I did this on Tuesday, this fucking game.

I seriously can't put it down though, 56 hours in and I just finished Aeolus Vale past and now just got back to the present.

Doing my first bit of Metal Slime grinding right now (under Tree of Ygg) mainly for XP but would also like to get one for Monster Meadows, are Metals much harder to recruit for the Meadows than the other monsters? Also, Metals are not available as a monster class, correct?

5 shakes of Animal Magnetism or the Shepherd's Crook should still guarantee you any metal monster (assuming you have stars in Monster Masher, but don't have to be in it actively).

So I just started this game after New Years and have been going along slowly. I just finished the Alltrades Abbey quests and now have access to jobs. So I went to Alltrades Abbey in the present and I think I need to beat up some thugs there but they are kicking my ass every time. Am I right that I need to defeat them to proceed?

Also occasionally I send monsters to monster meadows but when I go to check there I can't find any of the monsters I sent, am I missing something?

The bandit's are necessary.

Monster meadows Orme up fully after Nottagen

Man I just switched from Pirate to Monster Masher and boy howdy do I already miss Thin Air. Maribel has Flame Breath from Drakslime, and I've still got Lightning from Sailor, so it's not like I'm totally without all target 0 MP damage, but they still pale in comparison to Thin Air.

Edit: Just looked at the job skills, Ruff just unlocked Paladin and that gets Thin Air at level 2, so disregard this post~

Finally got to dig into my copy of this. Bought it back on release, but played SMT: IVA first and then got sidetracked with FFXV, FFX, and WoFF.

Anyway, I'm about 14 hours in and it's not bad so far. The character models and music are both kind of repetitive though.

I'm really lost now, I just finished the mechanism world and went to present time. Now I don't have any more fragments and don't know what to do.

Is there somewhere I can go in the game for a hint.

Open the menu, and under the last option there should be a thing that says "Next fragment"

Odds are you need to go back to the past and talk to the people in the fortified town (I think it's a little girl that has it?)

How do I select Monster Masher as a class? According to the guidebook in All Trades, I need to have mastered both Thief and Shepherd, my hero character has 8 yellow stars as Thief and Ruff has 8 yellow stars as Shepherd yet it still doesn't seem to be available, do I have to master the two required classes on a single character?

Yes.

Yes, you have to master the two required classes on a single character for all of the advanced classes.

Ok, one more question: I'm going to master Shepherd for my MC since he already has 8 stars on thief, can I master a basic vocation like Shepherd by grinding a bunch of easy battles in a previous area like Regenstein?

Yes. Each area has a level cap where it stops counting for class level ups, though. Most people grind them out in the Tablets system because of this.

Each area has a character level cap where you won't be able to gain job experience. It's usually pretty generous, though Regestein's is like, level 9 so you're probably past that already. Your best best at the moment would likely be the Slime Forest traveler's tablet (which has a level cap of 19) if you wanna go bang out a couple of early game jobs.

Thanks, I'm in the field in Regenstein right now grinding and have fought about 50 battles with my MC as Shepherd but he is still only at one star, am I doing something wrong?

Regenstein's level cap is 9.

Ok thanks, I'll try the Slime Forest tablet.

Edit: Figures that was one tablet I didn't save. >__<

Edit: Doesn't matter, forgot that my MC is at level 22 anyways, so much for easy Shepherd grinding I guess.

Edit: Grinded up to seven stars under Tree of Ygg (threw all my battles with Metals), seemed to cap sometime after level 23, moved on to El Ciclo and got my 8th star after fighting my first field battle there, Monster Masher obtained. Looking forward to eventually unlocking Monster classes which I'm probably most interested in as I really enjoyed recruiting monsters in DQ V.

Is there any good incentive for doing the style contest/Excellence Grading Organization side game? Just arrived there after doing the side story regarding
Carraway
as an adult and the fate of
Lavender
, about how many hours do I have left?

Edit: Ok, prizes are optional protective equipment, unless I'm missing something not sure any of them sound worth however many hours it would take to win, will probably mostly skip this for my first run of the game.

I approached the 100 hour mark and I'm up to the end of Chapter 2 at level 40 (Hero), 38 (Gladiator), 34 (Armentalist), and 34 (Priest). I don't want to fight the boss yet so I'm going to do the win the contests with each character before then. I have a FAQ open for the win requirements at that point. Something tells me that I should try to win the glass slippers at a casino.

My party members are OP because I can clear battles in less than a minute. I agree that the music gets repetitive rather quickly so I've been playing with the volume turned down. Hero and Champion classes have some crazy good abilities. It's been all right but the plot has all kinds of pacing issues. I'm hoping to finish the game before I get DQ8 during Target's B2G1F sale next Sunday.

^^I think you have another 2 Chapters to go so another 60-80 hours depending if you grind and all that jazz.

Nah, that's an exaggeration for the 3ds version. I'd say probably another 30.

I thought the game would be a lot longer factoring in bonus dungeons. But you're right, there's
no more fragments to collect after Chapter 2 aside from optional stuff so that makes sense that it's downhill from there.
Someone emailed RFN and said they put 175 hours into the game and DLC dungeons.

