Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

I'm one of the people who sort of sees the Doctor as a 'male' character, but I really don't want another quirky white guy in the Tennant/Smith area - Smith was really an incredibly safe choice when you think about it. I'd like someone of a different ethnicity, or someone who will have a very different energy as Eccleston did. Excitement!

Also: it really isn't super fast, as there were rumours they were conducting screen tests the week Akhaten aired, iirc. Said rumours also pointed to the BBC execs taking a more hands on role iin the casting than previously. That was how it leaked, an aide of some exec.

Hmm. If the higher ups are getting stuck in, might that be a pointer towards Cooper being involved? Ordinarily the role would be too small, but if the highest levels of the BBC are pushing for a proper name and making overtures in person, that might be a factor.

I tend to agree with your point, though, which is why I'd favour Kaluuya out of this mooted selection. He'd bring a more down-to-earth vibe to it all.

I think them having a more hands on role is probably more to do with the 'Moffat troubles' that have been well leaked and documented and them trying to get a lasso around his more eccentric personality traits in show running, tbh. Just a guess, but it's known they muscled in on aspects of the 50th usually left to producers, as well.

Ooh - what sort of things were those?

Aw.

I'd love to see a black Doctor, simply for him to turn to his companion and say, "AM I GINGER? :D"

I wish Clara hadn't seen the other incarnations of the doc in the timestream, otherwise, we would have had the first companion since Rose going into a regen freaking out with no knowledge of the process.

Starburst's sources are telling them that the front runners as they had heard were...
Daniel Kaluuya
Dominic Cooper
Domnhall Gleeson.

I could see Kaluuya working, although he'd be the youngest thus far. 15 Million Merits proved he has the dramatic chops.

Cooper is surely too big for it.

Would take Gleeson out of those three

I haven't seen them in a lot of things between them, but I can't say I like these three choices much. Still hoping it's someone out of nowhere and is a big surprise.

Kaluuya... nope. I don't think he has the range.
Cooper won't do it.
Gleeson... I have no idea who this is but he's ginger (yay for the Doctor I guess) and he looks like he could be a good fit.

If I'm not gonna get David Thewlis or Hugh Laurie, I want the Matt Smith thing to happen again of a complete unknown getting announced who I have absolutely no reason to be excited over and then he turns out to be great in the role.

The main priority is that the actor has to be a good fit for the role. His skin colour is secondary.

Indeed, the only prerequisites I have is that they are British, Male, and can preferably Act, and not in the Tennant sort of way, lol.

Oh jeez I didn't think of this. If we get a terrible black Doctor, nobody would be allowed to say anything negative, because they'll just be deemed a racist.

The sad thing is some people will do exactly that, be it black or otherwise, or a woman, some people will use whatever reason they can to hate.

We shouldn't have to say "I hope we finally get a black guy" as it should be a perfectly viable option already, it just hasn't happened yet, so hopefully it will at some point so we no longer need to ask for these sorts of things going forward as it will be the norm. I don't really want a female Doctor, to me the character is inherently male, but if we could get a black, ginger, female actor then we would really cover all the bases that people request, lol.

We can confirm there is no #DoctorWho announcement planned for today.

Don't believe what you read about the new #doctorwho being announced this weekend. I think it must be Starburst getting a bit over-excited!

If that means that the three candidates they put forth are BS, then good. None of them looked the part to me, and they were all a bit young, with the possible exception of Cooper, who's just too handsome for the role.

this is what worries me, i'm not opposed to a black doctor, there are loads of great black actors fit for the role, patterson included, i just fear they'll make it so cringey and politically correct, or they just won't mention the fact that he's black at all.

Yeah, if there's no announcement, it puts Starburst's story in a hell of a lot more doubt.

Meaning those three probably aren't the final three. If there's even a final three.

The way they should do it if they go with a black actor is have the regeneration as normal, have him stretch look down and go "well, this IS new" smile to camera and fade...

If it's the Doctor's reflection or a shot of the entire actor, sure. Otherwise, it would seem like you're taking things to the other extreme (making a point of him being black/certain black stereotypes)

You know what I'm going to miss most about Matt Smith, his theme music

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7VmOZ4Ppj8

I love whenever that starts playing and you just know he's about to do something awesome or its playing while he's giving a speech.

Assuming that is that they change the theme for the next Doctor but I'm guessing they will.

Not me. The sooner they get rid of that tune, the better. It's a theme tune for rushed conclusions and reset buttons. And it's overplayed.

A lot seem to be sick of it but I love it to bits. Never fails to get me pumped and when it doesn't play in a major "solving the shit that went real" moment I sometimes feel like something is missing.

Same for me, it just makes me all the more excited for whatever awesome thing he's going to do to get out of whatever mess he has got himself in.

I hope when he dies they play with it, like it looks like he is about to get out of trouble or whatever that music is playing and then something goes wrong and it just falls flat and he's done for then Regen.

Yeah, I would agree with this. It's somewhat catchy, but it's way too overblown, and I feel like it underscores all the worst aspects of Moffat's writing and Matt's Doctor. Particularly the grandstanding of the Doctor and the overblown scenes of "The Doctor is being cool/badass".

Every time I hear this tune I get goosebumps. I love it, I'll be sad to see it go.

The return of the Doctor's face in the credits was very welcome, for me. I like the way they did it much better than how it was done pre-reboot. I hope it continues going forward, although I understand if they only did it this year as a bit of a tribute to the 50th.

I like the song (and that they got rid of the terrible show theme that Smith had for 5-7a), and still agree with most of your comment. Fine with Doctor playing it cool/badass, but this is a big tell that the story is about to steamroll to a conclusion

So, out of nowhere, British press appears to be running wild with the notion that Rory Kinnear is the frontrunner.

I just can't get over how this and the Suicide Mission theme from ME2 sound so alike.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0dY57oSRV0 is a pretty shoddy mix but gets the point across.

Youtubing around, he seems like he would definitely be a stark change of direction from Smith, which is what I'm looking for personally. Seems like he'd feel like a cross between 5 and 9. And he does Shakespeare, so you know he could handle the jargony monologues. And a bald Doctor? That would be new.

A bit too safe of a choice in my opinion, but hopefully this will result in a slightly more serious bend to the character.

Can't really see Kinnear in the role. Open minds, and all that, but I'm just not sure.

Also, the memories of his Black Mirror episode would make his tenure as the Doctor REALLY weird. D:

Please no... I couldn't handle this, not after seeing him in Black Mirror...
