I don't think they'll bring him back but I'm pretty sure he wished he had taken at least one more season under Moffat. If it was for just a year, I think he would say yes.

Why would you think that when he was given the chance and turned it down?

So I finally caught up. Outside some news about Smith leaving, and John Hurt being present, I had no clue what to expect with the finale.

I loved it. Unlike River I thought they executed the big reveal for Clara very well. The episode was good. Richard Grant was great, and the reveal of Hurt at the end was great.

I haven't read much in the way of speculation, as I wanted to go into this cold. I figure he's either the Valeyard, or the REAL Ninth Doctor, who killed the Time Lords and the Dalek's in the war.

I don't know enough about the British TV scene to really know who's good for the part. I do know at least a few.

Russel Tovey? I don't know about him. I always just know him as "Allons-y" Alonso Frame, George (Being Human), and Henry (Sherlock). And that pretty much equals to "scared squirrel". No offence to him, he plays being scared very well.

Chiwetel Ejiofor? I know him from Serenity, 2012, and Salt. He seems to play a reserved character very well, could be Doctor-like. I don't mind him, but this is purely from knowing him in those three movies.

So, my default
joke
pick of Rupert Grint stands. :lol

I'm gonna start campaigning for Noel Fielding for Doc 12!

He'd be excellent, but in reality he's too big for it now.

I dunno, he still works with Moffat on Sherlock. Also in an interview when asked about him, Moffat said as a joke that they couldn't have both Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch on the same screen because of how square their faces are. Now Smith will be gone. He also said that Matt Smith would be staying "forever" fairly recently, even though he clearly must have known that he would be leaving. Would be awesome. I think when he gets older he could play the 4th Doctor.

I just re-watched Rings of Akhaten. As mediocre as it is, Matt Smith's monologue and the music pretty much make up for it. Powerful stuff.

Well, she was supposedly selling coke and Simon Cowell is a bitter enough bastard to sell her out for not continuing with the X-Factor.

Oh, you mean the other story.

She tweeted that she wanted to be the Doctor. That's all she wrote.

Wait, the Star is 15p now? I don't think it was even that cheap when it was launched.

I know, but 'Jackson's teen daughter is in line to take over the Tardis' amused me. Think of the possibilities!

I am easily amused

That story apparently made the BBC News Twitter feed and Bleeding Cool. What?

Paris Jackson also said she wants to be a ******, but I don't think that'll make the papers. I think.

What I want from the new Doctor: Someone relatively unknown, someone very different. Boy or girl, ginger or no, black or white. Someone older might be a nice change-up. Never really had any sort of guideline for what the 12th should be like, but I've always liked the notion of the 13th being 'the unlucky one,' where he just has to work that much harder because things often don't go his way.

God, I've just realised that the implication of JLC's statement about Matt is that we're going to get ANOTHER series with the non-entity that is clara :/

Honest question - in terms of rewatching series 5 now, is your enjoyment more or less in knowing how the mysteries around the cracks, Amy, River, Rorys deaths, random incidences like alternating bow ties, the exploding tardis and in particular the Silence with it 'falling' are (and aren't in some cases) resolved or explained later on?

With a lot of 5 & 6 being built on foundations of ongoing mystery and stories, do they hold up when coupled with knowledge of how they pan out? I've not revisited them in a while. I have rewatched earlier series and in this area they mostly do or are the same, but I get the feeling it'd be worse in this regard with 5 onwards. I must try it.

I've rewatched series 5 and 6 since their transmission and they still hold up, if anything a rewatch allows you to understand just how intricately some of it was plotted (two doctors in the forest in flesh & stone for instance, and that shot of amy hearing the tardis materialise in the eleventh hour which is an allusion to the final scene in the angels take manhattan), and even if you found the mysteries disappointing, its my personal opinion that both series 5 and 6 contain more strong individual stories than any of the four under Russel's tenure, and the less accomplished stories never stoop quite as low as Russel's worst.

Torchwood Glasgow was said to be run by a small strange man, IIRC. Maybe a potato like one would fit the description.

I hear there was this Twitter campaign for Sue Perkins from a few months back then.

Would be interesting, and I'm all for a female Doctor for a change, but it's hard to get past the impression of a female David Tennant.

