Here's another one, which I'm sure you'll also dismiss. I have a coworker who was tortured in prison in Cuba because he didn't want to re-enlist in the military when his time was up. Does that settle it?

Personal freedoms, including freedom of speech, have always been an individualist preoccupation of right-wing liberal (in the traditional sense) politics and are part of the same big-state vs. small-state debate that encapsulates gun ownership, deregulation, and many other things. It is the centrepiece of the individualist vs. collectivist delineation which historically split political thinking but is now largely ignored.

Famously, this is not true of the left
