Doom (2016) PC performance thread

Have you reached the foundry level? I've just got there and my performance has gone from super smooth to shit the bed poor. Feels like 30fps.

Wtf

I have everything max, including recently pumping up the AA to its highest setting and my 970 hasn't dropped a single frame from what I can see on the frame counter. I'm about 1 or two levels before the end.

If you experience constant 30fps drops, enable adaptive vsync if available, seems borderless windowed does not force tripple buffering in this game, vsync on or off.

It was shadow play, the in game metric was still showing 60fps but I was getting huge judder and frame drops, stopped streaming, super smooth again.

Damn, guess I need to upgrade my cpu then.

Never noticed drops before in games while streaming.

Yeah Shadowplay and Doom don't play along very well performance-wise. I think it might have to to with the desktop capture thing.

Yeah, the problem is the tearing shitshow that starts with it, I really don't understand this game, I was monitoring it with rivaturner and it doesn't seem THAT taxing on my OC'd 780 even less on my 4.5GHz 2500K but it keeps going down to 30fps in spots where NOTHING AT ALL is happening, no transparencies, no reflections, no alpha effects, no action at all...

It seems really poor optimized for 700 cards or Keppler in general, I want to wait for Vulkan, but damn I just want to keep playing, and then the tearing cutting my eyes... ugh.

By the way anyone else having trouble getting adaptive vsync running on AMD cards?

And yeah, tripple buff in win. bord. doesn't work.

Well I posted some results with a 780 and my experience is quite different. The devil is probably in the detail, see how your exact specs and settings differ from mine. I should add I've seen drops as low as 46 now after playing 5 levels, but nothing near as dramatic as what you're seeing.

I can't take the Xbox One version anymore, honestly looks like it runs at 720p. I want to get it on PC.

Can anybody with similar specs tell me how their game performs?

GTX970
i74790 (not k) 3.6ghz
8gb RAM
Windows 10

1080p with ultra locked 60 should be possible

These are my specs and a screeshot I took yesterday:

Can anyone explain to me why the FPS drop like a rock here? what I'm I looking at that is so taxing, going from 30 to 60fps every few seconds in the previous fight in this place fucked me really bad, any tips to get locked 60fps are really appreciated, not even medium settings could get me to raise the FPS count in this particular spot.

i5 2500K @4.5GHz -> was 4.2, OC'd to 4.5 yesterday.
780 factory OC'd to 1071mhz
16GB RAM
128GB Crucial SSD

Playing in default High Setting.

1080p with high settings no problem.

Game will not go fullscreen @ 1080p on my 4k TV. Have to change my desktop resolution to 1080p. If I don't, the game will only take up one corner. Weird.

I had the same

Go to the .exe
Go to compatibility tab
Select do not scale high dpi display.

Now you can keep desktop resolution at 4K and 1080 will be full screen

Launch as normal

Set vsync to adaptive maybe? Seems like the game uses double buffered vsync, so it'll drop to 30 if you're on a 60hz screen.

The game tears like crazy when I turn on adaptive sync, I'll actvate tripple buffering on Nvidia control panel and see how it goes when my GF stops using the big TV.

These are my specs and a screeshot I took yesterday:

60Hz monitor and running VSync are the big differences in our setups. At 144Hz I barely notice any tearing so always have VSync off.

GPU isn't reaching its full potential either. Sounds like you're using an MSI Twin Frozr with that factory setting. If so you could probably get another 100 MHz but you'll need to ditch the gaming app and manually adjust.

Has anyone noticed any stutters in this game? I just noticed a couple yesterday. They're extremely rare and was wondering if anyone else has seen them? It's like the game is loading something during gameplay, and there's a slight hiccup.

How does the game perform on older graphics cards? I have a Radeon HD6870 1GB VRAM.
With an i5 3570K (non-overclocked) and 8GBs of RAM.

For reference I can run Street Fighter V at 60FPS on medium.

Why did you even consider the x1 version when you have that pc at home?

Based on this thread I think im gonna wait on this game until i replace my 970 with a 1080. I'd like to play it as its meant to be played, at 120FPS.

