Dragon Quest 6 DS |OT| of Tax-Free 2DS Valentine's Slime Curling

The final form of the final boss is still busting my balls.

Does it ever run out of MP to stop Kazinging itself?

Only the left hand casts kazing. Get both hands down a good amount of health, then kill the left one first and then the right one.

Okay, so here I am, with a sealed copy of DQ6 on my bed because it was on clearance at Target for $17. Of course, word of mouth about this title in particular seems to go all over the place on other parts of the net. And I can't say that I have the best experience with Dragon Quest games; I managed to beat 8, somehow, despite being mindlessly bored with it. Nine is okay, but I ended up losing interest because, again, not much was actually happening and not having a party of actual characters started to work against things for me after about 20 hours of play time.

Given how I have not played through 4 or 5 yet, should I just start on those first, or would DQ6 be a good start regardless?

I would recommend playing 5.

The DS version of 6 makes me so angry. It finally lets people play one of my favorite DQ games in English - awesome! But unfortunately the DS version itself is not very good compared to the original game. I do think it's worth playing, absolutely - it's still one of the best games on DS - but of the DQ games on DS, 5 is the best by far so if you haven't played that, it's what you should try your hardest to play!

Fair enough. I'll just go get a refund on DQ6 for now (since the amazon price is pretty similar right now, so it wouldn't be hard to get it again in the future, maybe even for cheaper) and focus on getting DQ 5 somewhere. Such a shame that all my local stores always seem to never have it.

You'll probably want to play DQ6 after DQ5 (if you like DQ5). :)

You're just trying to get me to keep this and buy more DQ games just because of your 8-2 ties!

But seriously, after thinking it over, I might keep DQ6 for now (that, and I have 90 days to return it). It looks more appealing than DQ4 for some reason, so I probably won't end up getting 4. But I might as well just get DQ5 from amazon at this point.

Keep DQVI. They're all worth playing, it's just that VI is the weakest of the three for many people (myself included). But it's absolutely worth a playthrough.

You really should get DQIV as well. DQV is easily the best of the three though.

If DQ4 had party chat, I'd undoubtedly place it above DQ6 :p You should play the trilogy; they're a solid set of games!

Of course you should keep DQ6. Do you really need the 17 dollars that badly?

Probably not that badly, but it would have most likely went straight into getting DQ5 and by which the time I would have completed that game, DQ6 potentially could have been even cheaper than that on amazon. (With that said, most likely not by much)

Been playing this for a few days now. I remember playing the fan translation when that was released and I loved it.
Couldn't get past real world Mudo.
Well, I just passed that by this morning and it was very easy, no grinding required.

But now I'm kinda wondering about the game. I went to Alltrades and got jobs, sailed around, found Scrimsly, seemingly did everything there, then went an got reason seeds. When I got them Carver said everyone had mentioned them, but I'd never heard of them before and don't know what to do with them. The fortune teller didn't tell me anything -- gave me the switch worlds spells, but that doesn't switch me in the same spot. I have no idea what I should be doing at this point, and that's a little discouraging. Otherwise I've really enjoyed the game.

Edit: Nevermind, went back to the fortune teller and she helped me out. :)

One way or another I resolve to finally beat this game before the end of the year.

I've read that
Lizzie
is good. Do I need to have her at a comparatively high level? She's currently level 11.

If I'm mistaken you're supposed to use the seeds of reason to
recruit Amos. Btw, if you told him about his condition he leaves Scrimsly and you can't find him. He is an optional party member...if I'm not mistaken Megamorphasis is unique to him (it is sort of like Puff)

Lizzie

Somewhat; levels kind of slowly to start out.
She gets Kazing sometime (level 25) which along with insane durability from being Dragon class is handy. Extremely slow though.
I personally found that useful for
Wiping out grunts with C-c-cold breath and grinding metal king slimes with metal slash. Might have swapped her in for an emergency revive sometime in the final battle, considering it was her or the motte slime as my 8th member...
.

