Character models aside, it holds up quite well. Just don't expect something at the level of Baldur's gate 3 as far as complexity goes, but the combat is still quite nice and tactical. Stay away from 2, Inquisition is fine but very repetitive and has more of a modern open world approach filled with icons that mostly waste your time.

Origins is the best.
Visually it probably doesn't hold up (I remember the console version was pretty ugly even back then) but the story and characters are still enjoyable and the gameplay feels more "classic" Bioware than stuff like Mass Effect.
2 feels like they asked the interns to make a sequel in a third of the time and with a fifth of the budget of the original.
Inquisition (3) has the best production values (the music in particular is great) but the story and gameplay are meh.

i thought it was ambitious, & interesting, but i'm also the guy who could never finish either it or the second game, but really enjoyed/replayed inquisition...

I played the 360 version of Origins on my Series S the beginning of 2021. I managed to have a good time with it but it is very dated. So much so I thought it was Biowares game before Mass Effect not after, it has not aged well. If you can get passed the visuals and the janky looking interface it's a great game though.

Dragon Age Origins is very dated, but is still the best game of the franchise because of the CRPG aspect. If you want to play Dragon Age, you need to have that i mind. Whomever Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition hold up very well.
If you plan to start Dragon Age, also get Dragon Age 2 because the story if very important for Inquisition and it carries over.
The LORE of the Dragon Age series is absolutely fantastic. So if you want to get around the dated aspects, you need to get into the story.
Also, in order to carry your choices from DA2 to Inquisition, you need to use Dragon Age Tapestry. This also very conveninent because you can pick the best outcomes without having to play 100 hours of DA:O and DA: II https://dragonagekeep.com/

Don't forget that they wanted every time you press a button something awesome to happen. Great design philosophy for a CRPG sequel.

It literally took me 9 years of off and on playing to finish inquisition, every map is the same shit over and over again; I wish more of the game was like deep roads or trespasser, of course you don't need all that power to finish the game, and you can just kinda beeline the main story, but the completionist in me is not going to finish an RPG without trying to do everything.
