Since the lightyear thread was closed.

There was some hope that Lightyear would hold for the 2nd week. When Frozen came out it stayed in theaters for almost a year. Instead Lightyear dropped fairly rapidly down 64.1%
And ridiculously Top Gun barely missed 1st.

That's not rapidly, that's a pretty standard drop.

*EDIT*
I should mention it's pretty standard for the industry, not necessarily for Pixar itself.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Did you not know Multiverse of Madness made over 940 million at the box office?
Yeah well, if you're a Doctor Strange fanatic like me I actually even bought it on Vudu after watching it on Disney Plus.

So I'm part of the freaking problem.

Well you know what they say, "go broke, get woke.... up by that McDonald's early bird who advertises for sausage McMuffins" but then you find out you're so broke you can't afford one of those sausage McMuffins. So you woke up but you're broke up.

That's the last time I let my ex-girlfriend steal my wallet knowing very well the next day I wanted sausage McMuffins before work.

Fuck that bitch. I hate her guts and I will never let her seem Multiverse of Madness with me partially because I haven't seen her in over 10 years. Screw her I hope she never sees that movie. She was Hispanic too. But she couldn't travel to different dimensions. That's a good thing too because she would try to fuck with the different mes and different realities. But those of you with Hispanic girlfriends I think you should start to worry in case they one day gain the power to travel the Multiverse. This could be an ingrained power in Hispanic people so just keep an eye out.

Anyways I don't know what this candy is but it's called oxycodone and it's pretty good so I'll see you on the other side.

Seriously has there ever been an example of woke culture and products translating into more profits?

What are they doing?

I'm sorry, but TLoU2 sold pretty well despite being woke.

I really couldn't give 2 craps about Gina's tweets, she just is not a very good actor, that's why I don't care that she isn't returning.
I still have her Black Series action figure of course.

I don't think many people understand how franchises work nowadays. Usually a bad quality of a movie/game doesn't affect it itself much. Word of mouth is pretty slow given the internet is controlled and manipulated by corporations so people tend to preorder/order tickets on the first week because they think it's a "proven" product. Doctor Strange 2 and TLoU2 succeeded because the first ones were good/decent, the true testament to their quality will be the success or failure of the next installments. There's a reason the Star Wars movies were so slow to start failing despite their fucking awful quality.

If they had descendants on the planet, and it looks like they did, doing it the old fashioned way, I see no reason why they wouldn't do it in vitro for a couple that can't, together, reproduce. Shoot... What about women who can't have kids AND they're straight? Why not?
They didn’t, she was part of the first people on the planet. It was around 8 years after landing and she Wasn’t married for 4. So in that time they found a donor and used medical supplies for IVF treatments and the colony didn’t have a solid defense plan until years later.

It doesn’t matter either way but to rationalize the situation is just as ridiculous and really it was very irresponsible of them to have a baby on a new hostile planet with no defenses. 😳🤣

It is for the Star Wars franchise. Plus they're Disney movies which means they spend hundreds of millions of dollars for marketing and astroturfing in order to attract more gullible manchildren to their terrible products, it's not as if the profit is as big as you think by looking at the budget of the movie.

Yes, of course, Disney expected to make over 2 billion dollars per movie.

Nah mate.

I'd rather watch a Jacky Chan comedy flick with actual decent choreography than Shang-Chi. The movie was way too fake and the third act was just atrocious. The film also prides itself in being rooted in Asian culture, but underneath the shiny Hollywood veneer, there is actually not much of anything. The action had way too much CGI and felt absolutely weightless. Ye olden wire-fu movies from the golden age have much better action scenes than this lifeless computer generated crapfest. If only the stunts, the fight choreography and the editing would have been as impressive as the main actor's ego.

Why would I watch this over any of the Jackie Chan movies honestly?
For me, they tickle different viewing bones. Give me Master Killer, Fist of Legend, the Ip Man franchise, or the first 2 Drunken Masters if I'm in the mood for some classic kung fu choreography. The Raid and OngBak for some SEA martial arts styles. The Raid 2 kitchen fight, and the hallway fight against Bat Man and Hammer Girl are probably my 2 favorite fight scenes of all-time. I think the choreography and camera work are both on point. BUT...sometimes I want to see some fantastical shit. All eventually resort to CG, but not all of them look Marvel good. Shang-Chi danced the line between traditional martial arts and Marvel spectacle. That third act was indeed a bit much, but that's pretty much a Marvel trademark at this point. They show no signs of toning that shit down either, unless you consider the reduced number of skybeams to be progress.

I appreciate that they're going in different directions with this stuff. Let's be honest. Looking at what they did with live-action Mulan, I don't know if there's much of an appetite to see Disney try to actually tackle that HK style of action flick. It's not in their wheelhouse to have the stars taking bumps, and the stuntmen racking up hospital bills. What we'd end up getting from them is a watered-down imposter, which is why I'm ok with Shang-Chi leaning into the fantastic elements at the end, because they're going to have to feature his ring powers more going forward. He's not going to bang with Wanda and Mephisto with martial arts. While many Marvel movies devolve into 3rd act fight fights, the big bads hinted at so far are not brawlers. We're only going to see him beating up fodder and elite mooks with his fists.

