Honestly, the technical side interests me more than the gameplay side. I'm probably buying it anyway at some point, but nothing is gonna top 2016 for me. I'm also not a fan of the big open maps for a Doom game, but we'll see what they do with them.

On one hand this isn't really what I want from a new Doom.

On the other, when considered as just "new id FPS", it looks great and like it's going to be a ton of fun.

I meant more of the newer ones, but I didn't play OG Doom online either to be fair.

More of a Quake man myself back in the day.
Doom 2016 was a weird one, it came at a time where people straight up did not want arena shooters, and even for those who did it had some features that soured them on the game too. it's not a "pure" arena shooter but it's still the best one released in the last decade IMO

they had loadouts, as well as these things called hack modules that you would select every spawn that would give you perks, the whole thing was really messy and the gun balance was off, coupled with the fact that the majority of gamers that played it were coming off a decade of CoD and the newest big thing was overwatch......yeah, i'm not surprised the general public didn't take to it, I'm not even that good and I was slaughtering people at launch because they were all just standing still, trying to regen health, and using the burst rifle since it was the only gun that had ADS so they were familiar with it (it's the worst gun in the game)

after launch, id took over development from certain affinity and removed hack modules and put the most used ones as a perk in the loadouts which helped to clean up the combat, and balanced the guns/demons & added new ones as well as some of the most gorgeous MP maps that exist to date (google doom 2016 boneyard or empyrian)

They were on the right track with it, but then they threw it in the trash to toss their hat in the asymmetrical MP ring with Eternal

To me this looks like a parody of doom, not entirely digging it. I'll gamepass this while I chew on Expedition 33 after i resub this weekend when i get home.

you don't understand what doom is truly all about then. And I am glad all the stupid ass glory kills are gone now.

I've played hundreds of hours of Doom 1 and 2. Doesn't look like the same type of map structure to me, but we'll see for sure when the game is released.

I see what you both mean. I hope that there's some more corridor and building portions of the game then they have shown in the footage. The difference feels like is because is ALL of it seems to be in the open with very few and far between corridor style maps.

Well, there are different kinds of open maps and the ones we've seen from Dark Ages seem more in style of Painkiller or Serious Sam. OG Doom II's more open maps were a lot more complex with a distinct balance between more linear indoor spaces and more open outdoor areas which also had all the locked doors, switches, secrets etc. These DA maps are just huge open arenas where you can run around the same way Geralt runs around fields of Velen.

id just NEVER disappoints. They are on the top for over 30 years.
I kinda regret watching this video, spoiling it but whatever.

Weird that it's a Sony/PS video while they are under MS.

And I like that id just don't give a f about woke bullshit. He just said He/She instead of they/them and they even made fun of some retardness in Eternal.

They are the best.

Yeah that's it. I don't mind open section and there were many in the past, but this seems to be mostly if not all open sections without the intricate and almost labyrinthian closed spaces of the past. Of course we don't know the entire map structure for sure, but this is at least what the developers have chosen to share a few weeks before release.

Ah yes, suburbs, truly the peak of DOOM level design. :lollipop_tongue:

It's fine to like the new game, but I don't buy this "return to roots" thing they are trying to sell here. DOOM was always about tight maze-like level design, and a bunch of shitty levels in the middle section of DOOM II doesn't change that.

"Cosmic Realm" is such a shit name, but I guess this is how they plan to incorporate the many worlds of The Dreamlands.

It doesn't *look* like Quake though, save for the purple sky. It looks a lot more like The Hive environments we see in the Destiny games than anything featured in Q1 or its expansions. Though the arachnid-esque enemy we have seen a bunch from the hands on footage and half way into this trailer does give me Quake 4 Makron vibes.

In the video Hugo says that the Reaver Chainshot projectile is a Chaos Sphere. That might be the first explicit reference to Hexen we've seen.

Bingo, I couldn't think what it reminded me of but the thumbnail image in the OP looks like Croata's End boss room.

Seeing Cthulu got me Quakein' in my boots!

I like seeing them continuing to innovate on the gameplay in significant ways while almost always doing well with it. They got some creative people over there.

They returned to their roots to dig them out and plant something else in it's place. I'm not noticing a big difference in how the game plays between the easier difficulty and nightmare. Color coding enemy projectiles and the seeming lack of feedback from bullets from your gun outside of melee attacks lacks impact.

It has more of that MMO jank that's become so common and you can see that you have your weak trash enemies and the only thing threatening is boss type enemies with cooldown management.

Yeah the slow pace and color coding make it look more like Simon's Says than DOOM, that's for sure. Game looked awesome on the reveal trailer, but once they started showing actual gameplay my hype went from 100 to 0. I loved how in the previous game a single Imp could persecute you through the whole map and fuck you up if you dozzed off for a second or two, which doesn't seem to be the case here anymore.

I guess the game could be fun, I'm not discarding it yet, but it's so far away from what I loved about 16 and Eternal that I'm not sure anymore.

Yeah that sucks. Even in games like Serious Sam or Painkiller the lowest tier enemies can be a threat, which doesn't seem to be the case here. I get the presence of those was a necessity in the previous game since they were basically walking ammo piñatas, but here they seem to be there to increase the power fantasy and nothing else.

Love how Hugo sounds like a child when describing the weapons and saying their names. It's clear that this dude enjoys his job like no one else.

Such a lovely, well rounded, articulate, refined and well mannered chap. Now bring on the fucking bone crunching, blood curdling, gut wrenching cosmic demonic pulp.

This game looks so damn fun. Id you crazy bastards.

I'll pick up DDA when it's on a deep sale. At the end of the day it isn't a Doom 3 type game and I prefer those.

Well fuck it.. so far wasn't impressed really. But then again you don't just get to play a brand new DOOM game every year... so I'm in after all.

ID have invented a new Ludicrous tier of graphics according to the video lol.
ID engine pushes the boundaries everytime and the FPS while doing so is second to none, I question Halo or any Microsoft titles using UE when ID exists in house.

I understand out sourcing but they should be pushing this engine hard.