But for the final battle. You need sages as two spells
multiheal and insulate
are absolutely essential and a third helps for a while
Summon spirits as it'll act as a 5th party member who you can't revive, control, nor see their health (but you can buff and heal them)
. I guess if you recruited the
healsime
then
omniheal
is better?

Building EXP (though the final fight is won with strategy, attrition and a bit of luck as much as levels) I'd say fight where you fight
Metal King Slimes
(outside the final dungeon) and
if they flee, use the sands of time; so you want to fight them in groups with other things. I think its 30,000 EXP a kill so 10 kills gets Lizzie to level 25 and Kazing learned

Victory! It's a Christmas miracle!

Yeah, I could have done that a lot earlier with a bit of common sense. Kind of embarrassing, really.

45 hours, lol.

Man, that ending went on a bit. Still, it was probably for the best. If they left it up to me to
re-visit all the significant locations/people
I would probably have missed something.

Funnily enough, now that I'm done with VI I feel emotionally ready for the next mainline game. Yes, even X.

I'm holding off on calling DQ10 a mainline game. They might call it FF11, but it ain't no mainline FF to me.

That being said, congrats on finishing 6! I felt no desire to go after the extra boss, since the ending felt kinda meh to me.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I just picked up this game after my DQV love. It feels like DQVI, though I have a few questions:

1. How long does it take to beat the game (non-completionist)? I finished DQV in 25 hours.
2. Who are your permanent party members?
3. I hear this game doesn't really fare similar to the greatness of DQV, how come?

1. It's quite longer than DQV, so expect 35hrs minimum.
2. The six main + several other recruitables. Up to 16 off the top of my head (DS version)
3. I disagree. But then again what I love most about DQ are the little stories that you encounter along your journey. DQV has a charming overall story, but DQVI has charming vignettes all over and a huge overworld and deeper gameplay. I also really enjoy the cast in DQVI for some reason.

Being not quite as good as DQV isn't the worst crime in the world, seeing as DQV is one of my favourite games.

Compared to V, VI just felt a bit... flabby. Too much landmass and too little focus for me.

Great music and fun characters, though. Which at least elevates it above IX.

Every time I see someone disappointed with DQ6, I want to cry because odds are that it's the DS version's fault. :(

What's with the DS version?

i can safely assume that DQV and DQVI are much better than DQIX.

It's just a substandard port. The excellent pacing of the original isn't represented well in the DS version, so the vignettes - the heart and soul of the game - come across as less meaningful. There are a number of other issues (like the loss of graphical charm), but that was the most major one for me.

DQV DS, on the other hand, is quite excellent.

Edit: I should point out that the game is still really great and worth picking up, of course. It's Dragon Quest! It's just not as good as the SFC version.

I put more time into DQ6 on the DS than I did DQ4 and DQ5... probably combined. Mostly because of building jobs/classes. In the end, it's my least favorite of the 3, but I still very much enjoyed my time with it.

Which sucks, since everything I've heard is that the English patch is pretty terrible. If only I'd stuck with my Japanese classes in college... (or gone to J-school like my friends as a kid).

So I'm playing dq6.
A gryphon monster during took away (not killed) a character from the party.
I won the battle but said character isn't with me anymore.
She isn't in the wagon too.
Am i missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Edit:
Found her.
What a silly design choice.

After a long hiatus (bought the game at launch) I finally completed DQVI.
Had to "grind" a few classes (Hero's seventh skill is very useful against the third form of the final boss) but after 59 hours I've done almost everything in the game (except finding the last 5 mini medals, mastering every class and beating the optional boss).

Is it me or is the optional dungeon and boss the harder of the three DS remakes?

Overall great game that I'm very happy to be able to play in italian (liked the translation).
Vignettes were quite good (I adore the adventure feel of DQ) and the (3) map(s) vastness impressed me.

I would rank the 4 mainline DQ that appeared on DS as follow:
4 (sucks no party chat)> 5 >6 (sucks no beautiful pixel graphics) > 9

Cannot wait for Dragon Quest VII on 3DS (please Nintendo).

Congrats on beating it! For some reason, I felt completely uncompelled to do any postgame in DQ6. You talking about it is making me want to play it again. We're going on vacation at the end of the week, so it might be a fun one to revisit.

