Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

The proper way to handle that would have to been to make it clear that the trailer would be properly shown promptly, and that it wouldn't have existed without the Con and pre-emptive leaking of the trailer might jeopardise the Who team's relationship with the Con.

This was not the proper way to handle it. Not from Moffat, not from BBCA.

And we Brit pay for the licensing fee that made the trailer, so the BBC shouldn't really making it exclusive for Americans.

How is this turning into a Brit vs American thing? You do know that Comic Con is international, right? Just because it takes place here doesn't mean it's in the immediate vicinity for most of us, either.

US promotional activity like this is organised by BBC America, part of BBC Worldwide.

It's still being shown in America. Nobody's turning it into Brit vs American, but it's pretty funny the first footage of the celebration of a British show gets shown off exclusively in America.

We'll get it eventually I guess, no point getting angry. Think they've handled it piss-poor though.

And? The majority of American Doctor Who fans aren't getting to see this just as much as the majority of UK Doctor Who fans.

Why is that funny? It's Comic Con, it's unarguably the biggest "nerd event" worldwide. I don't see why it being in America is any sort of issue.

Of the 6-8k people in Hall H who saw it, how many of them do you think weren't from America?

They're complaining because they specifically pay to have these programs produced, and this is essentially ADVERTISING for that product, and they're being told not only that they should have paid the hundreds/thousands of dollars to fly to San Diego if they wanted to see it, they're being THREATENED with no more promotional material at all (which is weird as shit) if they manage to share whatever bootlegged versions of the trailer might exist.

Basically, Moffat is telling fans of his program that their excitement, translated to enthusiasm to spread that advertisment for them, at no charge, is a bad thing, and if they don't tamp down that excitement, and refuse to share this commercial, then they'll be punished with no more commercials from San Diego.

That whole thing is insipid. Especially when it's pretty obvious that the footage will, at some point, be repurposed into an ad that will be placed on a website for everyone to see, because that's the whole point of making it, so that more than 8000 people see it once in San Diego. Otherwise that's terrible marketing.

It's not that I feel any sort of negative sentiment to people who got to see it, American or not. I just don't think such a thing should be kept exclusively to such a small group of people.

Plus the fact that several British publications are now giving line by line summaries of the trailer, making the whole thing seem pointless as fuck.

Ahhhhh didn't think about this. I get it now.

Shitty situation all around.

Agree 100%

Exactly the same shitty format as previous years, just with added threats/dickishness from Moffat.

Told y'all to cool your jets.

I remember exactly the same uproar over the trailer for "The Next Doctor" they had, and that was 5 years ago now. That trailer was never actually released.

Yeah but that was a run of the mill Christmas special with a "new Doctor" cocktease. This is the 50th Anniversary. I can't imagine myself feeling the same had they been withholding one for The Doctor the Witch and the Wardrobe....

Sometimes I really hate Comic Con. I understand how awesome it is for the people who get to be there, but exclusive promotional material and trailers just for that audience makes no sense.

It just builds a negative relationship between the production team and the fans.

Moffat is kind of over doing it. Especially considering how the fanbase held off on leaking the season finale...and then he turns around and threatens them that hardcore? Geez.

British taxpayers pay to make product, SDCC profits from exclusive use of product.

Given the increasing scrutiny over BBC's spending this is a really silly move.

They've done it every year. Literally every single year since 2008.

Agree that this should have been seen from a mile off. I think it's the threats/dickishness that change it though. Before it's just a stupid decision. Now it's a stupid with a malicious tone.

America or no, the fact remains that it's lame as fucking hell to show a trailer to a small group of fans and then threaten the entire fanbase not to spread it. It's cockfucker behaviour that encourages the people who were at SDCC to be cockfuckers themselves.

And that's quite beside the fact that I'm pretty sure that the majority of people who watched the trailer were probably American fans who contribute a comparatively small fraction of the production costs.

[edit] Is there a mobilised fan movement to take to twitter to tell Moffat to fuck off and shove it up his arse? There should be.

Grrr!! Not looking like the trailer will officially be released tonight. Here's hoping tomorrow will bear the fruit we all wish to devour ;)

Surprise surprise.

...I don't really see no more SDCC exclusives as being the threat they think it is.

Not even a little. Like a huge majority of the planet, getting to SDCC would be prohibitively expensive for me, so threatening to not release exclusive content at an event I'm never going to attend makes no difference to me one way or another.

