Looks like no one on GAF is going to play it.

We may never know how the game actually is.
Plenty of people on gaf will buy and play it. People that voice hash opinions against games like this usually get banned from other platforms, so they all come to one place to voice their opinions. It might give the false impression that everyone here thinks the same way, when its actually showing other places are just censoring one opinion over the other.

I'm not very keyed in to which reviewers are supposed to be overpaid shills giving out handjobs to corporations and which ones are the revered spirits of holy objectivity, but I deliberately went out of my way to find a review on the lower end, just to see what stood out. This one on VG247 gave it a 3/5, so I gave it a read. So far they definitely make a point about the game feeling narratively slow at times, and how it's sure to be divisive in the ways that it definitely is, but I really liked this paragraph:

I really like a videogame-ass video game, so I definitely took this part of the review as a positive, along with "most rich game out of 2010 you can possibly imagine."

Something about that makes me wish Super Best Friends were still together. I'd love to see Matt & Pat put a couple dozen episodes into goofing through this thing, it seems like a great game for that kind of content.
It's a shame this thread is too busy culture warring to discuss the game as a whole. I appreciate your posts and your perspective, as someone who was looking forward to reviews to decide whether I wanted to play Veilguard at launch or wait for a sale. I do worry that the kind of gameplay I didn't mind or even enjoyed in 2010 might feel dated or annoying now. For me, Dragon Age was at its best when it was telling human stories about finding hope and a way forward amid a depressingly dark story. And Skill Up's review makes me worry that the overall tone might be too positive. On the other hand, I love big lore bombs and I get the impression that there are a lot to be found in this game.

I am so tired of this over dramatized bullshit about video games of all things. It's both sides honestly, has me debating quitting gaming altogether.

If it degrades your enjoyment of the hobby, unplug from game forums and media for a while. See if that helps. I did that back in 2018 and noticed a big difference.

Personally, I'm finding this thread a lot of fun. GAF excels when it finds a punching bag. I've had a lot of laughs in this thread. But if it's getting to you, unplug from forums/media and just play the games. See if your experience changes.

...I tried it again in 2019, and was starting to enjoy it but my wife had a baby and I got really busy and dropped it.

The baby?

and if you think the culture war is annoying, just wait for real fans and real gamers to destroy this bioware game in the comings weeks and months; im talking about marathonic video essays discussing every single aspect (lore included). it's going to be brutal.

This is some S-tier content. We are so close to going full Alex Jones on who is really pushing the woke mind virus. La Li Lu Le Lo?

I’m curious to see the contrast now. Lots of positive reviews sounding like a briefing versus the real reactions from regular players.

Word of mouth and the internet are going to be interesting over the next few days—will people really find those 9/10 ratings they promised?

It's been bothering me how the characters look has been reminding me of something for days and it finally accorded to me what it was....

Fucking Sims 4.
That inoffensive, Pixar bland look where everyone might have some sort of tism.

I mean haven't you heard? This game is a return to form for Bioware. 20 reviews told me so and so did the press release from EA that they received.

Why would a press release lie to us? Doesn't the screenshots in this very thread with this caliber of writing harken back to Bioware's glory days?

Oof, people are just so cynical now. Just turn off your mind, buy it, and enjoy the flashing predominantly purple colored images. But it's most important that you buy it. I can't stress that enough. Bring money.

I don't know how many more times it will take to learn the lesson. Studios are not a constant. People leave, in this case almost everyone who made Bioware great has left. It's over, don't waste time wishing for a comeback that will never happen. I spent years hoping the next Call of Duty or Assassins Creed game would actually come close to their 360 era peak, and they never have.

The creatives have left the room, all that is left are sales people and hr diversity hires.

Yeah, probably a good idea. I see resetera is banning reviewers and people as always. They are weird, although I think most aren't over there, they just stay quiet because they will get banned. I have never seen a place so strict and over moderated as that place. It's very odd.

Yeah, we had a little girl, and the baby kept me away from gaming for awhile. A lot of late nights, lack of sleep on top of working full-time.

When was the last time he was critical about the story and writing of a game? Even for games where this is a major problem, like FFXVI, he basically always says "I liked the story."

He's far more critical when the game he's reviewing is from a smaller publisher or an indie game.

I dunno if somebody posted it before but I found this in reddit lol:

mckmas8808

Mckmaster uses MasterCard to buy Slave drives
So all said and done, looks like the game has settled on an 83 aggregate, which is a few points higher than I thought it would end up at.

For Bioware's sake, I hope it does decently commercially as well.

So it'll probably settle around an 80 once regular reviews get their hands on it. So it's a decent (C+) level game. Good to know.

The last Bioware game I got into was the Mass Effect Trilogy. I tried DA: Inquisition back in 2016, but couldn't get into it. I tried it again in 2019, and was starting to enjoy it but my wife had a baby and I got really busy and dropped it. I here the combat in this game is lackluster which is concerning. I don't pay much attention to the silly stupid shit coming from this forum and elsewhere about the usual "woke" crap people love to cry about.

