With Pugna you basically have to convince your team to push early and hard, you're not gonna outcarry any proper core by farming a bit here and there. Also don't rush an Aghs when they can easily go ahead and kill you while you suck them off, Atos, Euls and Force Staff give you much more utility early on.
For Pugna I like Arcane -> Mek -> Force Staff -> Necrobook > Sheepstick
Edit: Also, what ViviOggi said. You have to knock down their towers fast, otherwise you're pretty much useless.
idk maybe because he has close to exactly 50% winrate in pubs?
now don't get me wrong dotabuff winrates aren't the best balance metric, but when a hero doesn't have an absurd winrate in VH, isn't really a competitive monster, AND has a standard dotabuff winrate... there really isn't much to be complaining about.

got it, his nuking strength is nice early on especially with the tower damage.
With Pugna, positioning is paramount. Not much else matters beyond that. I personally like rushing Aghanim, but I am a very good Pugna so that might not be the best for you. Arcane + Mek + Utility like others have suggested would be easier to pull off. Like Drow, you want to be on the very edge of engagement so that people will be discouraged from going in on you.
The key to playing Pugna is Decrepify usage. It is your single most versatile skill. You can use it to shut down a carry, to add burst to your combo (Blast -> Decrep -> Drain), to save your allies from being focused, to kite, etc. Most of all, you want to be kiting people. PA goes on you? Decrep her and move away, or start draining to scare her off. Being chased? Run up hill and Decrep -> Blast -> Drain. Items like Euls and Force really help with this, you want to be at max Drain range at almost all times.
I disagree with the pushing thing. It's simply the easiest way to play him. Pugna is much more than a tower killer.

I admit he's not OP, but he's just designed to be anti-fun. I probably win around half my games against him, but I know 100% of those games leave me with a migraine. And he gets picked so often that it just makes me not want to play the game at all, because any game that features him puts me in a state of mid of expecting extreme frustration, and then I don't play as well or have any fun. It's not PL, its me.

Applies to snowballing pub only:
Go Mid or somehow convince your team to let you have farm priority.
Don't lose mid.
Get Mana sustain (Bottle), when you hit like 7 get someone to come to you to help secure a mid tower kill (depends who you are vs), nuke wave, nuke tower, get a few autos in, bottle up, repeat. Rune control is super important since it basically means 300+ tower damage. Or go to another lane you can push and kill that tower. Take the ppl in that lane to another lane and kill that tower, kill the last T1.
Have Phase/Arcanes and Dagon by now and go around zapping and zoning everyone while pushing all their T2's.
Ball out of control by one shotting supports.
Pray your carry isn't stupid.

I'm trying to learn Centaur, and most guides suggest building tranquil boots -> magic wand -> hood of defiance -> blink dagger -> pipe of insight. However, most of those guides are from before the tranquil boots rebalance, so I was wondering if this build is still relevant.
Also, what are good extension items beyond that core? Is blademail good? Armlet? Heart? Assault Cuirass? Veil?

Tranquil are still good on centaur, you need to regen the hp lost from double edge

Makes sense. What about building hood of defiance first for regen/double edge recoil, and then getting power treads for extra attack speed?
I like that the hood has a nice buildup with strong health regen, but I'll keep it in mind.
You usually want to get blink before hood, you'll be able to initiate way better that way. Don't get power treads. Tranquil is good enough until you eventually buy boots of travel if the game goes late game. If you want attack speed, get mjolnir so you get attack speed and the active that zaps everyone who attacks you.

Yeah not all of them are worth owning. There are two with unique particles iirc, I think Void is one.
