Digital Foundry - Exclusive - The Last Of Us Part 2 - PS5 Pro PSSR Upgrades Tested

That was the idea but now games have reached a point where they can't look much better but the res and frames sure as hell can.
Take GT7 for example the cars basically already look real. The biggest improvements for GT7 will be FPS and res.
Games still can look way better once Raytracing gains mass adoption. But I'm not talking about that.

I'm talking about the fact that they are showing a PS4 game...we believe in generation...They should've shown something like Returnal for example (a PS5 game). That is the only thing I'm saying... A bunch of people get triggered cuz they know this is a stretch.

You will never improve the shitty operation system and interface on pc.
Hardware is not the only component of good user experience.
I certainly agree in the optic of a gaming machine, but it's inevitable as a PC isn't just a gaming machine. I feel Steam helps in this regard.

I think Microsoft should have created a really gaming os and pc a long time ago. Remove everything not necessary for gaming. Let control it through a gamepad, no more windows menus etc.

I think this is how the next hybrid Xbox is going to look like.

That's not who Microsoft are as a company.

That's what the Xbox is supposed to be.

I would say this is an Xbox, but which allows you to replace components. More universal than a traditional console, but less universal than a traditional pc
(I personally hate a traditional pc).

Just finished watching. Is it me or is the Pro image slightly different color/contrast, it kinda looks like it has a slight tuch of something akin to AMD CAS.

Then you find yourself in a No Man's Land where it's too much of a headache to be a console without having the customization of a PC. Attempting to bridge the gap has been tried before with horrendous results. See Steam Machines. It's really 100% locked and easy like a console or 100% open and more complex like a PC. There's no place for somewhere in-between in the eyes of customers. I personally wouldn't mind, but we're in the minority.

That's your opinion tho, I use Steam Big Picture for gaming and, in those rare ocasions I'm needing to use M&K (mostly because I can, just to do a quick internet search or whatever) I have a small keyboard with a trackpad behind the coach, you wouldn't even notice it exists if I didn't point it out to you.

Also, once you're playing a game, you're not asking yourself why you're not playing it on a console lol, you're just playing the fucking thing. Oh, I play from a coach on a TV, btw, so I use a controller for everything there.

Oh No Fire GIF

WTF is going on in here

We partying like it's FUD Wars 2020 baby!!!

True. I would have liked to see them use the additional power on some upgraded settings though.

Well the thing to remember is this is just a basic patch without fully utilizing the extra render or RT capabilities. So it's pretty impressive how damn transformational the image quality is in bringing to light the original asset settings to begin with. See the picture above. It's just insane looking and despite being a "PS4 game" does look like a next gen PS5 title to me, even beyond that really when considering resolution clarity and smoothness in frames.

We will get even better PS5 Pro modes for new games being developed. Excited to see Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei and what they can accomplish.

I get you but returnal was easily possible and could have been a PS4 game also.

...and also looks like one, making it an even better case for significant improvement on the Pro.
Returnal looks sick and looks like a ps5 game. What I'm saying it could be downscaled to work on PS4.

On another note does anyone know if TLOUP2 on ps5 pro will have the "unlock frame rate" option when playing it in pro graphics mode?

But more so, eh?

Name them. Show us them receipts.

Disc plate will be the same. The others I still believe will be the same, but there are conflicting information all over the internets.

I never understood how people could believe that PS5 Slim plates woult fit on the Pro...

I mean the size of the two consoles is completely different. How could they possibly fit?

LOL

The drive cover would have to fit at the very least. They are not going to run two different disc SKUs for a plate.
I watched the cnet video and it looks like there is no way the slim plates will fit the pro when they show the side by side.
Shown here too

Just quickly looking at them in that shot I don't see any reason why they shouldn't fit...

A little fill/cut/copy/paste confirms what I saw at a glance.

They appear to be the same dimensions at least in x/y - If they didn't make them compatible it must have been for some annoying technical reason 'cause they'd be daft to have them different just for the sake of it.

They will fit. They are literally the same thing. The only reason the Pro is bigger has nothin to do with its sides, but rather its height and thickness. And both are due to things that have got nothing to do with the plates.

Sony is not going to sell the disc drive add-on for the PS5pro, Which uses the PS5 base plates, and then 3 different plates for the rest of the console, or sell 4 entirely different plates just for the Pro. That would be extremely stupid on their part.

What the fuck is your avatar

Don't think I've ever seen a console where people state they don't care and it's shit, make so many people continuously show up in threads over it. Really is something special.