Good. Hopefully now the "impossible girl" mystery has been resolved, Series 8 can focus a bit on developing her character. JLC is talented, she just needs more stuff to do and more chances to show her range.

Rewatched 5 & 6 recently, and it's pretty clear that Moffat didn't have much planned out beforehand, he was just making it up as he went along. I was really looking forward to Moffat taking over, but now I just want someone else to have a go.

If they go gimmick / PC casting after over 40 years of watching, I'm done. This series was tedious enough as it is. Maybe it's the sheer class of Game of Thrones as well, but Dr Who has been short of anything resembling Girl in the Fireplace / Blink of late. I hope Moffat goes as well, he is a great writer, but a poor showrunner.

Oh my name to throw into the ring: Andy Serkis. About time his mo-cap talents get an actual face for people to see.

And everything I loved about him.... weird.

subtlety what?

He's an accomplished actor as is evidenced in the stuff he did before and after Who (and select episodes of the show) but he was so inexorably over the top with every facial expression and piece of dialogue. I blame the writing more than anything though.

And did "Silence will fall" ever get resolved? Or was Mofatt pulling a Lidelof on us?

Some people were desperately trying to find a tenuous answer in "the name of the doctor" but I'm not buying it - either an answer is still pending or Moffat has abandoned that storyline.

The implication that a personality itself can't be "over the top" is what bothers me. 10 was very stereotypically manic and I LOVED that. 11 is whimsical, but 10 could jump back and forth between emotions (and extreme ones) in an instant, and I loved that about him. He was far more intensely invested in the world than 11 is. I liked that about his character, and it was very evident from his forceful delivery in things like that gif. It's a very realistic type of expression. Everyone knows (or is) someone like that who will just out of nowhere shift between two completely separate thoughts very quickly and forcefully.

Why does the replacement need to be announced before the Christmas special begins filming next month?

They can film the post-regeneration scene later on if need be, they did with Tennant. Supposedly Series 8 doesn't film till September or even next year.

Unless Doctor 12 plays a larger role in the episode....

Really no idea. I appreciate what they said about leaks getting off the set but I'm sure the casting sessions could have been kept closed.

Announcing all this six weeks before it films and six months before it actually airs is just silly and overshadows the 50th special in a way.

An official announcement ruins any damage a leak could do. Its going to leak if they try to keep it secret its like a casting a new James Bond its a huge talking point for magazines, news sites and blogs and newspapers. Many willing to pay huge money to get the details.

Let's get real here... of course they've ruled that out.

The BBC haven't, but I bet Moffat sure has! This is a man who when we hasn't in charge described the Doctor as a "definitively male" character - and while he's had to reverse his position to 'Well, it COULD happen' to avoid being accused of sexism, you can bet he still feels the same way.

So I was going through my DVDs just so I could check which Classic Who serials I had and which I didn't so I could make sure I don't start doubling up anyway heres my complete classic series collection of Dr Who DVD's

So yeah I only need one more Troughton DVD to have the complete set of his stuff, also need alot more Forth Doctor. Kinda shocks me I don't have much in the way of Davidson stuff yet I have a fair deal of Colin Baker. Want to track down the Davros set so that'll tie up most of the Dalek stuff. Also think I'm pretty set with the Hartnell era, I only really want his Dalek stuff and can't really be bothered with the rest.

Yup. She's female David Tennant to me. Still think she's great. I have a bit of a crush on her.

I'm not really for a female Doctor though. I really do think of him as a male character. Still, the right woman could persuade me to think otherwise.

If it's anything like season 6 and 7, all the lose ends will be tied up in the last five-six minutes of the 50th leaving Moffat a blank slate to make up more unfinished stories for 8.
I think we might as well all begin accepting those things will not be resolved.

You guys. Just be thankful we're probably never getting the Doctor portrayed by a child. Save for flashbacks, I mean. I think I can handle any hair colour, any collection of sex chromosomes, any level of optical wear, any horrible fashion sense, fat, thin, bald, dredlocked, any race, any accent that I can essentially understand without craning my neck, and even those that like horrible British treats. But Doctor Who will never be getting its version of Jake Lloyd or Wesley Crusher.

Be thankful.
