Dragon Quest 6 DS |OT| of Tax-Free 2DS Valentine's Slime Curling

Haha! Oh man, that sucks... I must have gotten lucky since I didn't get caught, but I could certainly see how this would get annoying *real* quick.

Aaanndd... I get it at the third attempt.

Still, I don't think I have encountered a random instance of stealth in any game that I felt hasn't detracted from the experience.

Agreed... if it's not part of the core gameplay, it generally feels tacked-on and annoying.

Zero Mission stealth is my favorite section of the game.

Wind Waker has two decent ones as well.

The cave would've been less annoying if they'd let you rotate the dungeon. But, I got through it the first time with no problems.

On the final dungeon, but I feel underpowered. Is it worth it to grind and get 4 Heroes? What's a good level/grind spot to build up some fast levels?

I'm about 20 hours in now and I'm just rolling around the world taking on whatever towns and dungeons I run into.

Is the game genuinely open at this point (the last major acquisition was the
Mermaid's Harp thing
), or are you still gently funnelled around the world in a particular order?

The enemies at my current location seem to be doing quite a bit of damage to me.

It's somewhat open. There are several things that can be done in any order at that point, and many hidden things
under the ocean
.

I've played the game three times since the mid 90's and everytime I play it I find something new there.

Spiegelspire is a great place to grind job levels, especially once you get all-monster attacks like multislice.

At the moment I'm just enjoying turning the world map from grey to green. I'm sure I have left a few threads dangling already.

Only ten days until the European release. I'm probably not going to finish the US version by then, but I'm still glad I imported.

I didn't realise Square Enix was still the publisher for the Euro version. I guess it's their fault for the delay.

Odd. I just noticed the stars bonus missing but it is still a Club Nintendo game and indeed NOE do say Square-Enix is the publisher but I am not aware NOE extended the 3DS 3rd party games get Club Nintendo (if they like) to other formats. I've sent an e-mail to Codestorm to clarify the matter.

Square-Enix Europe don't list the game as coming out either. Plus it has a number (VIII,IV and V did not). I'd say NOE scheduling/NOA did not give them the translation as the fault. The former is "hey there is this Inazuma Eleven RPG you can play...unless you're British p.s. we translated the game into Enlgish anyway but made it so only Portuguese, Nordic and Dutch copies are English *trollface.jpg*"

I'm guessing it's yet another instance where you shouldn't believe everything you read on the NOE site.

On a happier note, I seem to be making a bit of progress with the game. After quite a long stretch in various towns and villages, I found a meaty dungeon to rampage through.

I'm sure this is partly down to user error, but DQ6 has had me more lost and confused than all of the other DQs combined.

Ever since I filled-in 99% of the world map I haven't really had much idea about where I should be going and what I should be doing. I have usually ended-up stumbling into at least one new area or event, but at the moment my experience is pretty fractured and insubstantial.

Yeah I eventually consulted a guide at a certain point in the game, I think it was during the
collection of the Zenithia equipment
(not sure if it is worth spoiler tagin' that) I just wasn't sure where to begin looking. Definitely the most confusing DQ game I've played, I had no idea what was going on in the first hour or so.

Not sure if I should double dip on this with the European release, just for supporting more DQ in Europe (and I guess I prefer all my DS games to have the same boxes).

I had to put this down because the jump in difficulty in the final boss was surprising and a big jump compared to the rest of the game. I was set on Metal King Slime hunting, but then reading on how the true ending also requires beating the boss in 15 or less turns put me off in continuing. And the orange ghosts in the final areas with instant kill attacks suck so bad.

Do you think we'll get DQVII for the DS/ 3DS?

DS is on the way out, so no.

Still too early to tell regarding 3DS. Remakes of mainline games are made to precede the next mainline sequel (or at least that's how it has been in recent years) and it might take a while to decide where DQXI will turn-up. Especially considering how DQX is probably 2012.

Okay, I think I'm back on the straight and narrow at this point.

I'm guessing that I shouldn't have waited until 28 hours into the game to go to
Weaver's Peak after defeating Murdaw
...

Still, I really enjoyed all of the story scenes that came out of that section and I now have a renewed vigour to forge on with the game.

I'm rattling along with this now. Maybe I will be able to finish it before it comes out in Europe... Which is this Friday, people!

I don't really know to be honest.

I just keep muddling through without really playing optimally. At least 5 tough battles have been won with hero the lone survivor getting a desperation victory. I just really haven't been thinking much about party composition or skills.

Unlike DQ9, I'm going through this game for the character chatter rather than the underlying mechanics.

I'm still finding places I've never visited before on the map.

And by 'finding' I mean 'glancing at a FAQ for one hint and seeing the names of locations I've never heard of'.

I've been going back and forth on it, but I'm currently in 'love' mode. And I think I'm getting quite close to the end.

