Yeah I know you call it jelly but it's really jam
Nah, it's jelly. Jelly doesn't have the fruit in it, just the juice and pectin to thicken it. You leave in the mashed up fruit, it's jam. You don't mash the fruit up as much, it's preserves. (I'll let you in on an American secret. That last post was just a little American humor. We take our jellies, jams, and preserves quite seriously down South. In the American South. Of course you can use jam if you want. Because America is a free country. America?
America.)
But seriously, I know our country has done a lot of harm and a lot of good in the world. We're a giant and what we do reverberates across the globe because of it. As for our troubles at home, well, it's very complicated. It's not as simple as Americans as a people being stupid or callous, though some are. I mean, do some of you from smaller countries even comprehend how truly goddamn large and varied the nation is and what that means for logistics?
Being so large and vast and fractious, America is hard to govern and provide infrastructure for. There are some 300 million of us and we don't have the benefit of a common race, culture, or religion to get us all moving in the same direction. Just some nebulous, shifting ideals and a general desire for a happier, better life.
And you've got to remember, a lot of the old countries sent us their general undesirables to their own benefit throughout the history of this nation. So when Britons and others complain about our fundamentalist streak, remember that your nation cast off your zealots and peasants here when it was convenient instead of dealing with them in house. So yeah, we have poverty, superstition, and ignorance in abundance in many areas. When you're a dumping ground and magnet for the poor, the ill-educated, and the hopeless, you're going to have more of those sorts of people.
But that's okay. Taking in those people and giving them a chance to improve their circumstances and in turn strengthen the nation is what we're about. Or tell ourselves we're about, at least. It's of course not as simple as that in modern America as the game is currently pretty rigged, but it's still a noble sentiment.
Basically, I still think America on the whole means well. I know some really don't like us being the leader of the moment, and for legitimate reasons, but would you honestly prefer Russia or China over us?
