It was never about saving the world, anyway. The Doctor was very narrow-minded with this one- it was all about Clara. So it's a fitting conclusion.

And just to get even darker: Was it about saving Clara, or preserving the puzzle that Clara embodies?

To get freakier still, a theory about Clara:
The various Claras exist solely to lure the Doctor. When one fails, something deploys another. She's probably not aware of this.

Yeah my friend mentioned this while we were watching. Makes it one of the darker episode conclusions.

I think the body would technically still have to be alive for the person to go back.

Also, the people who had no bodies to go back to were at least released from a living hell.

And just to get even darker: Was it about saving Clara, or preserving the puzzle that Clara embodies?

Put it this way: I'm pretty sure if any other companion told him to ask them about joining him in the morning, he'd have buggered off. It's fucking strange that he's actually willing to give a companion some time to think for a change.

I thought about the fact that many people in the cloud died was yet another hand-wave this season where the Doctor saves his companion at the expense of other people (Power of Three being the other).

Have to wonder if it's truly hand-waving or a set up for something else.

Of course, perhaps they just explain it away with the line that being dead was better than the state they were in and think nothing of it.

So this has bothered me since yestrday. Werent the people uploaded to the cloud? I'm not usually annoyed by computer stuff in shows, random tapping on keyboard "its in the wifi!" Etc didnt bother me. But the lack of understanding between upload and download drove me crazy

This is exactly what I've been thinking.

It's a matter of perspective. The bad guys were UPLOADING people's consciousness from their bodies and DOWNLOADING them to their server thingees. The Doctor then worked to DOWNLOAD everyone back to their bodies.

My wife disliked the Doctor using the tablet to alter the guy's emotions. She felt that was a line the Doctor shouldn't have crossed. I kind of agree, but we are seeing a darker side to the Doctor these days.
I kinda liked it. Having the Doctor always be a goody-two shoes gets annoying. Besides he has done a lot worse than just messing with someones emotions. Case in point: Family Of Blood.

What was worse was that he didn't seem to give a damn about the rest of the people being trapped and only about Clara. If, as mentioned above, even that.

He knew they'd all be returned to normal, most likely.

And if not, well, the Doctor is a douchebag, really.

Girl in the shop could have been Rose (dimension cannon) Old Clara, Someone new or even Amy

We all noticed the book was written by Amelia Williams right?

There was really nothing to be done for most of the people who had been uploaded. They died, nothing was sustaining their bodies, they'd come back as zombies. The Doctor is not (quite) a god.

Seeing as Clara looked to be "asleep" when her consciousness had been uploaded maybe people appeared to be in comas and were taken to hospitals, so fewer people may have died than it seems. It could be people who got into accidents because of the upload who don't have bodies to go back to.

I think at the start of the ep they said that people died when they were uploaded.

The Doctor-Clara stuff was great, rest of it:

I was hoping the episode's twist would be the wife of the Great Intelligence would be the one in control, using her eye to control the internet system's.

The wife's eye.

The Wife Eye!

I always like it when uploading/downloading is portrayed as a tug of war of transfer bars

I guess souls can only be cut/pasted, not copied

By the way, who was the actor for the asian Shard employee?

Rewatching the Eleventh Doctor episode and more and more I think having a kid companion would be really, really interesting. Or just have the main guest stars be kids but don't change the tone of the show. Write the scripts, for most part, as if the companion or guest is going to be an adult.

I imagine those that were downloaded earlier and are now 6 feet under in a casket or cremated are just SOL.

Edit: see this was covered last page.

The Doctor really didn't care about anyone else did he?

I mean, after Oswin was successfully unuploaded to the mainframe of the internets The Doctor sent them a message "Under my Protection".
That seemed to me like he was saying Oswin is Under his protection. So don't touch her.
Contrasted to the start of Smith where he said the world was under his protection.

I guess he could have meant the world was under his protection in this case as well but I thought it was bought across as only Oswin this time.

Well Oswin's the only thing that really brought him out of being a lonely recluse. Maybe that will be some sort of arc, The Doctor getting his will to save the world back... when it needs him the most, dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

I would actually really dig that.

Would get some weird looks though as this is a little kid solely traveling with a really old man. People already call out the Batman-Robin relationship weird, I can't imagine if they had the Doctor with a little kid. I mean, relatively speaking, since the Doctor is 1100 something years old, he's basically hanging out with fetuses, but it's different when they're adults.

I dunno, it'd be complicated, but I'd love it. And if they were to do that, they would HAVE to do it with Matt Smith. He's incredible with kids.

I still hold they should've worked Kid River in NY into the reason why Rory and Amelia would've had to stay behind in Angels take Manhattan. It would have been a neat way to wrap stuff up there.

I know I'm late, so this may have come up a few times in the last page, but I really liked that while the story revolved around Clara, it wasn't from her point of view (ala Amy).
Also, the new theme = yes. I wanted stripped down, and that's what I got. It sounds like the 4th Doctor's theme, but with a bass instead of completely keyboard driven.

