My unsolicited pitch for a third Retro DKC:

Donkey Kong Country: Crocodile Isle

...with Animal Buddies exploding off the cover as K. Rool and the Kremlings shake their fists in anger in the background! "Curse you, Donkey Kooooooooong!!"

Here's the premise:

K. Rool and the Kremlings have kidnapped the Animal Buddies of DK Island, along with specimens like Squiddicus, the Giant Bat and Snowmads. The animals are being held captive at Crocodile Isle, a floating amusement park where they're forced to entertain tourists across various venues.

There are nine worlds:

- Main Street
- Water Park
- Greenhouse
- Thrill Rides
- Casino Club
- Haunted Hollow
- Ski Resort
- World Walk
- The Zoo

The following is imagery you'd see:

"Main Street" is a resort town in the middle of a festival, with parade floats, hot-air balloons, fireworks, confetti, etc. Run through apartments, hotels, restaurants, cafes, malls and museums; traverse rooftops and fire escapes, sewers and service tunnels, shipyards and streets, parks and ponds; and more.

"Water Park" has swimming pools up and down a terraced hillside, water cascading from one to the next, with tube-slides spiraling down to the beach, where one can dive to find coral reefs or launch from one cruise ship to the next.

"Greenhouse" is a sprawling garden, enclosed by a latticework of glass and steel. Heat lamps and waterworks keep the beanstalks and bramble growing, ripe with fruits and veggies. There are also towering beehives, overflowing with honey and Zingers.

"Thrill Rides" include numerous rocket barrel stages and mine cart stages, the latter in the form of coasters, featuring the gem-eyed skull-cart from DKC2 -- loop-de-looping, corkscrewing and riding upside-down past giant animatronic statues, all to a remix of "Disco Train." In some levels, players traverse the fairgrounds, and even jump across the crossbeams of the coasters.

"Casino Club" is the gaming district, all gilded gold and flashing neon, dotted with palm trees and spotlights. Expect slot machines, roulette wheels, poker tables, etc., as well as video arcades, claw machines, night clubs, puppet theater, magic acts and more.

"Haunted Hollow" is filled with spectral illusions, mirror mazes, trapdoors and other tricks. Explore spooky woods, dreary mansions, Victorian gardens, medieval castles and more.

"Ski Resort" has snow-powdered pines, chairlifts, cabins and rock-climbing reminiscent of K3 in DKC3, as well as Hoofer's return from Jungle Beat.

"World Walk" consists of levels inspired by countries around the globe, I.E. a Japan-inspired silhouette level with ninjas, pagodas and cherry blossom trees. Also features a factory where animatronics are made, featuring a remix of "Nuts and Bolts" from DKC3.

"The Zoo" is where players free Squiddicus, the Giant Bat, the Snowmads and others, turning former enemies into friends who will start an insurrection that will stop K. Rool and the Kremlings. Many levels here feature the Animal Buddies -- sometimes multiple Animal Buddies in a single level.

Regarding the Animal Buddies:

The Animal Buddies have been reworked mechanically to diversify the gameplay while maintaining Retro's focus on momentum and flow. They include:

- Rambi
- Engarde
- Espresso
- Winky
- Squawks
- Squitter
- Rattly
- Glimmer
- Clapper
- Ellie
- Flurl
- Hoofer

Other additions:

The soundtrack is once again by David Wise, featuring new remixes of timeless tunes like "Mining Melancholy," "Hot Head Bop" and "Forest Interlude."

DK Coins return, one hidden in each level, alongside the KONG letters and Puzzle Pieces. Also, each bonus room is unique to its level and never appears twice.

Swanky Kong offers a diversion from the action with trivia that tests your knowledge of the game world, and mini-games that test your skill.

Players now have the option to play as either DK, by himself or modified by Diddy, Dixie or Cranky... Or they can switch to the buddy character, who retains the four hearts. When they lose their two hearts, action switches back to DK.

I wish they did it like SM3DW and allowed you to play as any of the Kong characters on any level from the start. Especially since Retro already took the time to work out their moves for multiplayer. It seems criminal that they relegate the other Kong's to be sidekicks.

It's not exactly what you're looking for but you can choose to play as any of the 4 characters solo on Hard Mode. You only get 1 heart though and there aren't any checkpoints.

SPOILER
you can play all of them in hard mode if you want (without DK)

I knew that... I just don't see why they wouldn't allow you to play as the other Kongs right from the start... Especially since they already did all the work. All they would have to do is add it as an option.

Yeah, I agree. Most of the players won't even notice this option because the later levels are so fuckin' hard.

Someone please tell me, because I never figured it out from the first game- how do I get to combo the end of stage barrel? Sometimes it lets me do it, sometimes not. Thanks.

Finally finished it btw. Incredible stuff, and I still have a few stages to unlock yet. Better than Retro's first incredible DKC effort, but not quite DKC2 level. Close, though.

Youve got to time your leap to the barrel just right to hit the red and yellow crcled star icon. It can be done in every stage, obviously in some it's tougher than others.

