Dragon Quest 6 DS |OT| of Tax-Free 2DS Valentine's Slime Curling

Brandon F said:
Yea, I am just gonna forgo the casino rewards. I really hope Horii just drops this stupid diversion in the future of DQ. Does anyone enjoy even 'gaming' this stuff for equipment? Wouldn't we rather earn that content through better means? (Dungeons! Optional bosses!)

And yea, I got nothing from clearing all 5-6 slime curling courses in the first major town. Not bothering again myself either as more pop up later.
You'd be happy to know that there is no Casino in IX then.

But I love the Casinos. It can be annoying, but I like the diversion sometimes since it's a nice change of pace from battles and dungeons, plus I have been hella lucky with it in DQIV especially.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Loving how weird and silly the plot is so far.
About to take on Mudo after discovering the King is really the Queen! The mystery with the two worlds, and the time shifting, and the dual realities...what is going on?! Very goofy stuff

Totally mind-blown at the incidental party chat too. I thought it was just a way to remind the player of the current objective between major story beats, but the fact it updates after every NPC conversation?? Insane. Of course I now can't stop reading party commentary on every dumb thing, but I completely missed that stuff in DQV. SMH

Why can't I get into the church in Amor? I think I just futzed around town long enough? (I'm hoping this isn't a spoiler considerings its so vague and early in the game). I'm miraculously stuck here for some reason.

You need to talk to everyone.

That's really it? I thought I did that. I completed the prince stuff in Somnia and I don't think there's anything else I'm missing before that. This is freaking strange. Let's try again...

Loving this game so far. I'm only about 5 hours in, but it's grabbed me far more than DQ9 has in that timeframe.

Surprised at how many people looking back have put DQ4 at the lower end of their lists too. Though I still haven't finished this or DQ5, all three DS classics are pretty much equally fantastic I've found.

Maybe my tune will change on DQ6 in hour 30. Seems a lot of people in this thread, enjoy this, but fell off in love as the game progressed.

I think the reason people have fallen off of this game as the thread goes along, is because there are a few parts where your world GREATLY expands (due to new vehicles) and you're not really beaten over the head of where to go... the game has a massive world packed with stuff to do, and there are a lot of people who just prefer more linear games.

I'm still playing, grinding away even as I type :p I will hopefully beat the game next week and then can concentrate on the postgame. Any great places to fight metals to level up quickly?

The casinos are a worthwhile diversion for me. Actually, my wife loves playing slots, so it's cool to be able to hand it off to her to gamble away. I hate that it has to play the various musical fanfares anytime you win, though.

Yea, I just hit a point in the game where the world sort of opens up in a less linear fashion. It's very abrupt too, given how focused the progression has been so far.
You killed Murdaw and saved the world, now go find your 'other frozen self' somewhere, anywhere, I dunno!

It wouldn't be as awkward if the random battles were scaled back. Proposing the player to "go explore the world with a vague task!" is less charming with encounters every 5 steps. It's bugged me a bit too in the game recently.

Still liking the game a lot regardless though. The vignettes are nice, and watching the
Terry/Dragon duel
made me wish to see a DQ game where the combat engine looked like THAT all the time!

Can anyone explain to me what is going on with my healers. Milly I put into wagon 20hrs in because half the time she would not obey me. Now I am at last boss forms and Nevan is telling jokes and doing stupid stuff instead of following my commands. Must be some style/skill set I am low on that causes this?

Finally started DQ6.

It always feels good starting a new DQ (well, new to me anyway) but it's sad to think this is the last remake until they decide to do something with DQ7, which will be the last gem I need to hunt down after this.

Good times ahead.

Gadabout class. Change them to something else.

I just got the flying bed, its cutscene is very cool! The cliffs prior to that were a little hard though. But that's probably because Nevan and Milly have low HP and defense due to their classes (Mage and Dancer).

