Divinity: Original Sin 2 |OT| Dragons & Dungeon Mastering

Put about 4 hours in. Absolutely love it. Every single thing is better than the first so far

Pretty much exactly where I am. 4 hours in, better than the original in every way.

I was gonna write some first impressions but really this game surpasses the original in every single way. Sure this game has minor problems like auto hotbar adding, inventory sort being reset when loading, a CTD and limited character appearance customisation options - but other than that this is just... the best CRPG out there right now.

I picked an origin character as my player character, was that a mistake if I think they are interesting? I obviously miss out of dialogue and maybe even their side quest, is that right?

Am downloading the game now. Any tips for a first playthrough and for someone who hasn't played a lot of turn based games? Though RPGs are my favorite genre, so I got that going for me lol

I wanna jump in blind and just do my character like I want, but don't want to be stuck like 20 hours in because of my build

...'armor business'

I agree. Though I think armor is a good idea in general (CC is simply too strong in the previous game) but it needs some hard counters. Even a couple spells or abilities that do double damage to armor (or are basically useless against HP) would feel appropriate.

..

Play on "explorer" difficulty. The normal setting, classic, is no pushover even for people who know the first game pretty well.

Absolutely not a mistake. You get to determine how their story unfolds, and there are several unique encounters/dialogues that only happen if you're the main character with that background.

Holy shit, am I doing something wrong or are you not meant to venture into the
Barricaded cave in fort joy that's inside the cave where all the collar people are staying?

I encounter like 3 giant frogs in there that absolutely melt my face with their long range elemental attacks

Thank you. I have no problem playing on an easier difficulty, but will I just cruise through the game then without any challenge?

I'm a veteran of the first game and I've actually died a couple times on Explorer.. mostly because I was being too cocky but it happened. You can also set the difficulty up to classic mid-game I believe - you can! Except from Tactician/Honor mode, you're stuck with that one if you pick it.

After restarting over and over...I finally went with:

- Custom Elf aero/hydro specialist
- Custom Dwarf shapeshifter/scoundrel/general mechanic abuser
- 2 npcs

And now, I am avoiding all combat and stealing everything. Everything. My god the pickpocketing is easy to abuse.

thanks a lot, I'll keep being the red prince then

now I need to think about my party.
4 just seems to be too few.
I want a wizard, a necromancer, a healer, a ranged and a tank :(
is a dedicated healer necessary or is it good enough if you just have several offspec healers?

If you find it too easy you can change the difficulty at any time.

Thank you both. Going to play on explorer and get a feel for the combat. I'll bet I get my ass kicked anyway lol

Man the companions are really well done. Having a tough choice deciding between them.

It's pretty amazing so far. I'm still figuring out how to complete very simple, basic quests on the island and the attention to detail is already making my head spin. Like, some guard asshole killed my cat "companion" with a bow and I'm still trying to figure out why, and if it will matter somehow, and I love it. Reminds me of Ultima VII like no game has before (didn't play DOS1).

Now to find a goddamn shovel.

Did you ever play the original Divine Divnity (not OS1)? I remember the first time I played it all that would go through my head was "Holy shit, I'm playing Ultima 7 Part 3!" Larian loves Ultima and I love them for it. Wish more devs were influenced by Ultima.

From my limited experience with Act 1 on Classic and the previous game - A dedicated healer is 100% not necessary, or even really possible. There are only a few healing spells in the game (huntsman and hydro skills) and they have longer cooldowns. Having a healing spell on two of your characters, just a single skillpoint investment, should be perfectly fine.

Man Pet pal is the fucking best.

It was incredible in Neverwinter Nights and it remains incredible now!
It wasn't a talent in NWN, just Rangers and Druids could naturally talk to animals

Was NWN the first game to do something like that? I can't remember otherwise...

edit:
Since 2 seems to be immproved in every way, is it worth it to power through and try to beat the first one? Or can I just skip it and go to 2..

IMO you can skip it. So far, I'm liking the story/characters significantly more than the first game. We'll have to wait and see how it all works out though when more people start finishing it.

Question before I pick this up:

I loved a lot of what I played in Divinity: Original Sin. But I got burnt out on it after the first town and the big boss fight around then.

Since 2 seems to be immproved in every way, is it worth it to power through and try to beat the first one? Or can I just skip it and go to 2.

I hated the story in 1 as well (main plot, not side quests).

You can always come back later if you are stuck.
I snuck Ifan and Sebille in first and moved Ifan to high ground and Sebille close to the electric frog for backstabbing then initiated the fight with the Red Prince and it was much easier afterwards.

Do Skill Scrolls go somewhere special? I just bought one from a vendor and I stole one from another character earlier and I can't find them in my inventory for the life of me.

So I never played the first game. How much do you have to manage the other characters in your party? Does the computer handle them decently so I'm not having to give them orders consistently or is that now how it's best played? I'm not a huge fan of that stuff, rather do my own thing and let the computer manage their actions.

I don't mind outfitting them with gear, etc. but during battles I'd like the computer to handle skills and the like.

