Don't call it an acquisition: Kinda Funny joins Rooster Teeth's "Let's Play family"

Is there a reason for such an immediate negative response or is it just "Gaf being Gaf."

I don't know really, it seems to stem from the whole Fallout 4 thing.

Not that it wasn't a shitty opinion to have, but it seems like slamming a whole company of over 100 people who have been working for over a decade on delivering content, just because two employees had a shit opinion on a podcast once seems a little overboard.

Other than that, people may not like their content but there's never been anything particularly offensive from them.

I don't follow Rooster Teeth to know what they do that is hated. Though I vaguely remember they attacked outlets that scored Fallout 4 less than perfect while sitting on a set covered in Fallout 4 themed merchandise.

"They" meaning three employees out of over a hundred, only one if which is associated with Let's Play. And the fact that the Let's Play "boss" has on more than one occasion mocked the people who gave Gerstmann shit.

Pretty much. People's reactions were embarrassing.

They were 3 of the main group of people who appear on the channel and most often speak for the company. What exactly is your point?

So people on here and just being unreasonable then? Slamming the company for the actions of a few?

It's still a gross overreaction and comes off as extremely childish.

After tax submission, Colin was complaining really hardcore about their margins, so they must have not made much profit.

Or Colin was just being Colin and complaining.

I'm not really sure how the deal benefits RT, but this sounds like a great deal for the KF guys.

Sounds like a little of column A, a little of column B then.

Pretty silly all in all, RT and the channels they own put out a lot of quality content, especially considering their size.

Their love for Rooster Teeth might turn a lot of people off with this venture, as RT ain't exactly a beacon of glorious content in the eyes of the masses. Hopefully it works out for them.

Will be interesting to see how their Patreon community reacts now that they have acquired official funding through this acquisition.

That the channel in question wasn't the channel that's being discussed in this thread?

KF is working with Let's Play, which is a division of RT. The Know, where the comment was made, is a separate channel, which only has one member of staff crossover, and he's far from the most influential or representative of that channel.

Probably because RT is a fucking huge company with multiple successful youtube channels, their own expo, their own movie, a hugely successful anime show that's also about to be shown in theaters, have that same show on Netflix, have RvB on TV, have a successful game show, two successful podcasts, have had several members on TV, have had tv stars on their shows, have a dude that was part of a YouTube billboard because of how successful his and Dan's channel is.

Yeah but what about their tarnished image on GAF

I'm not really sure how the deal benefits RT, but this sounds like a great deal for the KF guys.

KF is now selling their shirts through RT's store. I think the ads that appear on/during KF content will not be coordinated through RT. So, RT will be making money off of KF's content, while KF will get backend support (such as merch store, events planning) and potentially exposure to a wider audience.

Because a lot of people like KindaFunny how it is and want none of that RT or Funhaus influence on their content.

Seems like a pretty unfounded fear, I was a fan of Inside Gaming, Funhaus is pretty much exactly the same, same guys, humor, everything.

The only difference is that they sometimes mention the RT guys and occasionally Burnie and Geoff are over there.

They've been pretty good at keeping the channels they're involved with distinct.

Watched the LP before. It's a good video, but it's just a shame there were obviously some issues getting 8 people on mic's.

Funhaus/Rooster Teeth humor is really adolescent IMO. It's really not for me and I can understand why a lot of Gaffers feel averse towards the content.

May be the case.

Well, as long as they stay independent and do their stuff apart from the Rooster Teeth roster, whatever I guess.

I agree for the most part but I'm disappointed that the only Mario Maker and recent Mario Kart 8 videos have Screw Attack in them. :/

So wait, why does GAF seem to dislike Rooster Teeth?

I'm not that bothered about the Kinda Funny news as I don't follow them, but the RT content tends to skew towards a younger audience. That's smart, because that's where the YT money really is, but I can see why people who follow them would be turned off and worried that they may affect their content.

Probably because they want some mainstream, generally respected game critics as part of their larger umbrella. Colin and Greg lend a bit of credibility to any operation they are a part of, and Tim and Nick will probably fit in well with the rooster teeth culture. It's also a great move on Kinda Funny's part in terms of widening their audience.

This is a perfectly reasonable opinion to have. Ive got no problem if RT content isn't for people.

What I struggle with is why certain GAF members see it as a justifiable reason to shitpost in every RT thread that appears?

Appeal to younger audience meaning, quick cut and loud?

We'll truly know we live in a dark timeline if this ever happens to Easy Allies. Though, I'm sure Brandon and the boys know better.

People are seeing it as a potential stepping stone. Greg refusing to rule anything out there either:

Hey, Greg. I like the fact that kinda funny is independent and I know you've said that Rooster Teeth is not buying you guys, but is it heading that way? Will you guys eventually be like screw attack and funhaus? Will you eventually be part if the rt umbrella? I hope not.
Is that weird to say? I love you guys and will always support kinda funny, but want you guys to be your own thing. Thanks for reading my concerns. Can't wait to meet you and every one else at KFL2.
I don't think it's weird to say -- I want you to feel like you can be open here.

The future is always hard to predict. Are we heading that way? I honestly have no idea. We feel like this partnership is the best of both worlds -- we get their support, tools, and advice but we maintain our independence.

For us, it's always going to be "What's best for Kinda Funny?" This is what's best for us right now. <3

Let's Play seems a lot like REACT. Do still not get it?

Have nothing against RT. Glad KF are going to get the tools and funds to carry on deleivering quality content like the Inside Gaming guys have.

I avoid Funhaus/Rooster Teeth like the absolute plague, so this isn't exactly welcome news.

True, but I think they expected more subscribers by now. They still only have 160.000 subscribers, but on the other hand what can you expect from a YouTube channel that does 2 podcasts a week and sometimes a let's play and rarely a discussion/review about a game.
With one podcast that's by the way locked out for a week for normal users.

Because rent is so high and stuff in San Francisco area, why do they not move their operation where it's cheaper to reside in California? I understand they have family and shit –– but if they wanna retain their independence, I don't think it would be feasible for them to subsist without being bought outright by Rooster Teeth. Eventually their cost will only increase and this will especially be the case when they move to their new working space, whenever that happens.
