the series is announced like within a couple of months is it an issue.

There is nothing wrong with cliffhangers, but the game also have to have it's own self concluded story, while the overview story can continue. There needs to be some closer.

So I know will try to explain the negatives of this game by providing excerpts from the "negative" reviews and try to make sense of S1kkZ post below. This is coming from a HR fan and I've already pre-ordered MD. I feel like there is something "weird" about this game from reading so many reviews. I'm getting a feeling of developmental hell for this game. Anyway, let me provide the excerpts:

Paste Magazine

Hardcore Gamer

TrustedReviews

Game Informer

-----------------------

There are more reviews that echo similar sentiments. Interesting...Not sure how to process this. I am worried now. This game seemed to have suffered from 5 year developmental hell. Rumors that this game was originally one big game but chopped into 3 games for Square Enix to milk ... kind of makes sense given what we know know??

1 big hub that's not really varied, short story, abrupt ending, 1 lazy boss fight, side quests aren't good, level design is formulaic filled with convenient vents/ladders etc to help you bypass the levels. AI are dumb and run at you when you're in cover behind a doorway. Pacing is off. List goes on? Idk...let me know what you think. Maybe I'm overreacting, but after 5 years I was expecting Eidos Montreal to learn from their mistakes. It seems like they listened, but executed poorly and now this game stinks of develpemental hell and possibly that the game is "part 1" of the true Mandkind Divided game.

Also, just want to add. Apparently the pre-order mission is not supposed to be played till you BEAT the game because it contains spoilers...wtf? Seems weird! What game gives you pre-order content only to be played when you beat the game???

(sorry for rambling, I hope I made sense. I'm not trying to attack this game (I pre-ordered it! but I may cancel now)..just trying to make sense about the rumors of developmental hell and the possibility that MD was originally one big game, but all we got was "part 1"...)

Thanks for this. In the season pass thread I said I'd be waiting for a GOTY edition and this just seals the deal for me, and that's if the DLC completes the game. Forced cliffhangers in naritive games have pissed me off ever since Halo 2. Incredibly disappointing.

GUYS ! I have asked this numerous times and my purchase is based on this, are there any environments other than Prague and futuristic industrial areas? so far it looks very bland and not my thing if thats the case.

Only 1 "true" hub and that is Prague. Golem City is like a mini-area and definitely NOT a hub.

Extremely disappointing. No juxtaposition in the environments it seems. You start the game in Dubai though, but it's just for the tutorial mission.

Another final impressions from a Reddit user who just beat the game:

I finished the game today.
If you really wanna know, vague SPOILERS ahead: For me, the story was absolutely disappointing. The beginning implies a wide and fleshed out conspiracy story with ties to DX1. In the end, it keeps none of it. Even the DX:HR characters are just side notes. No character gets development or is particularly interesting (except for one,
but he has maybe 5 minutes of screentime before dying - this scene was shown in a preview btw).
There are verrrry few highlights, especially when you compare it to DX:HR. There is just one city hub and hardly any globetrotting missions (4, if you count Dubai). So despite the size of Prague, the game feels very small compared to DX1 und DX:HR. And I, as the player, felt alone, because there was no one like Pritchard, Malik, or Sarif to sympathize with further than Jensen. The writers just willingly teased all interesting plot points/character developments and dropped them to save them for the next game. It is cheeky, imo. Then, the game ends abruptly and feels like the painfully stretched out equivalent of the first act of HR (first boss). Pure style over substance this time around, story wise. I'm sad as I'm writing this. The franchise became victim of what it tried (especially in MD!) to criticise: corporate conglomerats hungry for power and money.

Edit: I spoiler-tagged part of the quote, but to be 100% honest, it's not a spoiler since it's shown in a preview. Actually, you'll laugh and be even more disappointed if you read the spoiler tag part lmfao.

It does feel as if they had issues during development, or something.

It's lacking something, and doesn't feel complete. I got it early and it didn't even take me twenty hours to beat it, although I did a lot of stealth, got lost at times, hacked about 75-80% of what I found and did almost all of the side missions. I couldn't believe it when it ended, that it was that short.

When I read stories like that, I think of what happens "otherwise."

The reality of Mankind Divided is that it is a game that took 5-years to develop.

If it was going to be a bigger, more ambitious, longer title that wasn't split up into a potential trilogy, does that mean we're only getting Mankind Divided in 2018/2019?

Even if MD was super awesome, that kind of dev time would have ridiculous sales expectations.

What i find funny is that 5 year development, the whole augment your preorder crap was all for that mess?

Reviews: 81% average. Great game but the story isn't very strong.

This thread: The game is short, with a terrible ending, and obviously dragged through development hell. Cancel all your pre-orders!

Wat.

Sorry, what I meant to say is like the covert agent pack and in-game mission is still the current pre-order CONTENT...It's like they were too lazy to put it in the "delayed" game.

Looks like its going south. Return those copies before its too late.
Man, fuck!
I wonder if I should just wait a few weeks and pick it up for $60 used instead of the $90 here with tax.

I would, unless you can't wait.

I was going to just get it from the library and play it sometime, but ended up getting lucky and being given an early copy through a friend's work. I wouldn't spend the $90 on it.

They were always going to be preorder items and their "augment your preorder" promotion was BS with no real marker of how many there were

Lazy tho, def

I'm a fan of HR and the art style and gameplay seem really good, but yea I guess I could work through my backlog and save some cash. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. The gameplay looks so good though.

I may not be able to hold it together, I'ma end up giving those stinking EB cashiers my $90 I'm afraid.

HR was a 9/10 to me when I played it.

And given how much NeoGAF worries about performance, I expect to see lots of comments about how glitchy this is.

So are we at the stage where unbridled, delusional hype and inflated expectations has made way for hysterical, reactionary disappointment for a game in both cases most of you are yet to play?

It does feel as if they had issues during development, or something.

The Square Enix in-house engine development curse. It's began to afflict even their western studios now.

I, for one, welcome our new Unreal 4 overlords.

List of victims:

Final Fantasy XIII trilogy
Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy XV
Kingdom Hearts 3 (Though it may have narrowly escaped the curse)
Hitman
And now, DXMD.

At least 7R is safe with UE4.

I don't think anyone had "delusional hype" for this game. I mean, HR was a great game when it came out. Now it's 2016 and MD is upon us for the new generation. A lot of us wanted a sequel, not a half-baked one. Sure it still has great gameplay. I'm sure the game is going to be fun when playing, but when that ending suddenly comes, it's going be ME3 feels all over again (for slightly different reasons)

I can only thank the internet for letting us know about this beforehand, unlike ME3...

Just checked my Steam playtime and took me 19 hours to get through Human Revolution. I played on the hardest difficulty and did every mission, so there's that. Not sure why everyone is panicking at some of the playtime numbers for MD because it sounds about right to me.

I'll judge it as a half baked sequel and ME3 tier disappointment when I have fucking played it and not when the pre-release internet echochamber decides to fixate on the most negative reviews as universal acceptance that the Deus Ex sky is falling.
