Speculation : She IS the Doctor.

They could do all sorts of crazy things, but this way the Doctor would know how he is going to die which would be.... interesting.

Seriously though, I couldn't be more excited for the new season.

I hope that she is a future regeneration of the Doctor, that would be really cool. The suggestion that she is the doctor's wife has been telegraphed since Silence in the Library.

I've not been this excited about a TV show in general since the trailer for Season 5, or probably Lost Season 3. Grew up with Tom Baker as my doctor (in the UK), and never really watched new Who since it came back until Matt Smith. I'm now heavily abusing Netflix to catch up on everything I've missed - the recommended Episodes list in the OP was great.

While we're on the subject of Tom Baker (and 70's Sci-fi in general), I loved Blakes 7, and that was on a par with Doctor Who for me then.

I don't think they'll make her be the Doctor. That seems far too constricting a choice on future developments. Not to mention it means we actually, genuinely, see how the Doctor will die his last death. Which... well, I don't think Moffat has the hubris to do that.

Now, she might use the same outfit in multiple episodes, but Amy's wearing that checked shirt a *lot*. It may be that all checked shirt episodes are the same one. And they seem to include:

The one set outside in the desert (the first episode?)
The one with the yellow explosion in the tardis
The one at the end of the trailer with the apparent shooting

If those are all the same episode...

The first two episodes are a two-parter, and we know that the desert stuff is from that. It's possible that all of the checkered-shirt stuff is from the first two episodes.

I think the big series 5 trailer focused on stuff from the first few episodes, so it wouldn't be that surprising to see that here too. Still, that would be a crazy series opener.

Wait...River saw the Doctor die permanently? As in no regenerations?

Other way around. The Doctor saw River die. And then put her brain in a computer.

So if she's the Doctor, we've seen the Doctor's final death. Barring a few seasons of "The Doctor In the Computer."

No we saw how RIVER died permanently. So if River's the Doctor that means we know how the Doctor died permanently. Which means if the Doctor finds out River's the Doctor then the Doctor knows how the Doctor died permanently.

PS. That "fear me" line is the most gangsta shit

Wacky theory: She's Romana, who used a malfunctioning Chameleon Arch to escape the Time War (since, like, *everyone* else did); ended up permanently human, but retaining Time Lord memories.

I dunno now that I think about it... it would be pretty sweet if they did have the hubris to make her The Doctor considering how she ended up.

On the other hand, would take a bit of the future mystery wind out of the show's sails.

I definitely don't think she's The Doctor though

I kind of liked the idea that she's the heart of the TARDIS.
Since it's just idle speculation, how about this idea: she's the heart of the TARDIS from the Lodger.

Having watched the trailer more times than I can count, it looks like the part where River's kissing the Doctor is when she's being put in jail.

And goodness, I can't wait the new episodes.

It doesn't mean that she has to be the next regeneration, or the one after that - she could be the 28th doctor, which will give the BBC plenty of time to fill in the story from 11th to 27th!

I've heard or read somewhere that the doctor can only regenerate 13 times. This true?

It was established long ago, but they'll likely either ignore it, or do some throwaway episode (or even just a line) to undo it.

LTTP here, I did not even know a trailer aired, but wow!

Any word on if someone is making avatars from that trailer?.

I would not mind making some, although the position of that big BBC One logo screws up a lot of decent possible avatars.

If you want something specific I don't mind trying. BBC were nice enough to put up the trailer in 1080p, so at least there is good quality video to work with.

This was retconned. A recent episode of Sarah Jane Adventures dealt with it with a throwaway line about how he can regenerate 507 times.

Good writing could allow for some of the lost treasures of Gallifrey to create a bypass on the regeneration limitations. That said, the Matrix itself, or similar technology could potentially allow River's death to be understood completely differently.

I happen to think that the most direct approach with who she is would work the best:
1. Just a lady who got wrapped up in the Doctor's life.
2. The Doctor's Wife
3. A Time Lord

I'd personally love to see more exploration of the Time Agency itself if the show is unwilling to explore more of the Time Lords. This would give a chance to flesh out Captain Jack's story as well as I doubt Torchwood will ever move beyond it's modus operandi.

I don't think that was a retcon so much as a joke on people's constant harping on the question. The number was so ridiculously non-specific and the line so clearly a throw-away that I don't think it amounts to a hill of beans.

They will never address it directly because, frankly, it would be incredibly boring and dumb to come up with an excuse for a problem most people aren't even aware they have. It's just not worth it.

And they sure as hell won't go with it for obvious reasons. At least, I hope they're obvious.

Watched the trailer at work, no sound.