Where is the part of "men can have periods"?
I think it is the dude wearing a trans shirt flag saying he uses the ones with wings. I would also say why even have a segment about tampons, with beymax which is for young kids. No reason to even include them.

I don't think she deserved to be fired. But she's not a good actress and Cara Dune wasn't a good character.
While she struggles to act a bit (no different that most of the D+ star wars actors, TBH) the CHARACTER was fascinating to me. A bitter veteran of the rebellion who WASN'T a jedi, fighter pilot, or some high ranking official is an astounding look at "grunt level" narrative very often ignored in Star Wars and could have led to a whole host of stories. I was really hoping for an "Enemy Mine" type episode where she has to work with some stormtroopers for mutual survival, giving us a peek under the bucket at what those guys went through as well.

Plus Gina is one female who can THROW DOWN and I'll over look some acting in favor of someone that can make action more believable. Cutting her from the cast was a big mistake, she could have anchored a spin-off better than the other options IMHO.

It's almost like many of y'all didn't know that preteen girls can go through puberty (thus, having periods)... Not to mention that kids often go to the store with their mothers who are buying their own pads or tampons.

Y'all are daggone puritanical!

"Oh we must never 'expose' kids to stuff many of them will go through in actual life"

This episode seems like it would lessen the stigma of it for preteen girls and boys who don't know jack about female body processes.

I hope you lot don't have daughters.

I have a preteen daughter 11. I still don't want her watching this, I would rather my wife talk to her than a cartoon. It isn't puritanical to want to keep some thing in the family.

I saw cartoons about periods in the early 2000s. That's all fine and dandy, but the insertion of a dude with a trans flag is obvious virtue signaling. It will fly over most kids' and parents' heads so it's not that big a deal to me, but I still dislike this sort of thing.

Get off your high horse and come back to reality.

The issue isn’t the tampons. The issue is the blatant pushing of unscientific, regressive concepts such as the “Men can have periods!” Which is blatantly trying to be pushed in this scene. Remove that element and I and the majority of others would have zero issues with this scene.

See, this is an actual issue. This is what we should fight against. Not the fucking lesbian kiss.

This shit is actually abhorrent.
I believe there is a massive disconnect between what the different parts of the country think that follow different forms of media. What you call abhorrent is completely harmless. I'm watching the clip, wondering what the hell I'm supposed to be seeing, and I just don't see anything strange outside of an inflatable, sentient robot. That's the only thing the kids are going to notice. Kids are capable of processing this stuff a lot better than adults. I'd wager this content is not suitable for some fragile adults, rather than kids who won't care.

Umm... I am still wondering where you're getting "men can have periods"

I'm a born male... And I've had to BUY pads and tampons for my ex when we were together. And until someone said something, I wouldn't have thought the shirt is the trans flag. So to ME, and possibly any kid watching, those are two men buying them for their wives.

Y'all projecting SO HARD!

If you can’t see how dangerous it is trying to normalize regressive anti-scientific concepts, then you are a lost cause.

So is this iwhat being gaslit feels like?

What were you taught at the age of 11 that turned you into this? Maybe that's what you should be worried about your daughter ingesting?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I would just rather have cartoons be goofy and silly things for kids instead of vehicles to "educate" them about bodily function. Health class in school, sure fine talk about that stuff, but in a kids cartoon seems a weird place for period talk.

That's not rapidly, that's a pretty standard drop.

*EDIT*
I should mention it's pretty standard for the industry, not necessarily for Pixar itself.

A 60% drop on the second weekend is pretty standard for large tent pole releases that make >$100million opening weekend, it's not a standard drop for the genre at all. The most recent animated movies have had drops of;

Bad Guys - 32
Sing 2 - 10
Encanto - 52
Raya - 33
Boss Baby 2 - 48

Then you look at the movies before covid;

Toy Story 4 - 51 (this was with a huge opening too)
Incredibles 2 - 56 (also a huge opening)
Frozen 2 - 34
Boss Baby - 48
How to train your Dragon 3 - 45

The drop for Lightyear is huge, especially for the genre. People were saying Encanto bombed, Lightyear is a much more significant bomb and at a time when way more people are going to the theatre.

It's kinda neat to see a corpo-media empire crumble. They might still bounce back but seems like it will be hard to get back to the status many describe as "magic".

I know that when they started coming out with straight to video sequels back in the day, those were considered something like "cheap disney" or maybe "filler disney" or something like that. Now with disney plus, the movies are all made for tv, in a manner of speaking. They debut in theatres but it's known that they will end up on your sub. Spending $100 to take 3 kids to a disney movie with popcorn and candy is a little less justifiable when you could go out and do something else while you wait a few months to watch the movie at home.

I don't know if there is any good way to measure devaluation of product. I'm sure it's different for different companies. I can beleive disney being particularly succeptible, with the magic and all. That's surely a hard status to maintain. There's clearly a multitude of reasons but the perception of being untouchable or premium seems to be falling off and they look more like a typical media monster.
