Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Halo: The Master Chief Collection

I wonder if alot of the issues DF brought up were due to time constraints and not hardware & developer limitations. It makes me wonder when Microsoft decided to commission this collection - perhaps as a result of the poor sales and Halo 5 not launching until fall 2015.

Just my speculation

The switching is more than just cosmetic, without the old engine they would've had to rebuild the whole game from scratch on the new engine.

I did have this on order, but not anymore, after seeing the video & that the original performs better than the revamped version, how the original is not locked 60fpps i simply do not understand, it performs better than the revamped version.

I played the CE version in 3D & it was fantastic!

I'm no longer going to buy this when i still have the original Halo games & the consoles to play them on.

I have Far Cry 4 on the way & also i'm still enjoying Destiny & have just started Bayonetta 2 i have plenty of things to play, i may pick it up when it's cheaper.

I'm disappointed really :(

I think that shitting on PS3 for a ~15% difference in resolution in multiplats while patting XB1 on the head with its 50-100% difference gave that out already.

Especially if the multiplat comparison articles were written by Richard Leadbetter, who's a huge Xbox fanboy (in one of the articles that he wrote, he did everything he could to discredit the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII being better than the 360 version).

Halo 3 looks SO good. I'm really excited to tear through Tsavo Highway over and over again. Not to mention the fun of breaking out of maps like the good ol' days. I really can't wait, it's going to be so much fun.

it's clear from our preview of The Master Chief Collection that the scale of the achievement here is considerable. Unprecedented, even. We can boot up our Xbox One and an excellent, easy-to-use interface gives us quick and easy access to the entirety of the Master Chief story: every game, every level, every options combination - with single-player, co-op and multiplayer game variations all intact. And on top of that, there's the small matter of the remastered Halo 2 multiplayer component too, plus the promise of the Halo 5 beta next month. There's a huge story here where we've only just begun to scratch the surface, and we're looking forward to sharing more.

awww yissss give me (っ◕‿◕)っmoar halo!

How the hell do the "originals" perform better. They are not even close to 1080p/60 except if you play CE and 2 on PC.

It's a shame Richard provided no screenshots, especially of Halo 2 Anniversary because even the highish bitrate (33Mbit/sec 60fps) Gamersyde videos aren't great for this. There's not much camera movement at this point.

Are the blacks crushed in the remaster? I want to make sure its not my surface 2.

These are games originally developed and optimized exclusively for very specific hardware. These games probably dont scale that well or very easily. TLOU was apparently quite an undertaking getting it remastered for the PS4, for example.

360 was a bit more straightforward to develop for than the PS3 however.

Just because Halo PC has a weird incompatibility with MSAA doesn't mean that shouldn't be fixed, or they shouldn't use a ppAA instead of nothing.

It's not weird. Halo PC uses multiple render targets for their post-processing*, and D3D9 simply does not support MRTs with MSAA. The Mac port didn't have that limitation.

*The Xbox engine was pulling some peculiar tricks in how they handled the same effects that just didn't translate well to the DX APIs at the time.

I stupidly assumed they'd all be a locked 60 fps. Hearing about these drops is depressing and definitely kills a lot of the interest I had in it. A shooter with framerate issues bad enough to affect controller response is not a shooter I want to play. I hate Destiny, but at least it's a solid 30 all the time.

Or a testament to Bungie, but thats not a "cool" thing to say is it?

A testament of the former Bungie, lots of the key talent that shaped Halo is long gone.

!? 0.o Oh no, it dropped from 60 to 58, this game has jutters, if it wasn't for the diagrams on the screen I wouldn't have even known the frame rate had dropped. This is the kind of "drop" you need tools to actually notice, so its kind of... alright, I guess its a big deal.

It's not a huge deal, and I'm picking up the game either way, but the framerate dips in CE and H4 are pretty constant.
H3 is rock solid though. Looking forward to that a lot since I never got to play the original :3

Am I reading this right, they could do 1080p native for Halo 3 and 4 but not 2?
Seems like they really wanted that instant-switch to the original version of the game rather than introduce a delay. Bad call imho.

I wish each game could handle 1080p at 60fps without issues, but that may be a lot to ask from some of these games.

Halo 4's noticeable, gameplay affecting framerate drops stand out as the most problematic issue in the DF analysis.

Halo 3 without jaggies is something I'm really looking forward to.

Sucks all these news outlets only get to mess with one level of each campaign.

I'll be interested to see the multiplayer analysis; that's what really matters.

Halo 4 looks strange to me.

The CPU cores for the 360 are clocked at around 3 GHz and the Cores on the Xbox One are at 1.7 GHz.

Even though the Xbox One has 8 cores multithreading is hard to program for when it comes to games. 343i obviously didn't have enough time to optimize MCC for the Xbox One.
Doesn't mean cpu it's the cause. Xone struggle to handle 60 fps at 1080p for tons of different reasons quite know from awhile. This is why I'm expected these results. I was quite skeptical when they announced 60 fps target at 1080p.

I don't know where to ask this question since there's no OT yet, but is the day 1 patch included with my Halo MCC preload?

Am I going to have to wait and DL 20 GB when the game unlocks at 12 ET?

The day one content/patch is supposed to be downloaded and ready for the pre-loaded versions before the release date.

Thanks. Cannot wait.

As for the DF impressions, a bit disappointing for me to be honest, I kind of wish they had just scrapped the dual engine thing, there's no way a 360 remaster of Halo 1 shouldn't hold 60 fps.

But it's such a great value that I'm sure I won't care too much once I start playing.

halo 2 looks a little rough in those screenies posted in this thread. i guess that's the resolution drop due to supporting the engine switching thingie?

You know that's almost always the case with videogames. There's always something you can improve if you had more time.

Despite the hard-coded 30 Hz issues they found in Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, I'm still super pumped to see that game running at nearly twice the resolution of the original.360 version. Every game sounds like it's improved. I can't wait.

60FPS is just a buzz word now, I think they need to say 60FPS locked in order for it to mean anything. Either way this game looks great and I will buy it day 1.

Wow Much Value!

We have the full campaign unlocked, we just can't talk about anything outside of one mission per game... until Wednesday when the uber patch arrives! :)