In motion on my TV this is really ugly to me, the sharpening pass they're using is far too strong.

It's giving me James Cameron 4K Blu-ray vibes with their AI/DNR/Sharpening or flashbacks to early universal catalogue Blu-rays with Edge Enhancement. It's unnaturally sharp to the point of distraction with a faint ringing to everything, there's such a thing as too much delineation. I simple couldn't play this.

It's gonna suck if a lot of games come out on the Pro using PSSR with otherwise great image quality and they ruin it with ugly sharpening that can't be disabled by the user.

I wanna get a Pro eventually, but if they force stuff like this into games and I end up having to roll back to old PS5 modes, it'd make having one pointless for certain titles. They need to take a leaf out of Insomniac's book and disable the sharpening pass (or better yet, should anyone like this, provide the option). Or look at Guerilla with their bespoke solution which favours a slightly softer but much more natural image.

Fingers-crossed devs see the light and skip or limit the PSSR sharpen pass. PSSR seems quite capable without inserting and cranking up rudimentary, artificial methods like this.
that depends on if enough people complain about it or that sony cares about people who complained

weirdly nvidia's dlss had a super ugly sharpening pass after a while (around 2.2 version). I mean it didn't cause massive amounts of complaints but you would see complaints in lots of forums and threads and finally nvidia removed the sharpening pass and made it optional as a seperate thing that developers can add (nvidia image scaling). as to why nvidia decided to listen to those people, we may never know, maybe they themselves decided that it didn't look good. after all nvidia folks also play games with their own tech like DLSS, so maybe they figured it looked bad so they removed it due to their own testing. maybe it will happen with sony too. we will see

although they never removed the horrible sharpening pass from horizon forbidden west, so no idea.

The rescaling is really surprising, I didn't expect it to be so good. It is clear that in the future it can give a lot of joy.

What a pity that the high price of the PS5pro is going to make many people underestimate this feature, which in other circumstances would be much talked about and appreciated.

Just watched the video. PSSR seems to be a game changer. Huge difference between performance and Pro. Makes me instantly wanna pre-order.

What nobody is comparing is the 40hz balanced mode. Thats what I play Sony games on if it's available. How is it against thst mode. Everybody knows performance mode looks like shit.

Middle one is the worst, but left and right already take me some seconds. I don't think i could recognize any difference when in motion and without direct comparison, which usually is the case while playing.
Other than the fact that the right is 30fps and the left is 60fps? In motion the difference is bigger.

Seems like the whole point of Pro design is to keep shit compatible with the slim, it would be very stupid if plates are not compatible after what's been communicated so far.

They communicated they are not compatible

Only the BD drive and the vertical stand are

They also compared it with the Quality mode and Pro Mode has better IQ overall.

If you took your time to follow the whole saga from the beginning, you might have read the PS Blog post when the Pro was unveiled strongly indicating plates were interchangeable, so yeah, they fucked up if the chart is the definitive answer for this.

In what universe?

Players can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, or swap out console covers when they become available.

"When they become available" means they are NOT available yet

cant side with sony on this one. they purposely screw up the faceplates compatibility so they can sell more.

This universe, let me put some more context, since you're nitpicking the part you want:

"We kept the look of the PS5 Pro consistent with the overall PS5 family of products. You'll notice the height is the same size as the original PS5, and the width is the same size as the current PS5 model to accommodate higher performance specs. Players can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, or swap out console covers when they become available."

So why would they say the width is the same? Put disc drive and covers on the same sentence when the drive is compatible? Couldn't they just straight up say the covers ARE NOT compatible?

then they follow with this pic, showing IDENTICAL plates

a53e4f9390533d7070704a70a9940df8cc329e6d.jpg

"PS5 Pro fits perfectly within the PS5 family of products and is compatible with the PS5 accessories currently available, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore. The user interface and network services will also remain the same as PS5."

Reinforcing the idea that acessories are interchangeable.

There's a reason everyone was basically sure plates were compatible and are now surprised it might not the case, you're not smart because only you in the whole world knew this was the situation since blog post, it was just awful communication from Sony's side if not purposely deceiving to avoid initial backlash.

While they could have moved the plates up above the strip and kept the same size, thinking about it further the outwards curve would not have matched. Maybe they could have kept compatibility with the original Phat somehow but then I imagine the disc drive difference would have been an issue. I'm just glad the disc drive (and disc drive plate too?) is compatible at least.