I'm going to look into those classes now, any ideas for useful classes? My hero has finished warrior and I was thinking about Martial Artist for him now.

Are there any good, free online guides that explain all the classes in detail?

Game got alot more addictive for me once Alltrades Abbey opens.

I'm not proud of it but I just did a shitload of overleveling and vocation grinding.

Nevan is a one nerd army with MP to spare and everybody has enough healing spells and buffs to make them damn near untouchable. Love it.

I had Nevan master mage and priest as soon as possible so he can have access to sage and become your ultimate mage, he's pretty amazing.

I had Milly, Ashlynn and Healie do the same, giving them some useful backup/emergency support.

I had Carver master Warrior, Martialist and then Gladiator.

Amos, martial artist and then priest, unlocking the paladin for him.

I pretty much saddled the hero with utility skills via Thief and Merchant, then picked monster master and unlocked Ranger which allowed me to unlock the hero class which gives you some of the classic endgame DQ main character badassery.

The main character is the only one that gets early access to the hero class, I believe the others have to master more than one tier two class to get it.

I've played and beaten 4, 5, and 8. Just curious because I hear 9 does away with random battles.

Should I play this or 9 first?

9 is a very different game, by Dragon Quest standards. But if this helps:

6 would have a longer story to the primary ending.

9 has a shorter, breezier main story, but an equal amount of post game content with tons of extra quests to do. Very non-linear.

Depends on what ya feel like right now.

Heh, well... enemies are visible. They still pop up randomly, sometimes right on top of you.

I've slowly been making my way through this - a little bit of play time each day or every few days. I just got
the flying bed
which has opened up the world a lot and makes me feel a bit less nervous about the length - I was getting concerned that I'd put some time in, yet almost none of the map was covered. I feel the pacing on this one is a bit slower than 4 and 5 - I remember racing through those in a few days, where this has been a bit more pick up and play for me, probably because it's a bit more open-ended at this point in the game. The plot has its moments - best parts for me are usually
talking to people in the same location in the real and dream worlds, and figuring out who's dreaming what, or how their dreams play out. I thought it was a nice touch to have the bed-ridden boy dream of traveling the world in his bed.

I like the class system, but it kind of makes me nostalgic for DQ9 - maybe I'll do another playthrough of that after I'm finished with this one.

I'm still making my way through this... grinding job levels while reading GAF. Hopefully soon I can call it a day and finally go fight the end guy and do Slimopolis. Probably this weekend if all goes well... I have a ton of great portable games I'm interested in trying now that my class is wrapping up and I'm in contract.

Good to see people still playing this. Saw it at Best Buy the other night alongside DQ9 and both were still $35. I've been in a gaming rut ever since I finished this. With no mainline DQs to play, it's left a pretty big void. Tried playing FF4 PSP and lost steam after about 10 hours. Might have to go back and play through 5 again.

I'm in the same boat. I haven't bought a game since Dragon Quest 6 and have only a few games I'm looking forward to. Just started a replay of DQ7, though. :)

Finally beat
Nokturnus
and thank god for the duplic hat. There was no way in hell multiheal was going to get the job done in that fight without it.

He gives you some sass afterwards about not beating him fast enough but seriously, screw it. I won, he lost and that finishes up all the content so I'm done with the game.

Overall, fun game but probably the weakest entry in the series for me so far. This was the DQ that had the unfortunate task of following and trying to top V which there was no chance in hell of happening.

Next up, DW:Monsters 1&2 and DWVII.

Maybe I am not at that point yet in the game, but how do you change classes? My main is lvl 25 and has barely any spells.
You seem a bit highly leveled to have not been in Alltrades Abbey yet - I think my levels were in the teens when I first switched. Have you
beaten Murdaw yet? I think Alltrades Abbey opens up in the dream world once you beat him.

Finished the game today - I liked it, but I agree with previous comments about it being a slightly weaker entry, albeit still a good game. After DQV, the plot and characters for this seemed very back to basics, though I did like the little parallels and connections the game drew between the two worlds.

