The only problem I really had was that
I couldn't stop hearing Nixon as Adam Klaus
.

New intro for Confidential? I didn't see much of it last year, so it might be the same one as then, but it felt new and shiny.

Very, very good.

Moffat over-egged the emotion a little early on if you ask me.
Viking pyre was a bit cheese
Otherwise, fantastic. I've missed 'Who.

Glad to see some horror back in the mix. The Eccleston series had a touch of it, but Tennant had next to none.

New team/direction on Confidential.

Don't like the voiceover, mind.

That......was........AWESOME!!

Bloody Cliffhanger! Can't wait till next week!
And Badger's in it!

Does the Doctor beeing 200 years older at the beginning mean that Smith signed a lifetime contract? :)
Well, no, because they can simply have him age off-screen, like with this episodes' opening before we found out what was what.

Clearly that can't be the Doctor's real death even if they have 200 years to play around with as it would mean Matt Smith would have to be last Doctor.

Anyone else feel much more scared seeing the Silents onscreen over any Dalek or Angel?

Sage00 said:
Isn't it something to do with the Silent? She first complained of feeling sick (most likely due to pregnancy) after seeing them, and River was also feeling sick after she saw them in the sewer.[/soiler]
Or maybe her being pregnant will make the forget-me-now be less effective?

The preview was interesting with the Revolution comment implying their "invasion" was successful a long time ago and they control everything. Could help explain the silly suits. They're not wearing Earth clothes, we're wearing their clothes.

Spoiler-free: It was good.

Loved it, brilliant build up for the next episode, and the season in general, without sacrificing an enjoyable episode for exposition

Also pretty sure a mod clarified last year that as soon as it has aired in the UK its fair game, so no need to spoiler details from today. (or have a long drawn out argument yet again)

My mind kind of got blown when
the Doctor died, but then he was alive. I mean, in theory death is avoidable if you can contact yourself like he did?

Also, Delaware was a great character.

Sure, it's just so close US/UK it's worth a mention in the thread or title.

man that was an awesome episode..watching confidential now, looking at the behind the scenes they must be spending a massive amount per episode in this series (ok not US drama comparable but enough for a UK one)

That was seriously good. My god.

I think possibly the creepiest thing about the silent, is that, seemingly, the world is covered in tunnels, but no one ever remembers...

If I remember right, the production people are *really* good at making the money they have go a long way. That said, it does have an above-average budget, but it's a pretty huge earner for the BBC both in terms of overseas sales and merchandising.

And the commercial BBC America threw money at them to do 1 and 2 in the states too.

However, it's slightly sad that they need that, and the domestic BBC can't afford it themselves, going "fuck it, this is our biggest drama, let's make it the best it can be."

with this and being human they are taking it up a level..

Maharg, yes. And this, indeed, is in the OP:

Spoilers concerning episodes not yet aired are to be spoiler tagged. Discussions about episodes that have aired in the UK, however, are not to be spoiler tagged. Not only does this prevent the thread from looking like a giant barcode - which benefits no-one - but it allows members to pick out real spoilers from plot points about episodes they've already seen.

This isn't an effort to be unkind and exclude people, it's simply an issue of practicalities.

Thank you.

going to be Amy's descendant or child??

Damn. I was thinking
the child could be either Amy's child or a young river. I wasn't thinking about the possibility of her being both.

Zenith, the fuck? Quote things properly. You're spoiling everyone.

You mean that thing that just aired on live TV? I should worry about spoiling it for the people who have inexplicably clicked on the discussion thread expressly made for it? No. No, I don't think so.

Now get your ugly black bars out the thread.

Watching this with my dad was a somewhat odd (read: a bit annoying) experience. Not only did he try and guess the dialogue before it was said, but he seemed to think that Doctor Who had got its history wrong and that Lydon B. Johnson was president in 1969 and not Nixon. Technically, he was right... to an extent.

I loved all the little references to Silence in the Library from River. It's weird to think that we now know spoilers about her future.

Also, for a while I was under the assumption that the little girl calling the President directly might have been
The Lodger TARDIS using the same gimmick it used back in, The Lodger.

Alan Moore is suggested as a possible future writer, dear god that would be incredible. In the early days, very early 80s, he did a lot of really ingenious sci-fi shorts, some star wars and I think (VERY early) a couple DW comics. The sheer awesome of him writing a DW episode would probably cause the universe to implode. However, it is also as unlikely as that cosmically devastating event.