Woah, didn't know about that and it's pretty cool. Looking that little bit more forward to beating the game now (That is how I unlock Hard Mode, I assume?)

You have to beat every level with all KONG letters to unlock the
Secret 7th World
. Beat that and you're good to go :)

Agreed, I don't think I will ever unlock hard mode as I am not that good at the K-levels. Couldn't even finish K-1 or K-2.

Alright, cool. I was already on board for collecting the letters, since the K levels in DKCR were a lot of fun. Only trouble I'm having is finding the levels off the main path. I'm guessing there are secret exits for me to find.

Started going for Shiny Golds yesterday after hearing about how bad 2-2 was from a friend who was trying it at the time.

He wasn't kidding, this level is HARSH! I couldn't make any siginificant progress after more than 2 hours yesterday. I never had to spend this much time on any single level in the original game...

But I finally did it, man does it feel good!

That skip with the turbo pogo up those 2 moving crates.... Holy shit you feel like a wizard when you pull it off![/QUOTE]
Just watched this run, that was some intense pogoing action in the eruption section, it's amazing watching the momentum be maintained through timely cane bouncing.

Cranky's cane bounce is probably the most satisfying platforming mechanic since... since chaining a string of enemies with Dixie's ponytail twirl in DKC2. It just has that pitch-perfect bop! and high-flying recoil.

Am I the only one hoping that Retro's next game is a new DKC? I'd love to see a new Metroid but the final chapter of the new trilogy (with David Wise and Kremlings of course) is my most anticipated game now.

Yeah, it's so much fun! When you do a roll jump off of those moving crates you can keep your momentum going by pogo bouncing. That's why I'm going so fast there.

The really hard part is to get up that stack of crates without slowing down, I must have spent 4 hours on this level alone. Retro have really stepped up the difficulty it seems.

My buddy got me into listening to the soundtracks of each level, and I must say i am chomping at the bit to get my hands on a cd or album or something.

Beat 6-K with all puzzle pieces on my first go. (No Funky items, of course.) Felt good!

Now it's time for the final boss. Hopefully it's not as infuriating as Returns' was!

How about the remakes of DKC2's Krem Quay and Gloomy Gulch?

Your breaking my heart, please stop....
Thankfully donkey kong returns sold more than the metroid prime games, hence why we now have tropical freeze.
It's heartbreaking to know that tropical freeze will likely be the last dkc for a long time.
So many people complaining it's not metroid plus poor sales due to wii u install base means this franchise will once again be locked away for a long time.
When we get the inevitable new retro metroid game, i'm sure it will be great but i won't be able to play it without thinking what could have been.
(just how metroid fans feel now)
:-(

Since the DKCR roll jump is of course what you meant to say, and now you can do roll jump into cane pogo for maximum satisfaction.

I'm honestly a bit inconsistent at timing the ponytail twirl on trios of enemies in DKC2, for some reason I felt the cartwheel was infinitely more reliable, I might just be saying this because my run through Castle Crush last month had some shameful deaths courtesy of those porcupines.

Am I the only one hoping that Retro's next game is a new DKC? I'd love to see a new Metroid but the final chapter of the new trilogy (with David Wise and Kremlings of course) is my most anticipated game now.

I want it but I'd also leave it a while, hopefully somewhere down the line Retro will get big enough to tackle two games at once so we can get more Donkey Kong with significantly less whining I'd hope.

If Tropical Freeze doesn't sell well on WiiU, Nintendo won't interpret that as "Oh, DKC doesn't sell." They'll interpret it as, "Oh, DKC didn't sell well because WiiU isn't selling well -- same reason as 3D World not selling well -- and a Metroid would've likely done worse" (which is not without precedent -- Returns outsold fellow Wii title MP3: Corruption by a wide margin, IIRC).

What would you guys think of the next DKC on 3DS? It would be hard going back to that after TF.
Terrible idea.

There's no way it could replicate the quality seen here. It couldn't really handle the original Wii game either. Framerate was lousy.

I'd still rather see a new IP with Wise and Yamamoto providing the music. I wouldn't complain if we received another DK, though.

DKC on 3DS at 60fps or no DKC on 3DS.

Retro should do one more DKC because:

1) They're at the top of their game now, delivering the finest platforming ever. They've perfected the formula.
2) The producer said in an interview they still have lots of ideas for a new one (and specifically noted Animal Buddies).
3) Returns sold better than the Metroid Prime series. And however Tropical Freeze does, Nintendo sure wouldn't have expected Metroid to do any better.
4) A third installment would complete a trilogy, and create symmetry by mirroring Rare's trilogy.
5) This in turn would allow for a sweet three-in-one collection at some point!

I definitely wouldn't mind another one. But one more. After that, it could get a little fatigue. Most game series always go downhill after the third game for some reason.

I wouldn't mind dlc islands for TF. Only six and the cheaper price got me thinking that, if some of it could be dlc?

I seriously can't stop playing this game. Two levels left until hard mode but I'm replaying old levels at the moment. It's just too good.
The last time I had so much fun replaying old levels was....well....the original DKC trilogy. I'm 20 years younger.