One thing that was confusing for me was why
everyone guilt trips you over Captain Rusty's death and goes on and on about how tragic it was he died before your return. Just seemed like an odd part of the story, like you were supposed to later find out he was alive or something (or revive him - I got a real FFVI General Leo vibe). Also, why does his counterpart, Captain Blade, still live in the dream world? The same goes for Ashlynn and people from the other "sealed off" locations too. Were the people at Alltrades Abbey, Sorceria, Medford's Manor, etc. all actually killed in the real world, but they can still exist as dreams? And if the dream counterparts / souls can live after death, why did the monsters threaten the Hero and the Hero's dream counterpart when they attacked the town - I thought they said something about both dying if one was killed.
Sorry for the rambling questions; I'm probably overthinking it.

So now I've completed all DQ mainline games (or versions of them) except DQVII, which is the last on my list. I'm a bit apprehensive about that one given its length - seems like a real commitment. From what I've read, the class system in that seems pretty similar to the one here (tiered system, areas have level caps, etc.)

I have DQ IV, V & VI but haven't started any of them yet. Which would you recommend starting first? I assume there is not a continuing story through the three games?

If you have all three, you might as well start with 4 and go in the order they were released. There's no solid connecting story, only a mythos, which is well-established in 4.

I would play in order anyhow. DQ6 is delightfully painful, vague and open which could be overwhelming without a few dqs in the belt.

Agreed. You'll also get to see the subtle ways in which Arte Piazza improved their engine over the course of these games, which is cool to see.

My memory is really vague, especially after recently going through DQ4 (arghhh, can't be Psaro!). I remember that part being sort of a bitch. You can use this guide: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ds/942424-dragon-quest-vi-realms-of-revelation/faqs/61854. Ctrl+F "extra.002" to skip to the section about the part you're having trouble with. The general consensus is to use Milly and make sure you use combinations of equipment that give bonus style points. Best of luck!

I think the second level of the contest is men only, though, so you have to have a male character (likely the hero) with high style points as well to progress. I think if you're above 240 you can clear the first three levels.

Go to the Fashion Forge (it's on an island at the southern end of the map) and upgrade equipment like the Iron Mask - I think the forge took it from a -10 to a +35 (so 45 added style points). If you wear it with some other good armor and accessories you should be fine - I didn't have to use Pretty Betsies or anything.

Thanks! Did it. I had to rebuy some stuff.
Another question. I found all the
legendary equipment
.
I want to take a break from the story and grind a bit. My hero is 29 and the others less than that and I need to unlock the special jobs. What is the best place for exp?
Also I have hero master the three jobs to get the ranger class, Milly priest, mage>sage and Carver/Amos going for gladiator. Is this ok?

I dunno, it's pretty idiot proof until around hour 20 when you can pretty much freely explore. But yes, while DQ5 is the fan favorite, you really can't go wrong with any of them. They are all equally entertaining, charming, and deliver uniquely whimsical narratives and worlds to explore. Any real superiority one title has over another is the subjective 'plot/character' attachment...which is understandable why DQ5 often wins. But really, I adore what DQ4 and 6 deliver with the narrative almost equally as much.

My biggest complaint railed against all three DS games(and DQ in general) is that the encounter rate is obscene(exploring underwater now and good god is it a test of patience). Combat most often boils down to spamming the same few attacks, while -dozens- of other useless skills bloat up your battle menus.

It's just a nitpick though, combat is usually resolved so quickly, and if you have your patience level in check, it's rarely a dealbreaker. Would be nice if a future DQ game could really try to integrate a purpose for skills outside of 'nuking/buffing'. One aspect FF has succeeded at with more recent entries.

It's been a few months since this game has been released, but I've finally tracked a copy of it ( and of 9). I'm sure by now everyone ha processed the experience and can give an honest postmortem. So what did you guys think of this game? Is it worth the full asking price?

