[DF] MLB The Show 21 - PlayStation Studios' First Multi-Plat Game - PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S, Pro vs One X!

Native 4K while targeting 60fps is still a bit much for the new consoles. Their GPUs are better suited for resolutions between 1440p and 2160p if the target is 60fps.
I'm forever perplexed why anyone in 2021 wouldn't use reconstruction, at least basic drs. Framerate is king, balance it.

I am kinda bummed out that they didn't test the One X and PS4 Pro versions running on Series X and PS5.

given that the graphical differences are so minor, it might actually help with performance to simply run the last gen versions on the new consoles to improve performance.
I could see them run at a locked 60fps in balanced mode

Good point, would imagine a locked result

Those dips happen in the non interactive "cutscenes", just like in Fifa and other sports games. It's no big deal.

down to 33FPS on xbox in some places. There is no way this game is optimised.

3) DirectX vs OpenGL APIs?
PS4/5 (or 3 for that matter) doesn't use OpenGL, they have their own low-level APIs akin to Vulkan/DX12. While the details are sparse (it's all under an NDA), you can get very close to the metal if you want. And at the same time shoot yourself in the foot in many spectacular ways, "with great power" and all that.

Seriously though, the game is not optimized AT ALL. Floating hands everywhere when they supposedly have hands on hips, helmets, etc. Bats clipping through everything

uhm, there are dips during gameplay. they are small but they are there.

and either way it's extremely jarring in a game like this where there are "cutscenes" almost every 10 seconds. in FIFA you can have multiple minutes without a camera cut, but in a baseball game almost every 5 to 10 seconds there's a non-interactive sequence

Maybe there is a pattern? Sport games prefer the ps5 architecture? NBA2K and now this. Fifa is the exception because they cap the cut scene to 30 fps.

I BLAME COVID!
Truth.

Game has been well optimized and rock solid every year. Last year was rough on an already super short dev cycle, and 5 new platforms to code and optimize for. They will be patching it as they always do, and it will be tightened up.

Next year should be a different ballgame out of the gate, pun intended.

Those extra frames now and then aren't enough to get me to spend 60. Nice try, Jim. And besides, my HD only has room left for Returnal at this point. Unleash the hard drives!

You guys can have the extra fraction of a frame per second. I just played on GP the other day with the 3 year $1 upgrade. Who wants to pay $70? lol
You didn't pay $1 for 3 years but at least you mentioned the "upgrade" part of the promo. Why do people never comment on exactly what they paid? Is it he $1 sounds better than $180? I really want people to say the total amount because then we can see what actual deals are out there that they have taken advantage of. My GP will expire in less than a year and if I notice a good deal I would like to try to take advantage of it.

About what I expected to see.
People will shit on the parity but do you think if Gears suddenly got released on PlayStation and the PS5 was more powerful that they would have their own game run better on the competition?

Tiny frame rate advantage isn't as good as a $70 price advantage 🤷‍♂️

Though idk why the fuck the game drops frames at all, it looks like any PS4 Show title.

This is really not a next-gen game. You can install the PS4 version on PS5 and basically get true 4K at 60 FPS since the frame rate is unlocked. You just have to pick the "sharper" graphical mode. I did the same thing with MLB 20.

Yeah I don't think Microsoft accidently made a less technically impressive version of the XSX.

Hopefully this statement is okay, considering the XSX is technically superior to the XSS and Microsoft purposefully put out two versions of the console, one at a higher price with better specs and a lower-priced version for people who aren't interested in the extra power of the XSX.
so, the Xbox SX is the pro console?
And the Xbox SS is the default console?

I already have difficulty with the names... I can't keep up...

Honestly didn't expect a Sony game to run so close.

I still absolutely suck at this game lol
Heh yeah can't believe some expected parity here, I expected 1080p30 or some shit like that 😝
Gfx and res parity with about 10fps difference in rare dips is plain ballsy! I guarantee you'll see nothing like that in Microsoft's first or better titles, no foil hat needed lol

Oh and yup I suck at this game too! Still not quite sure if the ball I throw should be aimed into the square... and why that square is red! as in... wrong? Why isn't it green?? Anyway I eventually managed to get through one match though, a terrible loss of course but I took a screengrab of the PS Studio logo for a dashboard background so I'm still oddly satisfied from this short playthrough of a game I don't understand and won't likely ever play again 😋

Hey, this is one of my theories too... Who knows, maybe MS really do see it that way.

Is this another thread where we pretend the hardware is the reason poorly optimized games run badly?
No, this is the thread where we pretend Sony forced parity....no wait....they forced the Series X version to run worse.

What is interesting tho, and I think they mentioned this in the video....that the framerate is unlocked for cutscenes. Where normally thats capped to 30fps.

It was a Trojan Horse all along. Put it on Xbox, demonstrate PS5 superiority. Destroy Phil.

Jim Ryan is a genius.

Sorry Phil, I'd no longer go gay for you. Too much of a bitch. 😜
At least we don't have to pay £70 for it. Wasn't all PS Fans saying it was trash last few weeks 😂😂

Gamepass gets you gimped versions of Sony games apparently.
I thought Metacritic was the law here! 😎

Just having some fun here lol this is an easy win for PS5. And Sony since they'll probably earn more money from this game than any of their previous versions.

Sony purposefully made it worse on Xbox.

Looks like Sony owes you an extra 10FPS. Try contacting their support and explain in a civil manner, that your copy is 10FPS slower and suffers from bad frame pacing. Maybe all you have to do, is to disable the DRM launcher in the background?

I do not see any difference in game play between PS5 version and the Gamepass Series X version and I have completed 2 seasons of Road to the Show on both consoles.

You know Ps5 version got a bit more attention probably, not surprising results here.

Biggest win is Xbox gamers finally getting the game and not having to settle for RBI lol.

You sure about that, bruv? I think it's the Sony bros who need to vacate the thread.

Having the Sony crowd entering this thread in the hope of being consoled by the odd higher framerate is like a dude who comes home to catch his wife getting shagged by his most hated neighbour and who then desperately tries to console himself by making her tell him that he is better in bed :messenger_tears_of_joy:
You're not wrong. Basic port runs nearly the same on XSX. It's an odd thing to crow over a small frame rate difference in a tiny fragment of the game.

Trust me, as someone who chose Series X over PS5 I'm not feeling bad at all over this. 😆