I didn't do any of the post-game in IV, V, or VI.

I guess I kinda made up for it by spending hundreds of hours with the IX post-game content.

I'm currently playing this game for the first time.

Damn some parts are sad. The fying bed, amor .... I hope i don't get to experience another sad story.

I tought 3 was kinda sad with you finding that thing on the last dungeon....

I'm playing this on and off atm, mainly at weekends. I've started it a couple of times before since I bought it but always trailed off, I find it a little more obtuse in your objectives than most other DQs.

Had to look up a few things in a FAQ as to where to go next, that I'm sure people who've played it before could say "Oh you know to go there or warp here because so-and-so in the village tells you" - but I've been stumped a few times as to what to do next.

Right now I'm at
Arkbolt and the Underpass
, well just did them. So far, I don't really feel it's one of the strongest DQs, the characters don't really appeal to me in the way they did in say 4,5,8 - but even a weaker DQ still has all the hallmarks of the series, so it's easy to like. I did like the part where
You go to the area from the intro and defeat Murdaw and he sends you back to the dreamworld, only this time you realise it's a dream
- quite clever, and I wondered what the reception to this was when it was originally released for SFC, I imagined it was quite unique at the time?

Just started DQ VI today.

(Initially I wanted to start last October, but Chrono Trigger and life got in the way).

Only played for half an hour and took my hero Glenn (as mentioned I played CT again) to haggle the price for his village goods and then fell down a huge hole.

So far, so good. I am enjoying this first small part and had to chuckle when I, as a ghost (?) walked to church where the priest didn't hear me, so the game asked me if I wanted to "quietly sneak in a quick prayer".

Any tips for the beginning?

Nothing for the beginning. Now for later, there is a big tip but it's gonna spoil an integral part of the gameplay that I'm not sure you know about.

I am probably not aware of it.
Although I remember reading there are multiple worlds, and I think one is a dream world

How many hours before the tip would be helpful?

Obviously, I don't even have a party yet.

Progressed a wee bit further. I got myself a horse, a roaming warrior and just met a mysterious girl that can actually see me.

I am enjoying it, but can't wait till I finally get the job system unlocked. I don't want to "waste" battles on the characters when they don't follow a profession yet.

It was a really nice touch reading about the dilemma of a previous hero in Port Haven.

The job system takes a little while, but you'll get skills before that so it's not really a waste.
First you'll get a full party, soon after you can give them jobs.

Yes, and if you choose to, grinding out jobs is pretty painless stuff once you get Whistle. It's been a while... might have to make good on last year's statement to replay this.

Thanks. In that case, I will forget about jobs till I have my full party. I just gained Milly and visibility this morning.

That's good to hear. I'll probably not go crazy grinding jobs, but I do want the main character to become a "hero".

No idea yet about the others.

After my aversion to monster recruitment before playing V, I can hardly believe I am saying this, but I miss it. In the last dungeon I fought Slime Knights for the first time in VI, and now I really want one in my party. In fact, I want a Slime Knight to be a member of all my DQ parties from now on. They have become by far my favourite monsters.

Now I want the 3DS DQ Monsters.

oh I just realised something: Terry from DQ VI = Terry from Monsterland!
Duh.

Well, I've only just started VI, that's my excuse.

I am facing a dilemma now: To abuse the casino or not?

Actually, I fear I can't help myself.

Hey Aeana,

I'm still playing my way through IV, loving every minute of it. Probably won't be playing V or VI any time soon, they'll just sit on my shelf until I'm done savoring IV.

Thing is, I was never into DQ at all back in the day, until I saw a preview of SFC DQVI in EGM.

RFswWY3.jpg

What intrigued me was that this was the final chapter of the Heavens trilogy.
I had no idea what that meant, no concept whatsoever of the whole Zenithia / Celestial Castle story. That preview is what first got me interested in DQ.
Yet it wouldn't be until another 5-6 years passed that I even tried a DQ game.

I'm happy there's an english translation of the Super Fami VI so I'll play that too when I can.