Holy balls, I need to get home so I can watch with sound, because that was amazing. <3

Absolutely love the trailer. As a fan from series 1 episode 1 of new Who when it first came on in 2005 (anybody remember the outcry when the beeb accidently clipped sound from Graham Norton during the mannequin scene?), I've been accustomed to the shows stories themselves being slightly inhibited by the limits of the budgets and sets.

Seeing this trailer, camera swooping over a Utah desert, a broad vivid shot of a vast alien world to the sound of wonderful choir led music, is quite overwhelming viewing. It genuinely adds that extra wonder and opens the scope to where the story arc might go next - free of its previous budget and resource shackles. A mark of its success and its value to the beeb as an iconic show, no doubt.

Bring on Britains best family sci-fi/fantastical drama for another series, it looks like it'll be quite delectable!

Man the new trailer got me so hyped I finally bought the Series Five OST. Thirty tracks in I haven't found a single song I don't like. Murray Gold <3

Had the file open, so a few other avatars (they are cropped above that nasty BBC One logo)

Disgruntled clown, you are mine.
I think the clown would work much better without animation. Lame with the River one.

And something I didn't realize until going through the "Who else hates Pony avatars" is that the Doctor Who avatars are the second or third most hated set of avatars on GAF. Community is close to it.

Who said that? Unless I missed I'm the only one who compared the Who avatars to Pony avatars as an example of community avatars, and I have no problems with either.

Hating on the Doctor Who and Community avatars seemed to come up a few times in that thread. Of course, My Little Pony avatars are the most hated. And anime and Korean girl ones came up a few times.

I was shocked at the Who hate. Community was known because of last year.

EDIT: Maybe I just jumbled all the bullshit in that thread together. I was reading it late at night. It was just a really dumb thread that had people spewing a lot of senselessness.

I think the Pony avatar haters are just the most vocal.

They are, but I could have sworn I saw Who mentioned a few times in there. Or perhaps it was just someone getting quoted a lot and that is how I kept seeing Who.

WhoGAF is so small (avatar wise) I dont see how it could bother people.

EDIT: Of course, before I came up with the idea of my current Doctor Who Bone, I thought of making one of Phoney Bone riding a pony just for a laugh. But the Doctor wins. He always wins.

Also, what was with Community avatars? I assume they were from the show Community? I totally missed out on whatever hate there was on that, I never even noticed them.

You do know there is a Doctor Who pony in the show, right?

Community avatars (from the show) were rampant last year on GAF. Lots of people with animated avatars (most needlessly so), and many kept changing them weekly, so there it looked like there was a lot more than there were. It just felt like the avatars, pics from it, and talk of the show infested many other discussions.

The sad thing is that it all lead to many on GAF hating the show because they associated it with the poster's that they didn't like. The show was fantastic the first year, and is still great this year (but not as good in my opinion). Unfortunately also, many fans of it are very overzealous in their love and defense of the show.

I only watched a few minutes of the show, but am going to try more because of the creators of it being from Powerpuff Girls. But knowing there is a Who pony is just cool.

Just watched the trailer... damn.

I probably should just fall off of gaf until GoT and this starts.
Oh, it will be a geeky two weeks in the US.

April 12th: Incredibles on Blu Ray
April 15th: Scream 4
April 17th: Game of Thrones
April 23rd: Doctor Who

My body (and my wife's) is ready.
Of course, I am the one more excited for Game of Thrones. She is more excited for Who than I am.

They already have, in the SJA episode which had Matt Smith guesting in it (Death of the Doctor? I'm really out of date with SJA, so might be misremembering)

Graham Norton needs to *actually* guest on the show, I think.

It genuinely adds that extra wonder and opens the scope to where the story arc might go next - free of its previous budget and resource shackles

I don't think it *is* free of said shackles... they're just *really* good at getting a heck of a lot for comparatively little.

Damn, I'm hyped now and can't wait for this to come. And I wonder if that voice from the trailer is
Omega?
I've always speculated that he would return and they've been building him up slowly. Would be awesome if so, or it'd be nice if it's someone new to the mythos. Murray always good at his music as usual <3

so your guesses: Who is River Song?

I really don't want her to be an anthropomorphic manifestation of something like the heart of the TARDIS. It would just feel like such a typical science fiction cop out to me. River Song being his wife is too obvious and therefore a bit unlikely. I didn't get the vibe that she was a Time Lord or that she was a relative of the Doctor from her first appearance in "Silence in the Library". To be honest I think they've done a pretty good job of keeping exactly who she is ambiguous so far.

As far as relatives of the Doctor go I kind of wish they would do more with the Doctor's "new" daughter from season 4, Jenny, but there's been no indication that she would be back yet (and the actress playing her being knocked up by 10 certainly doesn't help).
