OTHER PROGRAMMING

The BBC has a whole slate of programming during November to celebrate the anniversary. Check your local listing for your area [BBC America]. Some highlights:

An Adventure in Space and Time
An-Adventure-In-Time-And-Space-Bradley.png

21 November 2013, BBC Two, 9pm | 22 November 2012 9pm EST, BBC America.

This special one-off drama travels back in time to 1963 to see how Doctor Who was first brought to the screen.
Actor William Hartnell felt trapped by a succession of hard-man roles. Wannabe producer Verity Lambert was frustrated by the TV industry’s glass ceiling. Both of them were to find unlikely hope and unexpected challenges in the form of a Saturday tea-time drama, time travel and monsters!
Allied with a team of brilliant people, they went on to create the longest-running science fiction series ever, now celebrating its 50th anniversary.
An Adventure In Space And Time stars David Bradley (William Hartnell); Jessica Raine (Verity Lambert); Sacha Dhawan (Waris Hussein) and Brian Cox (Sydney Newman). It is written by Mark Gatiss and directed by Terry McDonough.

The Science of Doctor Who with Brian Cox
science-of-doctor-who-Brian-Cox.jpg

14 November 2013, BBC Two, 9pm | 18 November 2012 10pm EST BBC America

For one night only, Professor Brian Cox explores the universe of the world’s favourite Time Lord, Doctor Who. Brian takes an audience, with the help of celebrity guests, on a journey into the wonderful universe of The Doctor, in a specially recorded programme from the lecture theatre of the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Brian reveals the science behind the spectacle and explains the physics that allows Doctor Who to travel through space and time.

The Culture Show presents Me, You And Doctor Who

November 22nd, BBC Two, 9.30pm
Lifelong fan Matthew Sweet explores the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama, arguing that it’s one of the most important cultural artefacts of modern Britain. Put simply, Doctor Who matters. He’ll examine how the show has become a cultural force in its own right and tell the stories of some of the unsung cultural heroes, who pioneered its innovative music, design and storytelling.

What is Doctor Who?
Check out Mr. Sam's great OP for Series 7 thread for a good overview (and thanks for the FAQ banner!)

Will the Day of the Doctor have my favourite Classic Doctor/companion/unlimited rice pudding ?
BBC have pretty much stated Christopher Eccleston will not be coming back.
All 20th century Doctors who are still with us have stated that they have not been asked to reprise their roles. Moffat does like to spring surprises in his episodes, but keep expectations low...

Here is what was posted...

Pic

Again, I'm not bothered, and I'd have seen that pic anyway, but please think about the more sensitive people in the thread with regards to spoilers when posting non BBC sanctioned filming pics. We had this not ten pages ago, with some people getting upset, so please link with a spoiler note rather than just drop the pics, as inevitably somebody is going to get upset.

Though I much prefer the new costume, I'm disappointed it isn't the tweed jacket for the 50th. Was hoping for Brown Suit 10/Tweed 11 for the sort of 'default' costumes in that ep.
It's brown suit 10, at least, we've seen. More proof it isn't meta crisis but the real 10th at some point during Series 2.

So, based off those pics and the past couple of days filming:
A lot of UNIT soldiers, and the past two days filming have had an unknown scientist-looking character in a lab coat wearing a very Tom Baker scarf. Hmm.

EDIT: Fair play to Smith doing this stunt. Strapped in, obviously, but, christ. Spoilers, obv: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYGRYzK08Yg Amazed the BBC, the most neurotic production place of all time, who wouldn't even let them actually drive the car in Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes, let him do this.

Some dialogue from today's filming. Spoilers sweetie:

Kate: "Doctor, may I extend the official apologies of UNIT."
Doctor: "Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, a word of advice. As I'm sure your father would have told you, I don't like being picked up!"
Kate: "I'm acting on instructions direct from the throne. Sealed orders from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the First."
Doctor: "Oh, I see."

She then indicates the National Gallery, and they head off in that direction. Which I assume is where the paintings come in...

Official BBC release: An intelligence report from Strax… And a news item from Trafalgar Square with Matt Smith!

My goal is to catch up on Doctor Who before this airs. I'm almost to the end of David Tennant's tenure. I'm actually a bit disappointed that Christopher Eccleston isn't on board for the 50th. I really liked his portrayal of The Doctor.

I haven't seen much of classic Who, but I'm hoping this episode has a classic Doctor or two in it. It wouldn't be a 50th anniversary without them.

Hoping it will be good, did not like the last two specials all too much, but hoping everyone that is involved is going all out for this.

I'm really surprised so far by the lack of returning Doctors/assistants. Hopefully the BBC is keeping some things top secret.

As am I. I would've expected at least McGann for sure. But maybe there were some internal forces pushing for only modern Doctors, and once Eccleston turned them down that just left them with Tennant and Smith.

I'd love to see McGann, if only to finally give him a proper debut. Not sure which one I'd like to see:

TV movie Doctor:

8th-doc.jpg

Or radio play Doctor:

I like the second one, since it bridges him closer to the 9th Doctor and it looks generally badass. The first one is his "default" look, though.