You can totally get 100-120 FPS at 1080p with a 970. I'm doing it with most settings at max and FXAA (not sure how much difference the different AA solutions make, though).

SMAA is significantly better looking than FXAA.

Is there a comparison data somewhere that compares various settings and how the game looks when you turn up or down an individual setting? Like difference between TSSAA, SMAA and TAA or lighting ad medium, high and ultra...etc etc
Or even a straight up medium, high, ultra comparison would do.

I don't think there's much difference between Ultra and medium outside of the render distance of lights. Particles look the same to me, same for everything else really.

Ultra with motion blur and CA off. 60fps capped on RTSS @ 1080P all the way. Lol @ getting X1 version with that system.

another steam launch tweak

THere is no NV guide sadly for this game (although I almost expect one when vulkan comes out given how much NV seems to be advertising it).

Regarding ultra and medium, I imagine it will be differences in shadow quality and the amount of shadow casting lights like most consoles game that will be the largest. That and things like AO quality and texture streaming / texture quality. That and smaller things like the quality of the first person view model shadows and motion blur / sof samples.
The texture paging / AF for example is probably pretty low on console if other id tech games are to go by.

One think I noticed was how blocky the shadows that go over the god rays look. There's a particular secret in one of the Hell levels that's shows it very abruptly.

I have everything up to its highest settings and it's still there.

I play on a big 60Hz Plasma TV, so yeah, I'll have to make do with this setup, I thought of overclocking my card, but when I was monitoring it, the game is not really taxing my hardware.

I found a solution, for anyone having issues with drops to 30fps try the following:

1-Turn off In Game VSYNC
2-Turn on triple buffering and Vsync on Nvidia CP

I went from playing on default high settings to Ultra with "Virtual Texturing Page" on high as the only drawback (wich does not have any impact in visuals AFAIK).

This guaranteed 60fps 99% of the time on my setup.

The game does not have god rays to my knowledge in any scenes, nor does it have volumetric lighting. Rather, all bilboard particles (which is all they are) accept lighting and shadow information from any and every light. But these tend to be a bit lower res than the actualy shadow maps themselves, and on console, these are actually extremely low res to the point where micro details (like the chains of link fence) just alias into non-existence. The opening level shows this quite well.

Yeah I didn't know the term. The shafts of light that come through from holes in the caves. When there's shadows on them it looks like Lego

I know they say you should have at least 2GBs of RAM, but is it really that crucial on low?
It's no coincidence that I posted my performance on SF5: the minimum PC requirements for that game are a GTX 480 (which 1.5GBs), and yet I can run the game at 60FPS not on ly on low, but also on mid. People were surprised on the SF5 OT when I told them that.

Isn't there a probability that, although a very different type of game, DOOM will be fine on low for me?

It's worth it whenever the game would otherwise dip under 60fps. Otherwise you will never see full GPU use at a capped framerate.

Yep, precisely what I reported in my original post. Glad you've got things working!

i5 2500k - GTX 960 2gb - 8gb ram DDR3 - very old monitor MAX res 1680x1050

What can I expect with my rig? Any chance to get stable 60 FPS without sacrificing too much level of detail? :)

I have an EVGA GTX 770 SC 4GB, with bloom/blur/CA etc disabled, should I be able to get locked 60 at high settings/1080p? CPU shouldn't be an issue.

same. thats two for me now.
Yeah, weird thing happened earlier - was just thrown onto the desktop and was just about to start raging when I realised that the game was actually still open. Turns out it just paused itself and threw me out to the desktop.

Otherwise good performance - constant 55-60 fps on an i5 6600/ gtx 960 4gb, most settings on high/ultra

I got 5 of these in my whole SP playthrough. It's completely random as fuck. I died and running back to hit the UI terminal to open a door, it did it. Other time it happens during a BFG shot. Happens from nothing to something.

just had my 3rd. yeah it seems pretty random. one thing i noticed though, after returning to my desktop the game on steam starts a quick update. ill try to verify integrity of game cache now to see if that helps.

Yeah, thanks man, still thinking about that over clock though 🤔