Ok, i know nothing about Doctor Who, but i'd really like to give it a shot. Is now a good time to start watching? Since the season premiere is on tonight.

Hmmm...

In the first half of this ep. they sprinkle bits and pieces of dialogue throughout to explain who The Doctor is. I initially thought this wouldn't be a good jumping off point but after seeing this episode it might be ok. They do a lot to bring new viewers up to speed.

Your viewing would be much improved if you at least see Season 5 first though.

In fact, for anyone jumping on who wants to get into it quickly I would recommend seeing:

Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (10th Doctor, Season 4)
End of Time Parts 1 & 2 (I know they are not that great but it links the 10th to the 11th)
All of Season 5.

There is a ton of great 9th and 10th Doctor episodes that you should go back and watch at some point though.

There's also this tidbit from the OP:

Series 1 (27):
Rose
Dalek
The Empty Child [Part 1]
The Doctor Dances [Part 2]
Bad Wolf [Part 1] [Series Finale]
The Parting of the Ways [Part 2]

Series 2 (28):
The Christmas Invasion
Tooth and Claw
The Girl in the Fireplace
The Impossible Planet
The Satan Pit
Army Of Ghosts [Part 1] [Series Finale]
Doomsday [Part 2]

Series 3 (29):
The Runaway Bride
Smith and Jones
Gridlock
42
Human Nature [Part 1]
Family of Blood [Part 2]
Blink
Utopia [Part 1] [Series Finale]
Sound of Drums [Part 2]
Last of the Time Lords [Part 3]

Series 4 (30):
Partners in Crime
Silence in the Library [Part 1]
Forest of the Dead [Part 2]
Midnight
The Stolen Earth [Part 1] [Series Finale]
Journey's End [Part 2]

'The Specials':
The Waters of Mars
The End of Time [2-Parter] [Series Finale]

Series 1, 5, 31, 2010 or Fnarg (31):
The Eleventh Hour
The Beast Below
Time of Angels [Part 1]
Flesh and Stone [Part 2]
Vampires in Venice
Amy's Choice
Vincent and The Doctor
The Lodger
The Pandorica Opens [Part 1] [Series Finale]
The Big Bang [Part 2]

Then we can start talking classic Who.

In fact, for people who watched tonight's episode,
The stuff prior to the Doctor's death felt oddly like Baker's meeting with the Watcher before his own demise in Logopolis. It was private and only something The Doctor understood at the time.

Alternatively, read Neil Gaiman's introduction to Dr. Who* and follow along. If you like it, there's an enormous wealth of great material you can sink your teeth into. The beauty of Dr. Who, unlike most long running series, is that has a very simple, ingenious premise and, because it keeps refreshing itself, is largely baggage free. It's very easy for someone to pick up. It's probably best to start at the beginning of a season mind, so you watch it as it's meant to be presented.

*This is it:

There’s a big blue box. It’s bigger on the inside than the outside. It can go anywhere in space and time, sometimes where it is supposed to go. Something will go wrong, and there’s some bloke called The Doctor who’ll make it all right because he’s awesome. Now sit down, shut up and watch Blink.
Now you're good to go! Watch the season premier and enjoy! :D

(Blink is the name of a very, VERY good episode btw)

Jesus those fucking things are scary when they open their mouths. They make the Daleks look like bitches. Seriously, what the fuck.

Also, did anyone notice that
The Silent only kills a person when that person sees them like three or so times? Maybe the more you see them, the harder it is for them to erase the memory?

Possibly, I was thinking it may be because she kept saying the same thing and then saying "have I said that before" She was remembering a silent whilst not looking at one and had to be killed

Is the "Doctor Who Confidential" series available online somewhere?

I also find it interesting that
We've already seen the moment that River fears the most. The moment she meets him, but he doesn't know who she is.

Maybe thats why she sacrificed herself at the Library? Maybe she didn't want to live anymore?

I don't know if it's because the village pub has just reopened and I'd been there since lunch time, but that did not feel like 45 minutes.

Clearly it should have been a 90 minute episode. Just to explain what the hell.

It is a 90 minute episode. You just don't get to see the second half of it until next week!
