In my opinion, the heroes in movies, games, and books need to be handsome, attractive, or charismatic because they represent the ideal that the viewer, player, or reader aspires to be.
I think it's fine to include options that represent all kinds of people in games, but this isn't The SIMS, it's not a life simulator, this is medieval fantasy. You shouldn't be aiming to represent a diverse society; it should be about heroes, villains, and fantastic creatures, and we all know these are idealized characters, which makes total sense.
Dragon Age, like many others in recent years, is making a mistake by following this path so strongly.