Clara's theme (I assume) is really pleasant to the ears.

I wonder who the girl was that gave Clara the Doctor's number. I bet it was River or perhaps even Rose. I know that is highly unlikely, but since she will be in the special, perhaps somehow it was her? hmm

Some new episode details from the upcoming issue of DWM. Since there are bits of script in it, I used spoilers, just in case:

The Rings of Akhaten

The Doctor goes back in time to Clara’s past. There are a lot of aliens in the market.

CLARA: “So what’s it made of? Time? I mean, if you can rotor through it, it must be made of… stuff. Like, jam’s made of strawberries. So what’s it made of?
DOCTOR: “Well, not strawberries. That would be unacceptable.”

Cold War

The Ice Warrior is the mighty hero of Mars, Skaldak. He is waiting for more Ice Warriors but he still hasn’t been rescued so he wants his revenge. The Doctor and Clara were on their way to Vegas before the came on to submarine.

SKALDAK: “This planet. This angry planet. Both sides locked in a never-ending stalemate. I now have it all the information I require. It will take only one missile to begin the process, to end this… cold war.”
DOCTOR: “Grand Marshall, it doesn’t have to be this way. Listen to me…”
SKALDAK: “My distress call has not been answered. It will never be answered. My people are dead. They are dust. There is nothing left for me except my revenge.”

Hide

Jessica Raine’s character, Emma, can tell what other characters are thinking and she has questions for the Doctor.

CLARA: So, I am a ghost. To you. I’m a ghost. We’re all ghosts to you. We must be nothing.”
DOCTOR: “No, you’re not that.”
CLARA: “Then what are we? What can we possibly be?”
DOCTOR: “The only mystery worth solving.”

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

The Van Baalen brothers are looking to sell the TARDIS for scrap. Clara finds a disturbing secret about the TARDIS that the Doctor wants hidden. Clara gets lost in the depths of the TARDIS and the Doctor activates a self destruct button and threatens to blow up the TARDIS and everything in it unless the Van Baalen brothers help him.

DOCTOR: “Here’s the mission. We’re gonna find Clara in one hour.”
BRAM: “What makes you think we’ll help?”

The Doctor presses switches. A deep siren starts to wail. The TARDIS starts venting steam from the floor.

DOCTOR: “I just activated the self-destruct system. One hour until the ship blows. Don’t try to leave. The TARDIS is in lockdown. I’ll open those doors when Clara’s by my side.”
BRAM: “You crazy lunatic!”
DOCTOR: “My ship, my rules.”
GREGOR: “You’ll kill us all. And her!”
DOCTOR: “She’s going to die if you don’t help me. Don’t get into a spaceship with a madman. Didn’t they tell you that?”

Oh, I meant the main theme. Either Space (the tv station that is) fucked up or Murray Gold spent some time reworking the show's theme song, and I rather enjoy the new version.
Also, yes, Clara's theme is rather nice.

So, remember that book we saw in last night's premiere? Well...

doctor-who-summer-falls-cover.jpg

Doctor Who: Summer Falls by Amelia Williams (so, is that a joint pen name or did Amy finally take Rory’s name?) is published by BBC Books on Thursday 4 April, priced £1.99.

And the summary: In the seaside village of Watchcombe, young Kate is determined to make the most of her last week of summer holiday. But when she discovers a mysterious painting entitled ‘The Lord of Winter’ in a charity shop, it leads her on an adventure she never could have planned. Kate soon realises the old seacape, painted long ago by an eccentric local artist, is actually a puzzle. And with the help of some bizarre new acquaintances – including a museum curator’s magical cat, a miserable neighbour, and a lonely boy – she plans on solving it.

And then, one morning Kate wakes up to a world changed forever. For the Lord of Winter is coming – and Kate has a very important decision to make.

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS seems so far away. :(

Also, to the above, I always hate this when people bring it up. Amy took Rory's name legally ever since they've been married. I'm pretty sure she even signed her divorce papers as Amy Williams. They're simply called the Ponds to make fun of how whipped Rory is sometimes.

That actually sounds rad.

They should've gotten a better cover though... although I guess that's, what, Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys era book covers?

Oh yes, the main theme, as well. Though I also do notice some minor volume issues with Doctor Who broadcasts on space, but nothing glaring.

Well, it was published "ages" ago, so the cover does fit the time.

Yep, this.

Her tombstone is "Amelia Williams", as well.

So I watched the prequel for Bells of Saint John. I thought it was a preview rather than a prequel.

So actually, in the episode it was the 4th time he met Clara, eh?

God no.

We already got a child....the Doctor, add a kid companion and it would be both of them talking about yo yo's and balls while going to Disneyland all the time.

It's why I really want to see a more serious Doctor the next time, we've had enough jumping around whammy Docs now in a roll.

I think a child companion would make 11 rather stern and serious. He'd get competitive or exasperated as the child isn't a fully grown person, and he already has a hard enough time with them.
