Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?

I'm going to wait and see what the NA and EU numbers are before being too celebratory. If it bombs there, a good performance in Japan isn't going to matter as much. Not that I think it will, just remaining cautious

When we are gatting NPD numbers for this game, May or Jun report?

Should be in the May report since it released at the end of May, numbers will only be based on launch week though so if it charts highly that would defo go down as a success.

Heck 144k in Japan is already pretty impressive for a new IP on WiiU.

Likely the June report depending on when the end point for the May report is. The game released on May 29th in North America. It would have had that Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in May.

I believe it will only get like 3 days in the next NPD. We'll have to wait till we get June's numbers for a good view on the sales in the US

Any more anecdotal evidence? At least on the Internet, this seems to be crazy popular.
We know that it's a for-sure hit in Japan (not surprising judging by the number of Japanese players online). The West likely isn't too far behind, but we don't have any specific numbers to be sure about that. Even with the May numbers coming out soon, the game was only out for 3 days in May.

Lol, that doesn't sound very good.

If you look at those games and realize a brand new ip is hanging up there close to proven beloved franchise, I'd say that's pretty good

Plus, you need to remember that, of all territories, UK is one of Nintendo's worst, as far as I know.

5th best debut for a new franchise on a Nintendo console is pretty damn good. Specially if you consider that the other 4 are probably Mario Kart, Smash and Mario games.

Did Wonderful 101 sell more than 200k? If not, a lot of people in this thread should be eating rotten squid by now, as Splatoon passed the 200k mark in Japan. Is that good? Yes, it is.

I'm not sure yet. I'm having a good time with Splatoon, but I think it has a lot of flaws (I'd rate it a 7 or 7.5). As it's standing right now, I don't think it's the next major Nintendo IP. Though a potential Splatoon 2 (which I think is very likely to happen) can iron all these flaws out and be a lot better, and thus be the next major Nintendo IP as far as I'm concerned.

Essentially the same thing happened with Pikmin (2nd iteration is where it got the most praise), but unlike even that game, Splatoon is getting an even wider appeal just from its debut alone.

I still don't get what Nintendo was doing with Wonderful 101. It was their game and IP. They had Platinum make the game. Why they handled it the way they did makes no sense.

W101's LTD for North America was 104k a couple of months ago. Worldwide is probably not much more than that

People really seem to underestimate how badly Wonderful 101 did...As much as it pains me.

Well. Splatoon has already outsold the Japanese + US LTD of Wonderful 101 in 4 days

Creamsugar has it at 104K in the April 2015 NPD thread. (That´s after price cuts etc.)

So probably 175-200k worldwide.

So with Japan at 200k and Europe at +50k I don't think it'd be unreasonable to assume that US must have pulled better numbers. I'm convinced that it has to be at around 500k worldwide now.

Ah, that's much better than I expected, even if most of those sales were probably heavily discounted.

How big was the drop off? Is it Hollywood -60% plunge or significantly stronger than that?

56% drop, supply still constrained, Wii U hardware is up week over week again. Splatoon has given the Wii U a bigger bump in sales than either Mario Kart 8 or Smash.

Japan loves the shit out of this game, not sure about NA or EU.

In light of Hyrule Warriors getting a portable port, do you think we'll see a 3DS version/port of this game?

It's taking off faster than anyone could have ever predicted, a scaled-down port would make sense.

I think we'll see something Splatoon-related at some point, but it could be too late in the game for the 3DS to see a major effort, and I'd think they'd want to hold off on it until the handheld aspect of NX is ready for prime time to have a bigger splash, no pun intended.

One port of a Warriors game by Tecmo and now a bunch of people online are calling for Wii U ports.

There's still a huge power gap between the consoles. The Vita didn't get a port of Black Ops 2 and that was much more powerful than 3DS.

Besides Splatoon requires a second analog stick. Something not available on the vast majority of 3DS's. Touchscreen aiming isn't possible become the game requires access to two buttons (Squid and shoot) at all times. This doesn't even count secondary weapons and jump.

Also even Kid Icarus only had 6 players total. How would the 3DS handle a players with ink being spread constantly.

It's not happening. The only possibility is a spinoff title and it probably isn't worth it to begin development right now when that time could be put in to the next handheld.