For those who have the time, they can weigh in impressions of 9 too.

I'm in the game store right now, so I hope I can get a quick feedback.

(I also intend to play the games on my 3DS, so I hope both look and play great on it)

Still probably worth full price, though.

To be completely honest...
The Super Famicom version of 6 is one of my absolute favorites. The DS version doesn't measure up. I'm not surprised to see people iffy on it, because I really feel like it's missing something when I play it. The vignettes don't feel as weighty, the music isn't as good... I don't know if there are any other reasons but it's really sad that it tuned one of my favorite games of all time into a game I almost didn't finish.

Would I still recommend it? Well, yes. At its core, the game is still DQ6 and still worth playing. Especially since an English speaker doesn't have a better option.

This is really interesting and kind of resonates with me. DQVI is one of those Super Famicom games I've sort of mythologized since back in the day when I first saw it in magazines, hoping for it to come out in America. Eventually I played my friend's import copy but despite being impressed by the graphics, music and general mood and feel, I just couldn't enjoy myself playing in another language and stopped after a few hours.

Then over the years, people on the internet seemed to agree that DQV is the game I should have been excited about all along, and so eventually I resolved to somehow play that instead, despite a lingering fondness for DQVI. I would like to try both, but for a bunch of dumb little reasons the DS remakes don't feel right to me and I don't want my first experience with either game to be on that system. I'll get the chance to play DQV once I get a computer powerful enough to emulate the PS2 version, but like you said there's no perfect way for me to play DQVI yet.

Of course, no one should base their purchasing decisions on my idiosyncratic weirdness, I'm sure the DS version is perfectly fine for most people's needs. I was just kinda interested to see your feelings are vaguely similar to mine.

Like all main entry in the series, it's worth playing but it's probably my least favorite entry in the series so far.

It's packed with some decent ideas and alot of party chatter but none of it particularly stood out. After all the amazing stuff you could do in DQV (
start out as a kid, grow up and raise monsters, choose a wife, start a family and become a fricking king a good while before you get close to the final boss battle as epic DQ theme plays and best of all get your own lil badass children
), it's just hard not to be mad at DQVI and to a certain extent the other sequels for being just another Dragon Quest and traditional adventure.

I don't think it's fair to call 6 "just another Dragon Quest" (what does that even mean?) because it was the first game in the series to really focus on vignettes. If any game in the series is close to another game, it's 7 as an extension of everything in 6.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I ended up buying it, simply because it's my only chance of playing this entry, and I really don't wanna miss out on a main entry, and well, because it's a Dragon Quest game.

But the feedback is still appreciated. I wonder if I'd end up feeling exactly the same way though, since I haven't played the original and can't really compare the two releases.

It has all the trademarks of the series but none of it's themes or features really stood out, the
dream
world was a cool idea but not really as interesting in execution, the characters were alright, particularly Carver and Amos but by the end, aside from quirky party chat humor, they didn't mean much to me other than spots to fill up vocations with to get my main character to the hero job quicker.

DQ4 had the chapters, DQV the generational storytelling and monster parties, DQ6 had a basic job system to accumulate skills and two different worlds to play with, neither particularly engaging.

Honestly, I missed the misadventures into haunted houses and fairly lands, I missed Harry, I missed Pankraz and I missed Sancho, the family and even Tuppence.

The only DQ that had any vignettes I really enjoyed was a few in DQV and almost all in DQ9, the first time I actually found myself actually drawn into the struggles and hopes of the various settlements.

DQVI also got rid of Treasures and Trapdoors. Thats criminal, I need my T and T to live, man.

(haven't played DQVII yet, should have it by next month)

I can't really pinpoint anything disgustingly wrong with DQ6, my interest just seemed to wane as I approached the end.

Maybe 500+ hours of DQ9 just wore me out.