Mine arrived yesterday.
Cover is ugly as sin but the game is great.
Music is fantastic, I stand still just to listen to it.

Dragon Quest and Layton are the only DS games I bother to get my headphones out for.

And maybe the field theme in Spirit Tracks.

Question.

It's about something I need to do later on in the game when the map is nearly full.

An NPC hinted at being able to get the "a carpet" from the style contest, and I assume that this is the flying carpet. Is this true? This mini-game is bringing me severe amounts of frustration, and it's getting really stupid how impossible to became.

Yes. You could look up an FAQ to see the style point requirements for each level if you just want to get through with it.

Okay.

Turns out I already got it and didn't realize it. I kept searching my inventory for it earlier and didn't see it. I also kept thinking it was a plush pillow and not a carpet for some reason.

So glad I don't have to win level 8 for it.

Man, do I love this game. And it's got my favorite soundtracks of the series. But I don't know if I should bother playing through it on the DS when I already love the SNES game's aesthetic so much. How's the music? Sound anything like the Symphonic Suite?

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Just joined the party finally today. Told myself I wouldn't buy this until I finished DQ5 and 9 first(both sitting at ~10 hour mark when I first bought them), but I am fearful of a Radiant Historia/DQ5 situation months from now of missing out on stock.

So I'm only a few hours in and it's been pleasant fun. I just finished all the slime curling courses in the first king's castle town(am I right to assume there is zero rewards for doing so?), and this is pretty much as far as I ever got on an emulator with the game in previous years.

Looking forward to pushing on.

I think some of the music was rearranged to sound more like the Symphonic Suite, but because of DS limitations it sometimes feels off. There are pros and cons.

Grinding... grinding... fun fun fun. Mostly job grinding to get the Hero class for everyone, and my characters are at level 42. What level should I be on to beat
Nokturnus
?

Loving this game so far. I'm only about 5 hours in, but it's grabbed me far more than DQ9 has in that timeframe.

Surprised at how many people looking back have put DQ4 at the lower end of their lists too. Though I still haven't finished this or DQ5, all three DS classics are pretty much equally fantastic I've found.

Maybe my tune will change on DQ6 in hour 30. Seems a lot of people in this thread, enjoy this, but fell off in love as the game progressed.

It didn't dawn on me while I was playing through DQ4, but the lack of party chat removed a lot of the life and soul from the game.

I'm not mad, just disappointed. And quite relieved. I can't imagine playing DQ4 after going through 5 and 6. But then again 9 had even less characterisation and I ended-up enjoying that one too.

I played 4 right after 5, and while I liked the unique presentation and some of the characters were great, I just liked 5 more overall. But you're right... like I've said in the past, ranking Dragon Quest games for me is like ranking Studio Ghibli films. You could rank them, but honestly, even the worst one is going to be better than most other animated movies.

God I hate the casino's in these games. Dropped about 4g just trying out poker, and in all the hands I played I got NOTHING above a pair. Not even good pairs either! I think my highest hand ever dealt were two 5's. Since you only receive any dividends from a two-pair or higher, I got jack shit in the dozen-plus attempts at this stupid game.

After that debacle, I wasted whatever pittance was left on hand doing slots...again middle finger and lost tokens.

Reloaded save before that trainwreck, never touching the casino again in any of these games. What a stupid waste of time, the rewards demand SOOOO many tokens too. I recall spending ridiculous amounts of time in DQ7 and I think 8, cheating the system with quick saves, and I was hating life doing it then.

No more.

Fuck the casino in these games.

The casinos aren't bad as long as you game them. Bet the full amount on the 100 coin slots, reload your save if you lose 20% of your stash, save if you make more then 20% of your stash. If you do this save dance while doing something else (I did it while watching a movie) you get a huge amount of tokens in no time.

As for this game, I hit the "I don't want to play anymore" point not to long ago. It always amazes me that almost every Dragon Quest game except for 4 and 5 have it. There is always just this one section where I don't want to do what is next, or explore for the next thing, or do the next mandantory quest that has nothing to do with the main quest. I always power through, and I always am glad I did... but man does it suck playing a game you don't want to play, even if it is only for an hour or so.

Edit: Oh! And a quick question: Do you actually get anything for slime curling? I spent an unfortunate amount of time doing the entire first board back in the beginning-ish of the game only to get real pissed when I didn't even get a mini medal. Is it worth it to power through them or are they supposed to just be a little fun diversion? If it's the latter, I don't think I will play it again (I'm not a fan).

Yea, I am just gonna forgo the casino rewards. I really hope Horii just drops this stupid diversion in the future of DQ. Does anyone enjoy even 'gaming' this stuff for equipment? Wouldn't we rather earn that content through better means? (Dungeons! Optional bosses!)

And yea, I got nothing from clearing all 5-6 slime curling courses in the first major town. Not bothering again myself either as more pop up later.
