Digital Foundry: Hands-on with DriveClub (second tech preview)

Also comparing sims to arcade is dumb physics especially precise and complex ones easily push a system as much as eyecandy.

A lot of modern arcade racers are also running fairly sophisticated physics engines. They're running real world physics but tweaked so they aren't as harsh as you'd get in a sim.

Looks amazing but i still don't get why they decided to sacrifice the 60 fps and go for the photorealism, his direct competition (Project Cars) looks almost as good as Driveclub and it's not a fucking slideshow.

The 30 FPS slideshow! We've got another Johnny Five!

We are talking degrees and I never said they didn't but the amount adds up and it still cost power. We know the devs of this game don't have enough power if they did the IQ or FPS could've easily been upped same for the types of physics. None of these 3 are happening so there is a clear limit they have whether it comes from being an early gen PS4 title or the fact there isn't enough grunt.

They are not 1 to 1.

My question is whether they are reducing superfluous objects within around the track limits to mitigate object pop in?

The comments to that video gave me cancer.

DriveClub looks adorable and I don't really care if it's 30fps or not, tho it would be better if it had a higher framerate of course.

Never got the chance to play it yet, but Im really looking forward to the ps plus version for now. If I like the gameplay, Im sure I will upgrade to the full version.

How does that make sense. You know it would be a better game, yet you don't care. Why even bother at all.

I think this is the best looking racing game ever made, across all plattforms, and its not even close.

Will be interesting who diverse the racing will be with all this dynamic stuff.
I won't be buying the full game until the weather update is in, though.
PS+ version will do at first.

Ok, i watched some Project Cars PS4 footage and the visuals are subpar compared to the PC version. Anyways, as i stated in other threads, i prefer 60fps instead of photorealism.

I love the hyperbole.

Yeah that was noticeable in the beta gameplay videos. It by no means is a dealbreaker for me, and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they added pop-in intentionally to remind players that it's a game and not real life! lol

All that is important to me is a rock-fucking-solid 30 FPS, which they've achieved, and that the gameplay feels amazing, which from all accounts they have also achieved. The fact that the game looks absolutely gorgeous is just a fucking treat. Got damn I cannot wait.

Looks like those delays are paying off. If the AA is anything like I:SS, I'll cry with joy!

It very well could be. DF seems to think they've got the crispest image quality out of PS4 yet with this game, which is shocking to me considering all that's going on. Unbelievable. 1ST YEAR GAME. We are in for a wild ride this gen!

Photorealism is overrated and constantly fleeting with each year that passes FPS is not.

Bro fist.

and drviveclub can't be played at 60fps. Both games have plenty of tradeoffs and considering I'm usually more focused on my lines than the environment in racing game it's not all that big of a deal.

We all have different preferences and wants.

I was replying directly to the part of his quote that I bolded, nothing else. I wasn't trying to score points or anything. So I'm not sure why your reply to me is relevant...but sure, I agree with what you're saying.

He said it looked better which in certain areas it certainly can as comparisons have been done. I will be honest I don't think you were scoring points but the person you replied to was just saying overall not necessarily only the environments.

Shaping up to be a technical marvel.

I'm confused though. What weather systen is in the game at launch then? No clouds, just day-night cycle?

You guys realize that most of the article is quotes from the developer. It reads more like a advertisement than a tech article.

DF doesn't go into any details themselves. I want to know about the dithered fade in specifically myself.

The best graphics ever imo. In fact if this was 60fps, i'd say its graphics wouldn't be beat this generation except by DriveClub 2 or a new Motorstorm.
well, if it was 60fps, then, before anything else, the game would have exactly half the time to prepare the pretties for each frame. so...

That's why something inside me dies everytime a glorious looking console exclusive comes out.

They should allow us to use two consoles in a SLI/crossfire-style setup and get 1080p@60fps.

That or, you know, port the game to pc (even years later, I don't care, I'll enjoy the game twice). xD

I don't understand Project Cars comparisons.

Project Cars doesn't look anywhere near as good but that's unfair to that title as we are comparing two titles with massive budget differences surely. Project Cars has like 1/10th the budget of this game.

I've seen Polyphony run setups like that for monitor spanning, but never to up framerate or effects or anything like that.

This game is mightly impressive, everything looks so good and blends so well together. Having something like this within the first year of the console's lifecycle is quite an achievement.

Also as someone said in another thread, the UI looks gorgeous. I can't wait to play this game, I'm actually asking for a day off on october 7 so I can play this gem.

Hahaha oh keit4 never change man.
The PC version doesn't even touch DC.

I also love that your pretending your this crusader for 60fps when all I see is constant excitement about FH2 ohhh wait but that game is on. Oh yeah nevermind

Also, pCARS is a crossgen game. DC is not only nextgen-only, but it is 1st party game.

Can you not troll for once? Like just in one thread that I see you post in. I would probably die of shock.

Seeing the game like it is now makes you so glad they delayed it as i thought the game looked quite poor last year.

By the end of this generation this game is going to look strange to us when we look back on it. you can't see it now because your eyes don't know any better.

Finally have something to show off the PS4 with besides sports...

Really really impressive stuff Team Evo...Still think I want another Motorstorm though..but this is day one!

Did the developer run the FPS counter? Are you expecting a different IQ and FPS than was demonstrated in the videos? Not sure what you're getting at here. Are you saying tearing, frame pacing, etc that the video does not show may still find its way into the final product?

I'm looking forward to seeing how this looks with motionflow turned on. Since it's a solid 30fps it should smooth out very nicely. As long as the input delay is low enough I might just play on that mode.

It would still look better during play though, if not in screenshots.

Anyway, they made their decision and Cars is getting my money as a result.

Especially if the collaborative nature of Sony first party studios still exists. Lessons learned, tricks used, etc by these guys will be passed on to others.

First year title guys. Wonder what Evo will have in store for us by generations end. JackNicholsonNodding.gif

You are smarter than this. The resource demand for the most basic stuff is higher in a open world racer, so the 30fps can get a free pass.

How does that make sense. You know it would be a better game, yet you don't care. Why even bother at all.
I was starting to be a bit concerned some DC thread had started discussing 60 fps virtues without seeing you around.

He said it looked better which in certain areas it certainly can as comparisons have been done. I will be honest I don't think you were scoring points but the person you replied to was just saying overall not necessarily only the environments.
Not necessarily only the environments, because I could also argue that from all the footage I've seen, the DriveClub lighting engine is still putting Project Car's one to shame, despite whatever clean IQ / ginormous resolution / insanely high framerate you make Project Cars run at.

Every time I see something new posted on this game I get just a little more hyped. Wasn't planning on picking up this game but now starting to think that the PS+ version may not cut it for me. :)