Why not a cobination of both?

Hair wise, yeah.

That's one step closer to seeing a regeneration scene from 8th to 9th.
Out of millions of steps.

Seeing as Eccleston isn't going to make it, maybe McGann can play the Ninth as well!

...from the forehead up.

They should do whatever they normally do in TV when an actor won't come back to film their final scene-just show a car going off a cliff.

That's a joke by the way.

From the time this was announced until now, my wants for this show have shifted. I don't mind not seeing any of the other doctors, or any of the other companions. Really don't.

So long as McGann is in it.

In fact, I think my "Shoot for the moon/it'll never happen you fool" hope is that we'll get some sort of flashback, and we'll finally see 8 regenerate into 9.

Again - I KNOW this is a ridiculous hope. It will likely remain unfulfilled. But I'd like it.

I constantly change my mind on whether or not I want to see 8 regenerate to 9.

I want to see it finally happen, but I also like just having it implied. 8th Doctor adventures in various media aside, I think he's an untapped well of potential for TV stories, I think.

That's a joke by the way.

They should do it Police Squad! style, with a "guest starring Paul McGann!" during the credits as he chokes on some food and regenerates into Eccleston.

No doubt.

I mean, if I'm gonna shoot for the moon, I'm shooting for the fucking moon here: I'd like this flashback to be sort of a quick-cut montage thing showing McGann as the 8th, falling DURING the timewar, regenerating into Eccleston as the 9th (Born in War), and Eccleston closing the deal and running shortly thereafter.

2 minutes tops. It could be done.

It'll never happen. I KNOW THIS. I know it won't happen. But that's the brass ring, for me.

Given that he's still getting used to his appearance in "Rose", it's clear whatever the 8th Doctor does to end the Time War ends up forcing him to regenerate also.

The chain of events is likely: "the deed" > run to TARDIS > escape Gallifrey/the Time War > regenerate > land on Earth in 2005.

Yeah. Basically, I'm getting into fanfic territory here, but I always imagined it less of "McGann ends the timewar, regenerates into Eccleston, who runs off" but more of "McGann hesitates to end the timewar at the critical moment, gets killed, regenerates into Eccleston, who has NO PROBLEMS ending it, and does."

Yeah, I suppose that's a way of looking at it. Guess we'll never know for sure, but that does sound pretty cool.

I'd love for them to elaborate on the 8-9 regeneration, but there's no way they can do it well without Eccleston on board.

Or I mean... they could have 10 & 11 meeting 8, and then afterwards 10 and 11 have a group reminiscing about 8's regeneration.

Basically, the only thing keeping this foolhardy hope foolish and hardy is the knowledge that MOFFAT LIES.

Like, straight up, he lies, and he asks people to lie for him.

It's highly unlikely he's doing that now, but the knowledge that he HAS done it keeps this guttering candle from going all the way out. But I'm 99.95% sure I'm not going to get what I want.

But that 0.05%, man.

Generally speaking the BBC itself is pretty skittish about putting out statements that aren't the truth as it can be used against them. They work for the taxpayer, so to lie to the public is against their terms: ie, when asked during Series 1 if Eccleston was leaving, the BBC chose to confirm it rather than dodge or deny.

Moffat is one man, especially mid-interview or at a panel, but the fact the Eccleston statement came from BBC PR means it is almost certainly not a misdirection.

Given that he's still getting used to his appearance in "Rose", it's clear whatever the 8th Doctor does to end the Time War ends up forcing him to regenerate also.

Who knows, really? I think by the point of "Rose" he's been rattling around post-war for a little bit purely based on how he talks about it. He makes it sound distant but painful. He doesn't fall into the events of 'Rose' - when we meet him he's involved, seeking stuff out, so I think after the war in his guilt and sadness he throws himself into being a 'problem fixer.' We see the 9th Doctor at JFK's assassination, with a family due to go on the Titanic etc too, remember.

I look in the mirror sometimes and mentally (and sometimes out loud...) comment on my own appearance, and I've had this face for 24 years. Just because he comments on his ears doesn't mean the regeneration is recent - he just happens to be in front of a mirror, and unlike the 10th Doctor he's pretty unlikely, I think, to seek one out and preen in front of it.

I KNOW THIS.

Let me have my 0.05%, man. It's such a tiny thing. So weak and fragile. Let me hold it a little bit longer. I'll bury it in a cigar box later, when the time is right. Don't grind your heel into its tender heart just yet. :)

Fair enough. I did think that he seemed fairly "in it"- normal Doctor mode, looking for trouble- but the comment about his appearance threw me off.

Oh, and I totally forget about the pictures of him in the past. That means I'm definitely wrong... gee, if Rose wasn't so painful to watch now, maybe I'd have remembered that. :p

That Zygon looks more funny than terrifying, gonna be rather hard for a non Who viewer to take it seriously.

Are any middle east countries going to show this movie in theatres btw?

Don't forget that as well as the tv 50th anniversary special, Big Finish have announced their multi doc release starring doctors 4-8 anyway.

Cheers