Incidentally, I can't see why they don't just do timed exclusivity. That way everyone wins.

I think if Moffatt is going to resort to threats we can surmise it'll be at least a week, if ever.

He's threatening those that would leak the footage, i.e. those attending SDCC and who would go again. Of course it makes fuck all difference to us, and I would shed no tears

I would gather it is timed exclusivity, like we're not going to get a trailer for the 50th!

They really do need to push this one a bit harder than your standard Christmas special though. We haven't had a Twelve announcement yet or a single trailer for the 50th, and it's high time for them to start pimping both. They really need to put out some kind of trailer for public consumption at least.

I hope someone posts it. If that's how Moffat is going to handle "SDCC exclusvies," I'd rather he just not show up at all.

Don't worry, come October you won't be able to move for it in the UK. Typical BBC show promotion begins no more than about a month ahead of time, so it's still really too early. 12 might not even be cast yet.

Moffat specifically said they haven't cast him yet at the panel.

I know, I know, "Don't believe his lies" but I dunno. I guess I choose to believe that one.

Yeah it is a bit early to be promoting it yet, we're just over 5 months away.

... I still want my fucking trailer though Moffatt I will find where you live and steal that Weeping Angel from your garden.

He's having fun and showing something ahead of time to the people he decided to show it to. He makes the show and he gets to do that. I want to see it too, but damn if people can't turn into entitled sounding babies at the drop of a hat (or in this case trailer).

Oh I know. He hardly lets us forget that it's his show and he's making it for him. Wouldn't mind a slice of the delicious multi-Doctor pie though.

Luckily for those who're fortunate enough to be able to attend, there are many, many other great reasons to go to SDCC besides trailers.

Well, true. I was thinking of a shorter period of exclusivity, i.e. a couple of days perhaps. Much longer and you're going to piss off a bunch of fans (and by a bunch I mean most).

Not that pissing off fans is that big of a deal given our usual response is just to get angry online where the real world can't see or hear us, but still.

Things must be really messed up out there in Cardiff if they haven't actually cast Twelve yet. They have to write the damn thing and then film it, much less promote it. They really don't have that much time left, and I'm fairly certain they're not going to write a new Doctor's first episode until they've cast the actor.

Oh look, that thing we've seen HUNDREDS OF TIMES ALREADY. Pardon me while I faint from the hype vapors. Thank you, BBC, this is exactly what the fans were hoping for. */sarcasm*

This would be like promising to reveal an exclusive image from the Anniversary and it would be a pictures of The TARDIS just parked by a wall.

Whaat? Are you not excited?

What? 12 isn't going to have a full episode until some time next year. He'll be in a 10 second segment at the end of the Christmas special, which they'll probably film at the last possible second.

Supposedly. Some people like me suspect its a ruse and he'll regenerate in the special.

Ain't even mad about this trailer thing. I'll never understand being secretive with promotional material but them's the breaks. The threats are very silly though.

While I'm generally on the "Don't trust the moff" bandwagon, on this one I think it's out of his hands. If they tried to do anything else there's no way it'd be kept a secret.

It all basically hinges on the next month, really. Christmas starts filming in August. At that point we'll either see Matt out on location in costume at least once during the month or not. If it turns out not, we're probably on. If they keep filming indoors, it'd surprise me - unless Moffat has a reason to write an entirely studio-bound episode.

It could be studio bound and not be - Voyage of the Damned was entirely studio but for 2 scenes, after all (written that way because RTD was upset about how obviously summer it was in outdoor scenes in The Runaway Bride) - but given the types of Christmas stories Moffat seems to like to write compared to RTD, I doubt he'd do an entirely studio episode without reason.

I think there's a fair chance of Matt being gone in November. I think the really cool thing they could do is gravely injure him during that episode, have a cliffhanger ending throw him into an unavoidable conflict at Christmas (since it's only a month to wait, a cliffhanger into Christmas isn't negative) and either fighting his way through it or popping midway through. All this would require 12 to be cast now, and that's a hell of a secret to keep - but it's far easier to keep the secret of one guy knowing he has the job and not telling anyone but his close family than it is to keep the secret of casting going on, where tons of agents, agencies, casting directors and actors are in the loop.

What is clear is that they're filming in the next 2-3 weeks and Matt's hair is still super short... and I just can't imagine them making his last appearance without his iconic hair. Unless they get a wig... but then Matt said he wouldn't use a wig, didn't he, because it wasn't real enough? Right after he first shaved it?