Starting my third character and picked Sebille this time around. Noticed a nice little touch on the boat:
If you sneak and take a piece of meat of the murder victim and use the elven ability to eat it to gain access to the victim's memories, you can tell the investigator about it.
[not a real spoiler but a minor thing that showcases the reactivity of the game]

Game 100% crashes when I get back inside the town in fort joy. No matter if I use the waypoint or go in manually. Too bad I was level 8. Not touching this until they fix it. Unacceptable to launch like this.

Its turned based, you control all their actions. Its not rtwp, which is very tedious in moment to moment gameplay.

So after playing a bit, does anyone else wish the party, as a whole, were involved in the dialogue with npc's?

It feels strange that in order to get any unique-character dialogue with npc's it only applies to your specific party member that you have selected when you initiate the conversation.

For example, I talked to an npc soldier that has a unique dialogue choice with Ifran, however since I had my main character selected I simply don't get that choice.

So I go out, then select Ifran and talk to the same npc and now I can see the unique Ifran conversation.

This is something that should all be together regardless of who you have selected to start the conversation imo.

So when you start talking to an npc it'd have a list of all normal dialogue and then it'd have unique party member dialogue that you can use.

Ah okay. Think I'll watch some streams to get a better idea of how the battles flow. They always seemed very time consuming in past games, maybe this is different.

Not really feeling the pseudo Mass Effect 2-3 system they have going on with armor in this game. It effectively neuters CC in such a huge way that it goes from "really strong" to "almost pointless" for the player. Yet the enemies, especially melee have no problem blasting through the protections of my casters to knock them down in a single action. It takes me however 3-4 total actions to even get CC to work, and it usually only lasts for 1-2 turns.

That would be fine if direct damage had been buffed to compensate, but because of the layer system, it's even weaker than it was in the previous game. This is just on classic. I can't imagine how annoying it will be on tactician.

Yeah this has been kind of annoying. Shooting someone with fire only for them to not get burnt because of their random ass magic shield doesn't feel good.

Perhaps the dynamic balances out a bit once we're a higher level?

Just one question before I decide on a character (these choices are overwhelming, in a good way!)

Does it matter what build preset I choose with a origin character? I've read about some default classes for these origin characters

Tactician difficulty, Lv 4 went throught Fort Joy part, and now slowly killing off every magister now before moving through the swamps. I really like the early balance and difficulty so far.

MC: Ilfan - Dual-wield daggers (Scoundrel/Necromancy with Warfare/Huntsman 1)
Fane - Conjurer (Wand+Shield, Summon, Pyro, Geo)
Lohse - Enchanter (Aero, Hydro)
Beast - Knight (Two-handed weapon, Warfare/Geo)

The only thing which makes me sad is that I won't be utilizing one-handed STR weapons and Bows/Crossbows. Nor do I have an Elf in my party. But there's always a 2nd playthrough plus a co-op session is also planned.

For anyone further in, is there a worthwhile benefit of getting the companions to talk to each other? IE to extract further info or whether they have particular dialogue together to learn more about them that I might miss if I don't get them to talk together?

Now that I’ve seen the game patched a few times, which party member still starts with Pet Pal? I’m trying to decide if I need to put it on my main character (Fane) or if I’ll just use someone else.

Anyone else not able to play co-op? Me and friend started a 2 player game yesterday but now he can't join me... I made sure to set the connection setting to allow a friend to join but he gets a connection failed message when he tries to join. Neither of us is able to connect to random games too...

You sure you're on the same version?

Just came across a random NPC named Ralvo, and I swear to god he sounds exactly like Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow.

I did that too early on at level 2. It was pretty much bullshit at that level, but I finally beat them after twenty minutes of retries.

Ifan at least starts with it. Don't know about Sebille, Lohse or Beast.

Seems like the patch that just came out is giving people connection issues in multiplayer.

I restarted to near full physical damage team because of this. Game feels way easier now and fights end like twice as fast.

The problem has been around since the game went live for me. It makes actually starting the game take way longer than it needs to, because it wastes about 45s to time out and let me know I cannot connect. Then the game actually launches.

I don't doubt that at all. Once I got
the bow for Ifan from his "contact", the game became way easier since it does both physical and piercing (ignores physical armors).
The armor system is kind of shit if you have any weapons that are split damage too (hello Dark Souls). If you're going physical, at least early on you want to stay 100% physical damage and not use anything with elemental damage on top of it, unless that elemental is just additional compared to what you could have used otherwise.

Won't be surprised at all when the EE version is released with a major balance overhaul.

Im going to start my single player file soon after playing nearly 10 hours of co-op.
Is there a general consensus on talents yet? Which ones are great early, better late and which are newb traps/bad?

Am I just awful?

I feel like I am burning through at least one or two resurrection scrolls every fight, some goes well, but most just horribly wrong. The enemies can tank TONS compared to me (even though we are the same level), they are more numerous than me, have lots of evil abilities. And this is the "Normal" difficulty level.

I am soon at a point where if one of my companions dies, I can't ress them and continue.