I'm at the world with
the winged people
but the boss is really kicking my ass. I'm near level 30 with my characters and I read earlier posts about lots of hours, I'm at 40h and I thought I would complete this game before getting the Switch. I guess I won't hehe.

I stopped playing at roughly the same place.

Hopefully I will feel motivated to get back into it at some point.

Not enjoying this game at all and it now feels like a chore to finish. Just finished dq viii and coming back to this game after that is just even more painful. Shame really because I had been looking forward to this game for years. I'll still finish but it's a very disappointing experience so far.

Has anyone created a monster location list for the 3DS version? I've finished the story and now want to complete Monster Meadows and the stamps. That's difficult when you don't know what you are missing or where to find it.

The 3DS version has different monster names from the PlayStation version so using those guides isn't easy either.

Edit: Oh, just read about the Big Book of Beasts item. That shows a list of every monster. Just no locations.

I picked this back up after dropping it for DQ8, I'm having a rough time getting back in to it, I can never seem to find where I need to go next - I think the past/present thing is just confusing me because of the long breaks I've taken.

The last thing I did was Greenthumbs Garden, but I don't know how to get back there. Actually this is a problem I've had throughout the game, I seem to keep ending up at points where the place I need to go isn't on the warp list despite having gone there at least once - so I guess places in the past aren't warpable? But how do I get back? I go back to the Shrine and speak to the little dude who you drop tablet shards off to, but still I can't see where I need to warp to to get where I want to go.

Am I just being really stupid and missing something obvious or is it actually a bit confusing?

Beat the game the other day. Are the bonus dungeons worth doing? It seems like I have to grind out finding Haven people to get one of the fragments.

Trying to decide if I should just move onto the next game.

Yeah, you can't warp in the past (since not all towns are in the same time period). But you can see which towns are found in which tablet when you're selecting the tablet. Not sure if Greenthumb Gardens is listed, though.

You can find it
either by going to where Emberdale is (east of the town) or where El Ciclo is (across the bridge), depending on which time you want to get to
.

Thanks. I think I'd worked out about no warping in the past. Between the long breaks I've taken and the back and forth of the storyline I have had a hard time figuring where to go next in this game. 6 and 7 are the only DQ games I haven't finished and I'm determined to give it a damn good try this time!

I have been playing this game since September, and I love it, but I am really starting to feel some fatigue with it. I feel like I am getting close to the end but I also get the impression that this game is going to keep on going long after I think it's close to the end. Can someone give me an idea of how much I have left? I am at
the point after Estard gets sealed off by the almighty. I just got control of Sir Mervyn on his own

Also, does anyone have any tips on using monster classes? I've been doing them with one of my party members for fun, but just sort of picking them randomly based on monsters I like. I think so far I've done berserker, notso macho, and wyvern. Was thinking of doing golem next. Is there an order I'm supposed to train these classes? Should I do all the hearts I find? I did max out Pirate on them as well, which I drop back to sometimes when I hit a tough boss.

Monster classes are there mostly for fun and post-game.

They take a LOT longer to train up than a human job at the same "tier," and they only start bestowing you more useful spells/skills at intermediate and master tier. HOWEVER, you get to keep all those spells/skills permanently, as opposed to advanced human jobs where they're locked to individual jobs.

Unless you're the completionist, then yes, only pick and use the hearts you want.

Is there something in the game that marks the chapters? I saw you guys talking about it so I checked and apparently I am in Chapter 2 and I didn't even realize it.

I just visited King Maximo for the first time and as soon as I spoke with him he automatically exchanged my current total of 58 mini medals for some prizes, I didn't lose my medal tally did I? Just want to make sure I'll still be able to buy the mysterious fragment from him later (which I heard is needed for post game dungeon).

You didn't lose any medals. You don't "spend" medals to buy prizes. Instead, you are awarded them based on the total amount collected, e.g., 45, 50, 58...
Speak to Maximos again to see how many more medals till your next reward.

high five... pretty much the same as me. played it off and on until i finished green garden, but having touched it since BotW came out. i just know ill not know where to go for the next fragment on my own when i return... i think i was missing one for the next vignette. :( i liked the game but its hard to play in spurts.

I'm pushing myself to finally finish this, I just arrived at Tallest Tower with the sizzling stone, about how many hours do I have to go? Also, does unlocking the post game dungeon require a lot of time outside the main quest?

Ok, that's what I thought but just wanted to be sure, thanks.

I'm currently playing the Japanese mobile version - ~24 hours in, finished the past part of the desert episode.
I wanted to ask if anyone knows which download tablets are good for leveling vocations - sadly, I'm around lv 23-24, so way past being able to use slime forest (I wish I knew about that before I hit 20, but oh well).

Edit:
Nvm., it looks like the 3rd tablet in terms of difficulty (40 exp per fight) is good enough to grind jobs.

What's the name of that tablet? One of the early DLC tablets or given by one of the "reformed Monster" NPCs?
