[Digital Foundry] Cronos: The New Dawn - DF Review - PS5/PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X|S Console Face-Off

Even when game is dropping to the lowest it's still 8.5% higher resolution on Pro for some reason, maybe what DF suspects is wrong and game is aware that it's running on Pro.

And in gameplay it has higher res most of the time:

DRS also takes some time to react, that might be the reason why Pro drops lower when there is fire - it starts with higher resolution when it happens.
Interesting stuff.

Robocop is not a good benchmark comparison.
I've checked it in several situations and it seems like several settings are different between PS5 and XSX. *Latest version
DF "PS5: It's also rendering a more complex road surface which could be making reflections especially expensive to compute."

I'm gonna dispute you on some of this stuff.

Not saying that your screens are manipulated on purpose, but it's possible that like kevboard kevboard said, you may have left something like CA on. The color fringing on the "we loan or" text on the Xbox looks exactly like what CA looks like on edges.

I wanted to look at it myself and just took these screens from both versions in their Performance modes. The difference in visuals is incredibly hard to tell apart, the Xbox version does have less clutter on the roads, the 'complex' stuff DF mentioned.

In motion, tho, the difference between the two is practically non-existent.

I would always choose the version that runs clearly better between the two.

Anyway, without further ado, here's the pics.

In all sets, the PS5 is always the first one and the SX is the second. They're not exactly 100% lined up, I tried my best :P

Set 1:

In this one it actually looks like the SX version is getting better Lumen / AO coverage under the debris. Though it may be subjective per person which look they like more.

Set 2:

I'm sorry I couldn't get these lined up exactly, other than the little difference in perspective, these look virtually identical. No extra dithering/AO/DoF like artifacts on the edges of the car like one of your pics.

If I had to make a remark, I'd say the "Save gas" sign looks a bit clearer on the PS5 version here.

Set 3:

Again, apologies for not being 1 : 1 but in this set you can see the extra 'layer' of asphalt on the PS5, tho it also adds grime to the Lumen reflection on the middle left side, basically this looks like SX was more flooded and PS5 was less as to how 'shiny' the puddle looks. Other than that, the texture quality etc looks just about identical. At a glance maybe the green sign in front of the graffiti looks a smidge sharper on PS5 but this is like pulling apart hair kind of difference.

Set 4:

Get off my back, I'm not DF, I can't line up pictures for shit. :messenger_loudly_crying:

Anyway, the graffity, van texture, the wall etc all looks basically identical to me in these pictures, even the asphalt here looks the same, If anyone can pick apart differences, I couldn't spot them at a glance at least.

In conclusion, thank you for visiting my Ted Talk about nitpicking pointless stuff.

In conclusion, thank you for visiting my Ted Talk about nitpicking pointless stuff.
It's common for there to be some setting differences between PS5 and XSX.
Most games only have small differences that are difficult to tell visually.
What I'm trying to say is that the different resolutions and settings in RoboCop don't make them suitable for benchmarking frame rates side by side.
Also, I agree with you that frame rate is more important than graphics in Performance mode.
I think this game is best experienced playing in boosted mode on PS5 Pro.

I hope my post is translated correctly.:messenger_grinning_sweat:

- Developed on Unreal Engine 5
- No bespoke PS5 Pro support in the game at the moment
- Pro's inherent benefit is running the same code as PS5 with higher DRS and performance average

Visuals:

- All consoles have a 30fps Quality and 60fps Performance mode barring Series S with a single 30fps mode.
- Quality mode's main advantage is a resolution boost, all other visual features are identical.
- Some Volumetric settings (like fog) are also running at lower resolution in Performance mode

- Difference between the three consoles (PS5/Pro/Series X) are rather muted
- Some tested areas show variances in DRS, SX: 1080p, PS5: 1026p, Pro: 1242p
- The ordering of DRS scaling is relative to GPU strength of each machine
- Another tested area shows SX and PS5 at 864p and Pro at 900p
- A third tested area shows SX at 1008p, PS5 at 864p and Pro at 1152p

- The 30fps Quality mode boosts pixel counts on all the tested areas above
- One test shows a flat 1440p on all consoles when DRS is maxed out, with 720p on Series S before TSR
- A more taxing moment on Quality shows PS5/SX at 1080p, Series S at 720p and Pro at 1296p

- Series S cut-backs some texture quality and can result in blurry soup like textures in places
- Shadow fall-off on distant objects is lower quality, fog quality is also a lower quality than others

Performance:

- 30fps play on all machines is rock solid based on DF's testing in the first few hours
- Cut-scenes also keep locked to 30fps.
- This is the default mode the game starts at.
- DF noted one crash on Series S during testing.

- 60fps mode has PS5 Pro showing the most closest to its target on average
- Pro can run up to 10~fps higher than base PS5 with SX slotting in the middle
- SX can have adaptive tearing on the top portion of the screen

- Base PS5 has the most egregious drops during game play with lurches into the 40's, putting it below the ideal VRR range, whenever blood or effects are front and center
- Pro can drop in the above segments too with general drops being to mid 50's while some drops to 40's remain
- SX is similar to Pro with drops to mid 50's at the most
- SX and PS5 Pro offer a more playable experience compared to base PS5.
864p on PS5 and STILL drops to 45 FPS!!!

I can only imagine how rough the PS5 is gonna get it when the PS6 comes out and having try to run cross gen games at 660p

Being the same Studio and UE5 engine, a possible port of Silent Hill 2 Remake should come out decently optimized without much effort and cost on XS.
