I think I remember reading that BBC America is paying for the opening two-parter, so that should have freed up some budget for the later stuff.

I dunno; Nickiepoo worked on/works with the people that do some of the effects on Who. I'm leaning towards trusting his nondescript laughter.

Oh, well if the budgets haven't shifted (I remember Mr Moffat saying something to that effect for series 5), then they should be commended!

This was retconned. A recent episode of Sarah Jane Adventures dealt with it with a throwaway line about how he can regenerate 507 times.
It was written by RTD which means it was stupid enough to just completely ignore.

Ok perhaps I got a little carried away, but it certainly feels light years ahead of 'same old warehouse' constraints.

Oh, yeah, no doubt about that, the budget has increased massively across the board (just compare to Ecclestons first episode, remember that bin? Yeesh). But you'll always get people who work in post production talking about what would be possible with just a bit more money because they're always pushed right up against the wall in terms of time/manpower/equipment.
So the notion that the shackles ever come off amused me :(

There were budget cuts when they were making Series 5 - as I watched the series, I kept wondering when the cuts would show 'on screen' so to speak, but visually it was more impressive than any previous series in my view.

Also Doctor Who in HD is gorgeous (BBC America isn't carried in HD here, but the episodes are on Comcast On Demand HD, and I have the Series 5 blu-rays).

The Lodger, but yeah, overall it was the most visually impressive series yet by quite a bit.

Amy's Choice was simultaneously the best and worst looking episode. The frozen Tardis (done with practical effects, obviously) looked awesome but the eyes-in-mouths and sand effects were... questionable.

So is bbc america finally on the ball and we'll get the new who episodes same day as the motherland or are we still going to have some kind of two week delay nonsense?

Space in Canada also announced April 23rd for their start date. I assume they will stay current with the BBC broadcasts. It would be crazy not to.

wow there are some pretty creepy
Silents
close-ups at the end of that trailer... I'm excited by the scarier tone of the trailers so far as that's usually my favourite side of doctor who.

Can't wait. Sadly I'll probably be swamped with finals work for the first two weeks of the show. Going to have to budget time.

bad gameplay lol

Actually, in the episode itself, he said "there's no limit" to the number of times he can regenerate. I was waiting for the "507 times" line, since it was mentioned in that article on whatever website it was that first broke the news, but it never came.

So just to make this clear:

The Doctor's Daughter (who is The Doctor's daughter) and The Doctor have had a daughter. The Doctor's Daughter's daughter's father is The Doctor.

After typing Daughter so much it's made the word seem a bit weird.

The Doctor's Daughter is The Doctor's Granddaughter.

No! The Doctor's Daughter is The Doctor's daughter. The Doctor's daughter is The Doctor's granddaughter.

Hope that clears it up.

Is that happening again this season?

Not so far, but we're generally credited as a department (boo) so you can tell from ep to ep.

One thing that does make me a bit sad in the who-verse is that they never show off any of the rejected concept art. Some of the creature briefs are vague enough that there's a huge variance in the designs. The da vinci creature was originally a sort of cloaked 4-legged bio-mechanical creature surrounded by crows, for example.

In that same episode the painted version of the monster is the concept art that was used to develop the creature in 3D.