I most likely will never play this at least for the foreseeable future, as I still have Balder's Gate 3 and Dragon's Dogma 2 to play.

Same happened to me for a moment last year. Being away from GAF for a month or so helped.

No, I didn't drop the baby. Lol
Sorry, I have been really sick, and foggy lately.

It was very clear before the reviews even went live what the reaction would be here. Negative review? Incredible work of games journalism, last bastion of hope in a dying industry, my personal hero. Positive review? Choose one or more: biased shill, woke, gay or trans reviewer, can't trust this, wait for user reviews.

Now granted, some of the memes are funny. But the conversation in this thread isn't exactly Shakespeare. And those marathonic video essays aren't more legitimate than a positive review (or video essay) just because you agree with their thesis. It's just unfortunate because I do think there's room for legitimate criticism here that doesn't boil down to "go woke go broke". Like the dialogue being condescending to the player's intelligence or the controversial (but still a matter of preference) art style that I don't love. And like I mentioned in a prior thread about this game, I do think it's a mistake to have options like top surgery scars in the character creator but exclude the ability to make well endowed breasts or butts. Those bodies also exist and should be represented in an RPG with such an otherwise solid character creator.

It's very bad faith to ask people to discuss "the game" when "the game" is ALL about gender ideology. This is not a videogame but a bunch of lame RPG elements attached to a propaganda piece.

The fact that you can't design your character as you like and there are only dialogue options that align with the writer's mental illness tells everything you need to know.

It's unfortunate that you missed all the legitimate criticism and instead chose to attack those who don't like the last game with childish MCU-Tik Tok writing , terrible graphics and animations and braindead gameplay.

Please buy into this sexual fantasy of a game director; let’s all pretend this is the medieval fantasy you wanted too. Keep going with it, keep pretending, society is now one big fantasy, everyone is pretending—even that women are men, and men are women. 10/10

I am so tired of this over dramatized bullshit about video games of all things. It's both sides honestly, has me debating quitting gaming altogether.

As someone else noted, the problems i not gaming, it’s forums, Reddits, social media etc. where discourse has long been dominated by extreme opinions that drown everything else out. That has been made worse the past decade plus with it evolving into left vs. right, woke vs. anti-woke views on everything, and every game, movie etc. site out there is pretty much leaning strongly to one side or the other. Be it from sites like Era aggressively banning views outside their group think to folks self selecting into sites, content providers etc. who share their views.

With limited time, especially for you with a kid etc., cut back on that stuff and spend more time just playing whatever games you feel like. Or not playing anything if you don’t feel like it and picking gaming back up when the interest returns. Everyone gets burned out on hobbies and needs breaks sometimes. Just make sure you’re actually burnt out on gaming and not just the online gaming community. I’ve enjoyed gaming a ton more since I cut way back on how much I read and post online about gaming a few years back.

To be fair, it’s that way everywhere. The people who just want to play and enjoy games mostly stay out of culture war type threads. Even over on Era with all their bitching about “sexualized” designs and hatred of Stellar Blade the game still had a very active OT of people really enjoying the game. I’m sure Dragon Age Veilguard will have decent activity in the OT here as well—relatively speaking since few OTs tend to get a lot of activity here it seems (I only recently returned again). I’m looking forward to playing it and will post some in the OT (though not a ton as I just usually don’t have a ton I feel is worth sharing about games I’m playing).

But yeah, in general the online gamer community mostly sucks these days as most every forum, sub-Reddit etc. is dominated by a vocal minority of people from whichever side that are mostly there to rant and rave about culture war stuff who seem to barely play games or watch movies etc. as they’re just terminally online making thousands of posts a year etc. Best to just get some amusement from glancing at that stuff and otherwise just focus on skimming for news and posting some in OTs when playing games you’re enjoying etc.

Life is enough of a struggle without opting into negativity online IMO, regardless of what side one falls on.

I see culture wars as a maturation of the hobby. Sports for years have "enjoyed" television debate programming, message board discussions, bitter rivalries, ect ect. Video gaming is now firmly out of the realm of pure product hyping. With the state of games as it is, I derive far more enjoyment from the discourse than actually playing most AAA titles.

Great advice. I recently deleted my social media accounts with all the negativity, especially with the election coming up. It's all bad for my mental health and distracts from the more positive aspects of my life.

That’s the way to go. It can be hard to focus on the positive in life for sure, so it’s good to take some time and reflect on what silly things we opt into that are negatives and are easy to drop once realized.

In my Steam region the first Red Dead overtook Veilguard by multiple spots, and is above it globaly too at the moment. Will be interesting to watch how this develops.
That’s normal. New games see a huge bump on chart when they drop. Veilguard will jump to #1 when it drops and hang there for a few days.
